  1. Wasn't sure where to put this but I chose here because it really shouldn't be at all political. So much negative shit here I thought we could use a little positivity. I wanted to brag on a friend's son. I worked with the father for many years. He and his wife were both undocumented from Guatemala and came here 18 years ago when their son was 5. I watched the son grow up and provided the occasional guidance when asked- sometimes harsh and sometimes easy. I was at the son's wedding last weekend (he is now 23). He studied construction management in college, worked for various firms in the summers, graduated and was just hired starting at $60,000 (being bilingual certainly helped). His wife (also Hispanic) also just graduated with a teaching degree and starts in August at $37,000. Had some tequila with the dad and he commented that he did not think this would have been possible in any country but America. I am sure there are other countries this could happen in but probably not for a poor immigrant form Guatemala. 18 years ago his family was destitute and now his son and wife make nearly $100K combined. The tears were plentiful. So no politics but, in this particular case, proud of the people involved tremendously and proud of America too.

  4. My version… Circa 1983 my parents hired their first housekeeper. She was a teenage refugee from El Salvador. The El Salvadoran Army marched through her small hometown one day and conscripted her 15 year old brother into military service on the spot. She was a couple years older. Her parents sent her north for her own safety. She ended up in Houston with nothing but one friend, the clothes on her back, a good attitude, and tireless ability to work. She married a fellow El Salvadoran immigrant, who spent all his working hours cutting grass in oppressive heat and humidity. Hardest working people I know. They both became citizens. Raised three sons. One graduated UT-Austin. Other graduated UH. One passed on college. All are doing great. American Dream achieved in one generation. My mom still has the same housekeeper, and probably will until she’s dead. Bernard

  5. Yeah, and I can tell you a few things about my marriage specifically. #1. We went through 12 long years, most of which my now-husband was not allowed to work because we weren't allowed to get married, so economically, getting married was fucking huge from us. Once he was allowed to work as well, suddenly we could plan for the future, we could put aside money for retirement, we could think about a life with vacations and potentially starting a business, and all the other things that were just not a possibility before the laws were changed. It wasn't all bad before hand though. I was a lower level project manager for a computer company making jack shit when we got together, and him not being able to work forced me to actually apply myself and grow my career, because I got tired of wondering monthly whether we were going to be able to pay all of our bills if we decided to go out for dinner once a month. He also wound up with 2 American degrees, because the only way we could keep him here was to put him in school. And it hasn't been all good since we got married either. We're still paying for those 2 American degrees and will be for awhile. All in all though, the financial stability of not having to worry that missing a paycheck would be a catastrophe that would be difficult to overcome, the emotional stability we have because we can make our own choices about our lives now, the comfort that we take in knowing that if something happened to one of us, the other could make decisions without having to carry around lawyer drafted paperwork everywhere we go, those things have been invaluable. I'm going to pretend like you are being honest in your question and the inflammatory parts are just your immature attempt to appear to be cool.... There are hundreds and hundreds of data points that quantify the marked improvements in quality of life. I have lived with those marked improvements daily since the Windsor decision. In my specific case: 1. Financial security - being allowed to be a 2 income household means we aren't living paycheck to paycheck 2. Emotional security - the very fact we no longer have carry around powers of attorney so that we could go wave them in the face of some hospital administrator if one of us was incapacitated and hospitalized has been bigger than you'd think. Imagine going on vacation and an emergency happens and the hospital wouldn't let you see your loved one because of no defined legal arrangement. That happened routinely before Windsor and Obergefell. That meant that gay couples had to carry paperwork with them every time they left town just in case, or risk not being able to make decisions about their significant other. 3. Mental stability - we no longer have to spend all of our days obsessing over the ins and outs of what could happen because of the whims of elected officials who are feeling some heat from their right flank, and therefore veer off to attack us. The amount of brain power we expended just worrying about that can now be put to better use, and I can tell you it's a loss less taxing to support other groups in the same boat and to work with them to get out of that attack cycle than it is to be the person that is getting attacked directly. I'm sure I could go on and on, but I think I've probably already given you more than you actually cared to read so I'll leave it here for now. To sum up, I will always be thankful for Edie Windsor and Jim Obergefell for their willingness to walk the paths they walked so the rest of us would be able to live a life much closer to free than most of us ever dreamed would be possible. I also won't forget you oldtimes that go back to the Hornfans days, because while most of you were on the Republican side of the fence back then on this issue, you were almost all willing to listen to the arguments and to rethink your conclusions. Y'all being willing to entertain the arguments made me a better person, helped me articulate what I wanted in a clearer way, which paid dividends in my life well beyond this message board. I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for you group of assholes, so thank you too.

  10. Olney has had a hardon for the Astros pretty much since Crane/Lunhow took over. He constantly bitched about how they "were trying to lose" in '12-'13, and how terrible that was for the game. Anytime service-time manipulation is mentioned, he uses the Springer example - never fails. (He never acknowledges that, given the circumstances, it would have been professional negligence to trade full-season 2020 Springer for a few weeks of rookie Springer in 2014 on a team with no chance of contending - never.) Everyone did this. Everyone. Look, I don't mind criticism about Osuna or the douchebag front-office guy that yelled at the reporter, or even the sign-stealing thing (although it is intellectually dishonest for writers to pretend that it was as big a deal as they've made out to be). But when he's been whining about the org every chance he gets for nearly a decade, and then he feels the need to complain about guys who say "fuck you" to the All-Star game - in part due to a situation in which he himself is somewhat complicit in creating - yeah, he just comes off as having an axe to grind. I'd have more respect for him if he just came out and admitted that he doesn't like the org and the people who run it, and by extension, the players in it. Instead he has been passive-aggressive about it for 9 years.

