Abbott being Abbott

I assume it’s not difficult to call Texas your home for income tax purposes. It’s not like Texas verifies since they don’t care. The difficulty is that you can’t have another state or your employer believe that you reside in an income tax state.

Rent a low cost physical address in Texas, and you’re set.

if you’re someone that is politically active, you effectively lose the ability to vote elsewhere unless you want to risk losing your tax benefits.

You don’t need to rent property. I know a couple of full time travelers and they both use Texas Home Base for $220/year. https://www.texashomebase.com/

It’s in Wichita Falls so they are registered to vote there.

If you’re already a Texan, it’s no hassle but non residents have to do a few things to establish residency.

From their FAQ:

If you intend to become a Texas resident, you must have your vehicle inspected and registered in the county of residence, get a Texas driver’s license, and get Texas vehicle insurance. You can also register to vote in Texas, employ a Texas attorney, join a local library, or establish a Texas bank account. These actions show intent to make Texas your “domicile” (see below). Many clients are able to use a Texas Home Base address as their “domicile” (see below) to make the aforementioned efforts to establish residency in Texas.

Where are these ads showing?

I've seen Abbott's weird ad several times where he is in the middle of cop cars with their lights flashing at night... but nothing from Beto or Coulda Been Worse.

So does this only work for nomads?  Or is this like a front for people that move to states that have state income taxes?

Austin Fox affiliate (Fox 7) has both Abbott and Beto/Coulda Been Worse ads during the morning news.

Although Zach Shields is pretty solid.

Okay, that's the third time I've seen edgelord on this site this week---one time directed at me (NTTAWT).  What the fuck does that word mean?

Someone, especially posting on the internet, who uses shocking and nihilistic speech and opinions that they themselves may or may not actually believe to gain attention and come across as a more dangerous and unique person. Most Edgelords are teenagers trying to seem overly cool and/or over-casually apathetic.

totally not what pornhub said that word meant, but I'll allow it.

I've been called a lot of things but a nihilist is not one.

also-THECB indicated that Gov. Abbott intends to go after CRT/wokeness/free speech in higher ed way, way harder next session.  Like atomic-level.  I thought, "If he wins re-election, he's fine for 2023 session...no reason to spurn the very people who just bankrolled his re-election by dragging their alma maters through the mud.  Maybe 2025 to set up something down the road but that makes no sense.  He's already got his wedge issues with abortion, the border, and guns."  But nope, he's going full fucking scorched earth.  A lot of his usual UT allies are fucking tired of his shit.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has reportedly sent two buses of migrants to Kamala Harris' residence at the Naval Observatory in Washington D.C., delivering between 75 and 100 people outside the vice president's official mansion.

According to a breaking news report by Fox News, the migrants originally come from Venezuela, Uruguay, Colombia and Mexico. They were picked up at Eagle Pass in Texas, and sent to Washington on the Republican governor's orders.

Hot Wheels only talks about solutions searching for problems.  I wish Texans would hold him accountable for not addressing real issues.
His whole role as Gov is just performance art directed at appealing to the worst in people.
There is a lot I like about Texas but for the first time, I am really looking forward to living somewhere else.

I'm not sure where I saw it -- maybe on this thread -- but the migrants who were sent to Martha's Vineyard ended up being treated quite well, with housing, food and medical care provided by the locals.

I mean, it's not like it will stick with Abbott and his band of merry jackasses, but it will stick with the people who were actually treated like human beings in need.

That's the thing of it.  He sends a plane load to Martha's Vineyard.  Those people will have good-paying jobs up there in less than a week.  They'll love it.  And every last one will appear for their immigration hearings.

Why the taxpayers of the State of Texas should pay for that, however, is a mystery.

One thing, however, is that they LIKE it.  The most recent UT poll of the state of Texas races (Abbott 45-40) was that voters approve of it, 52-35.

Texas fucking sucks because it's full of Texans.

I'm probably idiosyncratic, but I approve of it for the reasons mentioned above.  I don't like the expenditure, but I love it for the immigrants.

But that doesn't mean I'd ever dream of voting for Greg Abbott.

They didn't even tell them where they were going.  And they got sent to an island with few social services, that essentially closes down in September once the tourist season is over. There are just about no jobs there over the winter.  So the people of Massachusetts now will have to pay for their relocation.  It's sociopathic.  But I guess they're owning the libs, so there's that.

i am so glad to read/see that the locals are embracing these folks and helping them in whatever way they can in the short term.  And eventually, they will need to be relocated yet again...but on the bright side...a handful of them plus some townies...you know there's a fucking fantastic sit-com script in here somewhere.

