And a stack of Highlights magazines.  Oh, what trouble will that Goofus get into THIS time?

Highlights and Reader's Digest.

Yeah, you know what's playing in the background...

Follow up question.  I'm just going to assume I remember that Matt's, like many Tex Mex places, has a burger and fries on the menu.  In my experience, such Tex-Mex restaurant burgers tend to kick a little ass.  I'm sure one of my kids probably ordered one in their younger years, but long shot: Anyone who's had one, Does a burger from Matt's hit pretty good?

Haven’t had it. But I long said that the burger and fries at Joe’s Bakery was secretly the best in town. It didn’t make the post-Covid menu revamp.
That’s actually a rule for Mexican restaurants all over Texas. I remember eating at places in the valley, Sonora, all over….and the little Mexican cafe in town almost always had a fantastic burger. Because Mexicans can fucking cook.

Ah, Joe's Restaurant.  I feel I still owe you lunch and a beer.

This is my own creation for lunch today: Goes Without Saying It’s Gringo Cheeseburger Nachos

>Repurposed Crumbled Turkey Burger
>Shredded Mexican Cheese
>Sharp Cheddar Cheese Slice (Pieced by hand)
>Cantina Laredo Chips or some shit
>Mi Tienda Salsa

Matt’s doesn’t look so bad does it?

Just checked my two standard carnicerias for outside skirt. Nope.
But, did see this, which reminds me that there are still things in this world that are good and right. Go spend your $5-6 each for a breakfast taco at all your hipster places. Or go to La Finca.

My father-in-law (RIP), born and raised in San Antonio, got burgers at Tex-Mex joints all the time.  Matt's was one of his favorites.

Matt's is....fine.

Molina's is....fine [interesting note: it was the first restaurant I ever went to.  Mom took me as a 6 week old baby]

Los Tios is....fine (although that puffy queso thing is awesome).

Tex-mex is one of those foods that can be done "fine" pretty easily, and plenty of places pull it off.   Shit, my wife loves La Mancha.   Which is....fine.

And also it hurts them that they’re all located in Austin with a shitty Tex mex scene.

I'm not sure I've ever had their burger. But everything off of their grill is great. As are the Matt Jr. fries.

El Arroyo had a burger that I really fucked with back in the day.

We went to Curra's Hyde Park after the game yesterday.  Maybe they were just off, but it was not great.  Food was a couple of notches down from the last time I went.  I feel bad because I've been recommending it a lot lately.  FAFO I suppose.

Only thing I know about Curra's is the avocado margarita.  They serve food?

They have a damn good cochinita pibil. At least they used to at the old Burnet Road location I used to frequent.

Curra's interior stuff is pretty good.

And Tex-Mex places have fantastic gringo burgers as a general rule.

Might have just been an off night.

I recall someone on Surly posited that they cook their burgers on the same flattop used for fajitas.

My go-to there has always been the migas, double rice and extra tortillas.  It’s carbohydrate nuclear bomb, though, have to run a marathon before.

Yeah, we used to eat breakfast quite often at the OG Curra's when we lived on Nickerson St in Travis Heights.  Their Oaxacan coffee is the tits.

I’ve had it.  Truth is that I was really drunk. I don’t remember it being bad, but don’t remember it being great. I haven’t ordered it since so I guess there is a reason.
Back when I was in college they used to serve fried chicken and it was excellent.

Rip Mother’s.

That place was terrible and its sole attribute was “at least it’s better than Casa de Luz”.

Y Mas cheeseburger is well worth the visit.  I've told many it's the best thing on their menu.

I ate there a lot, and one of my friends was their main baker for years.  I thought the food was great.  Well, great for vegetarian.

I want to be triggered by this but am going to have to make a run to see what’s what’s here. This could be a moment.
