So, the twitters will be quite til morning. We’ve hit up real estate, Tex-mex, scotch and how old Austin is dead and it’s corpse is being raped.

Id like to propose we start talking about TX beers now.

I’ve gotta say, Ranger Creek has really grown on me. Free Tale is also pretty solid as right now I’m drinking a SA Pale Ale.

That's awesome. You may have me beat. I tried the Turbo T Man once. It was just too tricked up and I immediately switched back.

I’m a weird guy, but my go to was (everyone hide your eyes) brisket and sliced chicken breast.  If Gary or Tom are on this site, I have now doxed myself.

From an old Athletic article on Pantoni:

Five of Pantoni’s former recruiting assistants are now directors of player personnel at FBS programs. That includes Eron Hodges, recently appointed to head up Jeff Brohm’s recruiting efforts at Purdue, which hosts Ohio State on Saturday night. Giglio at South Florida, Derek Chang at Texas, Adam Caltury at Rutgers and Mark Diethorn at Virginia Tech are all part of Pantoni’s tree.

Adam Caltury is now at Pitt

I had no idea Caltury was now at Pitt. I wasn't too impressed with him at Rutgers, but it was hard for anyone to do well with Ash running the program.

Depends on what I'm jonesing for, but off the top of my head on the quick -------->>>

Puffy Tacos - Teka Molino and Taco House (both on San Pedro)

Breakfast Tacos (especially Carne Guisada) - Taco Riendo (also on San Pedro)

Sit down dinner - Los Barrios (although I haven't been in years and I'm not even sure they're still open)

Plain old nasty hangover Chingadero late night pre hangover grease extravaganza - Blanco Cafe (The one near Chris Madrid's, not any of the others)

Sit down dinner where you can take a date without her getting stabbed - La Paloma Blanca on Broadway (again, haven't been in awhile, so I can only assume it still kicks ass, but who knows?)

Best drive thru Tex Mex on the FAST - Used to be Las Palapas hands down, but now it's Taco Palenque (chain out of Laredo, I believe)  Get the beef Piratas.  Trust me.

Taco Palenque... a man of culture. Their barbacoa is also really good, if you haven’t tried it yet.

Their fajitas are really fucking good.  The rest of the menu may be ass.

It’s funny- I was just having this discussion about Lupe’s today when we decided on gringo’s over Lupe at work today. Said their fajitas are love EM or don’t like them. Depends upon how you feel about lime. I don’t like lime and they use a lot of it on a lot of different dishes so I’m pretty much out on the place, but I think it’s just a matter of taste. They are doing something a little different than traditional Tex Mex.

Last night, I got home from work at a normal hour and spent hours reading every missed page of this thread to catch up.

Just got home from work tonight, seeing fajita discussion, I’m going to assume I haven’t missed anything and just start from here.

I always enjoyed the (I guess Vietnamese) eggroll stands setup on the curb by then-RLM (now back to PMA), on The Drag by the Co-Op, and also on 24th sometimes, too, starting in the late 80s. I suppose The University ran them off eventually because they disappeared after a few years. The eggrolls may have been radioactive, but they tasted damn good to me. LULZ

Or, wait. Is that some sort of joke?

If so, still lame.

Curios on why Campbell wouldn't be an option but Mullen would?

I think Nahlin's thought was that we wouldn't get down to Campbell's spot on the list. Perhaps they know a guy will take the offer? Idk. I don't think Campbell is off the table though, although Michigan potentially being open cuts whatever the previous odds were of landing him by half

Ok luck was drunk speak but at the same time is he a proven upgrade that we need to spend money buying out Herman and an entire staff for? No one wants Herman gone more than me but Franklin doesn’t move the needle in the a absolute slightest especially compared to the other cristobals/campbells/fickells of the world. He’s just not it

Keeping Herman would lead to more transfers from the current roster and two transition classes in a row; we'd be back to a post Strong level of talent on the roster. Franklin would bring the optimism that every new coach brings, along with a handful of Penn State level recruits, and maybe a top five class in 2022. Given that he has big school experience, he probably now knows that you have to immediately hire a major league staff rather than bring your AAA buddies along.

I wouldn't love the hire, but I don't love any of Franklin, Campbell, Sarkisian, Cristobal, or Fickell. But I try to see the avenues to success that each suggests, along with where they'll likely fail.

He's still a relatively young head coach who has impressive success at probably one of three or so worst P5 jobs, and who has experience at a top fifteen program. It's worth the roll of the dice rather than running it back with Herman and hoping Herman has a Dabo-like turnaround, I think.

Not sure what to make of this. He has quoted Reuters before. Maybe reference to Rutgers. Greg Schiano as DC?

It's funny you mention that, because one thing I've noticed in a few flights this week (that otherwise would have had flight itineraries of interest) is that there are quite a few with stops in Teterboro, NJ airport before heading back down south. One that comes to mind hit Austin, Peachtree, Columbus OH and Teterboro, IIRC. There were one or two others as well.

To this point I've just been dismissing and closing the tabs for those flights thinking, "New Jersey doesn't have shit to do with this," but maybe you're on to something. Maybe we're poaching a Rutgers coach, and it's not like they have anything to play for / they could give a definitive answer.

NSIAP, but these are the two Pittsburgh Panther staffers who I identified as having potential ties (one strong, other tenuous):

  • Adam Caltury, Director of Recruiting - Served as a recruiting assistant under Meyer at tOSU; his current role at Pitt is the same one Mark Pantoni had at tOSU while Meyer was there (recruiting program coordinator)
  • Michael Stacchiotti, Strength & Conditioning Coach - no ties to tOSU or any of Meyer's former HC stops, but Stacchiotti is an Ohio native (and a pretty well-respective S&C coach based on some quick digging); same role as Marotti, equally strong Italian name; was on Fickell's inagural staff at Cincy

Going to give myself a pat on the back for calling Caltury on Monday.

In that role, he worked closely with head coach Urban Meyer on game-planning, scheme development, opponent scouting and personnel for a team that won the Big Ten Championship Game and finished No. 5 in the AP Poll. Ohio State ended the year ninth nationally in punting (led the Big Ten), 10th in kickoff coverage (third in the Big Ten) and 17th for kickoff return (second in the Big Ten). The Buckeyes produced All-Big Ten performers at three special teams positions as well, kicker, punter and kickoff return specialist.

Didn't overlap with Urban at either stop, but think it's a good of a prediction as any given there don't appear to be any direct ties to Urban on their staff. A surprising number of Baylor/TX and NFL folks though given the location.

Breathed made a single-frame cartoon about the egg roll wars (circa 1980). The Non La  wearing owners were firing AKs and M-16s at each other from behind their carts. Funny shit you wouldn’t see in today’s trigger-sensitive world.
