Exactly.  And to say it's a 3% mortality rate is wrong as well, yet we've about collapsed the economy and have everyone in a panic.

But the data suggests it will be more flu like levels. Not everyone gets tested for the flu, so they estimate how many get it. This thing has been here for weeks, not days. And thousands are estimated to have already had it and recovered.

U better wake up, a shipment is en route to Bastrop

You'd think the declaration of a national fucking emergency would be taken a bit more seriously.

Nation of idiots that think it can’t happen to them.

We’ve had too many that stopped short of real bad, with media doing its thing for them all. Crying wolf. Especially over Ebola.  Great coverage because of scary symptoms and outcomes, but it wrecks people before they can infect others.

Another anecdote... lifelong friend is a surgeon in the Dallas burbs (south). He ‘knows’ the cases are extremely more widespread and numerous than official current stats. Said cdc hosed his hospital on the testing. As of this afternoon they’d only done ten tests and feel sure one is positive and a couple other probables. They sent their tests to temple as opposed to Dallas due to Dallas backlog but still will take another day for results. He’s expecting his ortho surgery practice to be frozen soon for resource preservation and eventually he’ll be called in as a backup/all hands on deck. They’re getting protocols put in place for patient visitation and processing/ waiting areas.

this is good.  the entire medical community gearing up now is our best hope of keeping curve below capacity because social distancing is apparently optional for everyone below 40 or over 70.

I spoke to my 79 year old mom in FL tonight.  She went to a party but she said she is being careful as there were only about 40 people in attendance.  I yelled at her that she needs to be more careful and she said she had to go as she committed to this a while ago.  I don’t know if it’s a case of old people are set in their ways but I can’t tell you how pissed I am at her.  I mean how is anybody over 60 not barricading themselves in their houses right now.

I had the talk with my family a little while ago about "when does this go back to normal."

 it doesn't.

Peak for this episode is likely to be in May, based on what I've heard from someone whose epidemiological knowledge I trust, but whether that is overly pessimistic, or hopelessly optimistic, it doesn't really matter. The main takeaway is that pandemics are far more likely than we have allowed ourselves to believe over the last century, and that naivete is now over. If it's not Covid-19, it will be something else.

"Normal" won't mean the same thing when this is over.

Long time lurker on my old account. Email got infected with coronavirus so I made a new one with Daddario’s tits.

damn ztejas, what are you the surly contingency plan?  people make new accounts for various non-CV related reasons:

1.)  not to get doxxed

2.)  because there are a bunch (or maybe just one) trigger happy ban-admin that make hornsfans look like a free world.  it's a tragic irony, where shag/surly started out as an outcast of HF fans to gather (thank you sincerely, BL), and is now not so different.  perhaps this is due to more extremists views since then.

I keep wondering why this is so much different than swine flu just 10 years ago which infected 60M and 12K died.

fuck swine flu.  the normal flu kills tens of thousands of americans every year.  including last year’s flu season that killed an estimated 61,000 people here on american soil.  no real social media buzz.

Social media, or any media, isn’t causing the shutdown of sports from professional down to youth, or elimination of any get togethers of size, or suspension of worship services.  Facts and trends are.

adding:  I don’t understand why people are hoarding groceries based on social media, but won’t embrace social distancing being pushed by the same social media.

yeah covid isn’t killing anywhere near 2%.  it seems to be killing 2% of people that received a positive test result after being tested.

Did you get tested for swine flu? I didn’t. That’s one thing consistent among the outbreaks. We only test those who meet certain criteria. The mortality rate is based on those tests. This one seems higher at the minute based on the similar testing criteria.

of course. But we are seeing what’s happening globally in real time. If not for it, we don’t know much about Wuhan

And the testing for anything else before wasn’t different?  Flu, swine flu ect?  Therefore that’s the difference and it also spreads easier.

Lockdown sucks. It really sucks. It can't last more than a month to six weeks I don't think.

Pornhub is doing their part.   I think video game sales will start climbing.

And I’m thinking if this drags on, you’ll see more stuff like Disney dropping Frozen II three months early on Disney+.   Hell, we may get some movies that are being pulled from their theatrical release dates.

Meanwhile I’m nerding out on Star Trek YouTube videos and seeing fucking travel ads for Oklahoma.

5,833 people have died so far, and it’s only starting to hit Europe and US. (Wait till Africa and South America)

here’s the rub - do you remember over 80 million people being quarantined for the swine flu? That was just China for this. Who knows how many people will die from this? Just remember whatever the number end us being, that is with the world shutting down to stop the spread.

I know the “it’s just a flu” talking points after this is over will be only 50K died or whatever, but that will be because every country shut down for a month (or more). Businesses lost billions, economies trillions, thousands will have been laid off, people will lose their homes, etc,

the 60M and 12K was US only.  50K would be great WW.  Swine flu killed 200K+
