Corona Virus Silver Lining thread to feel less shit-tastic

I've had both the cold and the flu more than once. What makes you think surviving coronavirus makes you immune? It's not chicken pox.

It's a new strain.

You get the cold and flu more than once because there are hundreds of viruses that cause the cold and flu.  Each time you get one, you are immune, at least for a time, to that particular virus.   This COVID-19 virus is one specific virus.  It’s not completely certain since its new, but there is a reasonable chance that once you get it, you will have some form of immunity, at least for a period of time.  It it didn’t offer some immunity to the survivors, the virus infection rate on the population would not slow down, as they always do.
And yes, as pointed out above, it will mutate but usually the mutants are not as potent since you have had exposure to a similar cousin.   This is one working theory on why kids are not being as badly effected...they get infected with other corona viruses regularly at school.

Aren't there suspected to be two strains of COVID-19 now?

Gonna catch up on my reading! Oh right, I'm actually going to just scroll through this website and Twitter while trying to keep two little kids who are home from school at bay.

Predict it.org is a much more enjoyable place to visit these days compared to a few weeks ago. Democrats seem all but certain to retain the house, odds for taking the senate are trending toward 50/50, and the orange retard is struggling to do or say anything productive right now.

i hate the corona virus and I’m worried about my parents getting it, but if the corona virus can hurt trumps chance at re- election, then at least the vast majority of intelligent Americans will get something positive out of this crappy experience.

Yes there is supposedly 2 strains, a ‘L type’ and ‘S type’.  However, the differences are thought to be be very small which means that an immune response to one is likely to be at least partial for the other strain. But yes it will likely mutate, but as it mutates, everything mutates, including its potency.  Overtime, the new versions that cause widespread distribution without killing too many hosts too quickly tend to win out.  That is what happened to the cold. It started out potent and deadly but mutated rapidly and now is just a yearly irritation.

It's really too soon to know for sure and it's not like genetic mutations aren't going to keep on happening.

silver lining:

People will start embracing more technology. Since this has occurred, more people are working from home, more people are using tele-docs instead of going into hospitals, people are embracing curbside pickup, and Universities without much of an Online presence are now offering Online courses.

Our reliance on non-allied trading partners for essential items is certainly an issue that must be corrected - as will be laid bare by COVID-19.

When the medication shortages arise due to our reliance on globalization, there will be pain.

Additionally, we were the country the world depended on for vital equipment and supplies before we farmed all of that off-shore. We would been on top of the trading world with this virus shipping out ventilators. Now - we can't make them for ourselves.

Our national security assessment has downplayed the risk of globalization and that needs to be rectified.

I'll probably lose some weight. At a minimum, eating out is going to go down to near zero over the next couple months. I imagine I'll get more exercise because going for a run is going to be way more appealing to just get out of the house for a bit, as opposed to a workout feeling like a chore before/after work. That is to say nothing of the potential weight loss if I get sick. I had pneumonia a few years ago and lost 10+ pounds.

Damn. Democratic House was in the mid 60's last week. I knew I should have put some down.

Honestly anything below $0.95 is low for a Democratic House and I would have said that before coronavirus. GOP may get themselves thrown out of government with this response.

Unfortunately you're also more likely to be robbed at the gas station by one of the many ctitzens who quickly exhausted their liquidity. Especially if police departments experience sizable no shows due to illness. The key: get your gas early, while folks still have some cash in their pockets.

You fucking panic bought gas during Harvey, didn't you?

Maybe so. But who would you bet will be responsible for this?

I thought so.

And Trump will claim he came up with the mitigation strategy of Flattening the Curve and social distancing - if that pulls us through this mess.

Just remember for future days, his early policy on COVID-19 STEEPENED the curve and he opposed social distancing. That is fact.

Plan on getting a lot of spring cleaning done around the house.

Yep.  Kids already know their room, and home as a whole, is going to be cleaned top to bottom over spring break.

Yeah...I’m thinking my dog is going to love all the walks she’ll get. I imagine I’ll be working from home, and will need some time outside, so dog walks it will be.

Yeah. Mine's about to hit the 10 year mark and hasn't really slowed down much. I think he might end up in the best shape of his life by the time he actually gets to 10.

Damn - that's harsh. Make it fun at least - get them a black light so they can see the nastiness they are cleaning.

It's going to be really good for the environment. Air quality, carbon emissions, pollution, disruption of habitat. Maybe we can give mother Earth a little bit of a break.

Those before/after quarantine satellite pictures of the Hubei region were striking. Cleared the air right up.

Yeah that's what I based my comment off of. Really striking how something that simple can reverse effects so dramatically so quickly. Makes you wonder why we do what we do on a regular basis.

The GOP’s only hope was Bernie Sanders being the nominee. Then they were going to try and nationalize all the races while making the election a referendum of capitalism vs. socialism.

bernie would’ve endangered the house majority, killed any chance of Dems taking the senate, and trump might’ve won 40 states.

biden should be able to give trump a good fight. At least keeping us the house, giving us a punchers chance at the senate, and maybe close to 50-50 odds at the presidency.

sorry Bernie bro’s. Just what I think.

The baby boom from young healthy people with nowhere to go and no sports to watch over the next 30 days will save our social security.

So it is coming as something of a realization that I can actually do my job from home.

Perhaps next summer, I'll just rent an apartment in Paris or Rome or Shanghai for a month.  Let the wife and kids go do their thing during the day and join them in the evenings/weekends.

I did that for 10 days in Kauai a few years ago.  I talked on the phone to clients and my partners and none of them had a clue that I was several time zones away.

The equipment exchange pages on the gun boards like AR15 are starting to have some good deals, and it's only getting started.  If you've coveted a ACOG your entire life, you'll get your best chance to scoop one up in May.