  11. I think it would be cool to stop referring to these people as radicals or the right. There is no right anymore. Here is what this group of people are comprised of. I do no veer off negatively very often anymore, but this group is just spreading pure evil. They are racists, bigots, homophobes, nazi wannabes, turn back the clock to the good old days of the 19th century, thieves, grifters, liars, con artists, fake Christian Evangelicals, money-lovers, morally bankrupt, immigrant-hating, border wall loving, common criminals, Qanon believing, Trump loving death cult members and Methodists.

  17. About a month ago I discovered that I really like wearing a mask. I was in the liquor store, and walked right by a former coworker who is the most miserable cunt I have ever known in my life. It got to the point that she was borderline stalking me. And she just walked right by me. No need for annoying small talk. It was as if I didn’t exist. I have decided that I am wearing a mask for as long as it is even remotely a thing to avoid such interactions.

  18. For many, many people outside of the US, America is still the beacon of hope, where hard work and a little luck can change the fortunes for a family or at very the least put food on the table and violence far away. If you ever need reminding what America is and how important it is that it still be the beacon of light, just talk to a few immigrant parents. They'll tell you exactly why America is the greatest country on earth and why so many risk their lives to bring their families here. Good for this family. America gave them the opportunity, with their determination, they helped keep America great.

We got to speak about his goals, plans, school, grad school, the pandemic, football and more. He could not have been a nicer, smarter and fun guy. I made him him throw me a pass, lol. I was so impressed with him and am now one of his biggest fans. I am so proud that he represents our university.

  24. They never cared about backing the blue, the military, Christianity, or the United States. They are a Republican Cult and that is it full stop. Hypocrisy does not matter, they are for something one day and against it the next if the Cult deems it. They are a terrorist cult radicalized by right wing propaganda. They only use those symbols in the first paragraph for virtue signaling. They don't actually give a fuck about Jesus. Their bravery and bravado was limited to when they had numbers and limited consequences. As soon as the other cops, state police, and eventually the NG showed up, they ran the fuck away. Now they found out what happens when you fail at an insurrection and have a moron at all phases of your leadership. In one circumstance I agree with Trump, I wish the cops weren't so nice to them.

It was real big, so it was like — it was amazing just getting there, because I had heard it was urbanizing and booming. Then seeing it evolve and stuff like that, I was like, ‘OK, yeah, this is the truth. I could go to school here and have fun while doing it.’" On Florida: "I made a Florida visit. Florida, people always tell me that Gainesville is boring. There was nothing boring about Gainesville at all. It was pretty action-packed, and it was fun.” On Alabama: “You go to Bama to be good. I’m good. You actually go to Bama to be great, you go to Bama to be legendary. They’ve showed that. They’ve said in order to be legendary, you have to play best on best, and best on best get better.” On LSU: “LSU is kind of like the same thing. … They’re real business. Really it’s the same thing. There’s not really much different between Alabama and LSU, you know what I mean?” On Texas A&M: “I would say A&M (as the last OV). If another school came out, I would consider it. I’m just really trying to (decide) if I really want to go to A&M to see it or if I don’t.” LMAO. What a ringing endorsement of aggy.

  29. Per my buddy with intimate knowledge of the SEZ lighting project: "You NEED to be there to see it in person." Says it's the coolest thing he's seen in 30 years in the industry. Texas spent 18 months interviewing suppliers to guarantee that lights spec'd would be truly burnt orange. This wasn't limited to "show us a sample", think tours of manufacturing facilities. Original SEZ lighting package bid was about $2.4mm. Is now $3+mm

  30. you were actually the primary reason I decided to come out on this board when I did, you once told me you were very loud about being gay here because at that time you might be the only person someone on these boards would know is gay and that it might make a difference. I watched minds change. It worked. I decided I owed it to my brothers and sisters to do the same. minds change. it works. not all me by any stretch but being out and visible matters. thank you for your example. I mean it.

  32. I fought in Afghanistan, out of my multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, Afghanistan was by far the worst. You've never seen 3rd world until you're patrolling around the mountains and deserts there. It truly will help put how great we have it here into perspective. So long story short, I feel like I have a little bit of skin in the game for helping and keeping tabs on what's going on over there. So when I saw this today it peaked my interest. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jul/07/armed-afghan-women-take-to-streets-in-show-of-defiance-against-taliban?utm_term=OZY&utm_campaign=pdb&utm_content=Thursday_07.08.21&utm_source=Campaigner&utm_medium=email Armed Afghan women take to streets in show of defiance against Taliban Women in north and central regions of country stage demonstrations as militants make sweeping gains nationwide by Emma Graham-Harrison in Kabul So like when Iraq almost fell (but fought back and didn't!) to ISIS, this gives me hope that our lingering around long enough for an entire generation to get used to having some rights and freedom had some positive effect. That the people will not fall back to their old ways. Either way, it'll be really interesting to see how this all pans out over the next year. As it stands now, it looks like we learned our lesson from Iraq and are actually forming plans for immigrating interpreters and those who helped/worked on coalition bases outside of the country, so hopefully we continue down that path, because I feel that the Taliban will be much less forgiving to "collaborators" that ISIS was in Iraq (surprisingly).