But jokes aside, the media and the Democrats need to be just as loud, if not louder, about the inevitable relocation of these folks yet again as they are/were about the initial disruption to the Vineyard in the first place.  These people should not be used as political props but here we fucking are.  Show them in the cold November rains right before Election Day with no jobs, no way to feed their families, no public health clinics, nothing but the good natured folks of Masschusetts who will remind you how this all  happened in the first place.

Seriously, I think of twisted worst-case scenarios for my fucking day-job.  But DeSantis/Hispanics/Private Plane/Martha's Vineyard.  Never in 1000 years.................

It's like Texans, especially on the border have been dealing with it for years. Why should our border czar not see the work she's not doing? What, she only gone to El Paso once? Also, you want to be sanctuary city/state so bad, why don't you deal with the trickling of immigrants? What a bunch of NIMBYs. Take some responsibility for what you're policies bring in. This isn't cruel, it is relieving the small border town that you don't have the infrastructure to deal with year after year.

The most annoying thing is that the Republican base is so fucking stupid and racist that they read "migrants" as meaning illegals, when in fact our taxpayer money is being used to ship people who are 100% legally here across the country, who could have been working in the workforce here in Texas instead, just as a political stunt.

Can you be more specific about what we should take responsibility for? Does your renewed posting in CR have anything to do with the white angst over no longer being the majority in Texas? Please edumacate us on how to take some responsibility for what our are (lol) policies bringing in.

Yep, you do the math on the $1300 bus tickets plus lost GDP in the form of skilled labor, plus lost sales tax revenue nevermind what else they might do while here in a year (fuel taxes, property tax pass-thrus on rent, lottery tickets, to parking tickets)......all tens of millions of dollars (probably more) down the fucking drain as a stunt to send disperse kids and their parents to all corners of our country for no fucking reason except to be mean.

Since offloading "problems" onto other states is cool with @workswithseed, we've got thousands of black men here in California convicted of carrying firearms. In many GOP states, such acts would not be criminal.

California has long sought to reduce access to guns, but the GOP continues to block those efforts.

I propose putting all felons convicted of gun possession crimes onto busses and sending them to Texas because I have a malfunctioning brain like @workswithseed

Somehow, the "border problem" in Texas, which is nothing new, is the fault of Democrats.

Current streaks in Texas elected officials as a function of party affiliation:

Governor -- Republican since 1995

Lt. Governor -- Republican since 1999

Attorney General -- Republican since 1999

State Senate -- Republican since 1997

State House -- Republican since 2003

. . . and yet somehow it's the Democrats' fault that Texas has a "border problem".

I mean, to be fair it is a Federal border. That's why I've been a bit surprised Biden hasn't told Abbott and Operation Lone Star to cool it.

That said, I do think the border is an issue and needs to be addressed. It's one area where I think Biden is lacking and Republicans have a legit gripe.

All of that explained... fuck the entire demonization of people crossing the border and fuck using them as political props.

To what extent though? It's not like there's nothing going on down there, action-wise. Hell on my way back from the ranch last week, I got stopped twice by USBP (feds) on Pinto Canyon Road because they "hadn't seen my car before and this is a highly trafficked area". Talked dove and hiking snacks for a few mins while his partners ran my stuff and looked through all my windows, and away I went.

If we want fewer migrants coming into our country, perhaps we should try to make other parts of the world less shitty? That was Perry's big idea in the early aughts before the GOP went full racist and fascist. And the US has dirty hands when it comes to Central American governance

Abbott literally siphoned off $500M of funds from Health & Human Services, DPS, etc. to prop up "Operation Lone Star", which deploys the Texas National Guard to 53 counties.  Don't tell me the Republicans can't do anything.

I just want to say, if the patrolling officers know the area well enough to know who's a regular and who isn't, how much of a benefit would additional money or agents really provide? Seems like they are doing the best job possible. Fact is, the migrants just want it more.

It's always fun to update Jesus's parables and apply them to the right:

In reply Jesus said: "A man was going from Guatamala, fleeing a drug cartel that wanted to kill him and seize his daughters as sex slaves, when he found himself on the brink of starvation, having crossed a desert, a river, and another desert with limited supplies and no money. He went to a prosperity gospel preacher for help, but they had just had the carpets cleaned so the preacher refused him shelter. He went to the Christian governor for help, but the governor shipped him to Martha's Vineyard with no support or direction so he could own the libs. But a pinko, commie libtard saw him and took pity on him. He clothed him, and fed him, and sheltered him. He brought him to an immigration lawyer and said 'Look after him. When I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.'

“Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell victim to drug cartels and gangs?”

The expert in the law replied, “The bleeding heart, pinko commie libtard who had mercy on him.”

Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

Well, THAT Jesus was a commie liberal pinko.

Not like the REAL Christ, Donald J. Trump.

ADVANTAGE: DONALD J. TRUMP CHRIST, LIBTARD!
