Our AG regularly spells it "marihuana" in legal documents.  For real.  As in, exactly the way the referred to it in the 1920s and shit.

Well the other option is using that damn Mexican J!

Marihuana was the primary spelling until a concerted effort in the early 20th century to change the spelling to make it seem more "ethnic" and undesirable within God-fearing 'Murican culture.

Surely it's a voter-base play from Abbott - maybe a lobbying cash-infusion on top of that. I wouldn't think this by itself would be enough to get a dem elected but a lot of conservatives (or anyone that would vote for Abbott) under 30 or 35 or whatever the number is probably aren't down with that proposed ban.

The lobbying cash-infusion is almost certainly the reason this bill was presented in the first place, just from the alcohol side.

Which is so dumb. Even if alcohol sales took any kind of hit from weed legalization it would be so small it would be unnoticable... because guess what, drinkers gonna drink and smokers gonna smoke regardless of the law.

I don't think that's remotely true. Gen Z is drinking a lot less than everyone else did, for starters.

Sure, and THC manufacturers probably scraped some cash together to fight back.

Maybe, but the alcohol lobby is larger and richer.

The alcohol lobby believes in states with legal use, sales have been impacted significantly, especially among those under 35. The amount they spent in lobbying is nothing compared to a 15-20% decrease in sales.

This must be a joke. You have people like Slorch who hate this ban and hate the 10 commandments thing who will be there on early voting day 1 to vote for Abbott and Patrick.

I don't know how many voters it applies to but people are weird and vote based on stupid shit.

Well if the stats are there then I guess they're there. That's surprising to me. I could see it taking a tiny hit, but not anywhere close to 15-20%.

Don't worry, Texas alcohol lobby. I'll do my part.

Every time I go to a concert in Denver, I'm blown away by the fact that there are usually no lines at the beer stations.

“It sort of puzzles me why my friend Governor Abbott would at the last minute—22 minutes after 11—decide to veto this bill,” Patrick said. “One can only come to this conclusion, which surprises me. The Governor of the state of Texas wants to legalize recreational marijuana in Texas. That’s the headline folks.”

“What kind of culture do we want? We want everybody high? I mean, everyone will tell you in [Colorado, California and Washington], work product has gone down. Everywhere you go it smells like grass. It’s awful,” Patrick said. “I don’t want that for Texas. You know, gaming and sports betting and that—look, that’s a person’s choice… but this is life and death. This is life and death. This destroys lives. This reaches a whole other level.”

Literally the dumbest question I've ever heard and I taught at SWT for 25 years...

This place is honestly so perfect that I sometimes feel like I've somehow been cast as the main character in a remake of The Truman Show.

Saw "Reefer Madness" at the Varsity Theatre when I was 14 or 15. It was a twin bill with "The Punk Rock Movie".

Party on.

The old Fine Arts Theater on the square in Denton used to always do a midnight show on Saturdays.  It was usually Reefer Madness and then Rocky Horror or Song Remains The Same.

I may have snuck out of the house several times in junior high to attend.

TIL that they made a remake 20 years ago:
