Texas -- a failed state

Might I suggest Northwest Arkansas.  (Fuck the rest of Arkansas.)

Tax rate is slightly higher but when you factor in what you'd pay for a house in Texas and the appropriate property tax, it's not that much higher.  It makes all of the Best Places to Live for a reason, especially if you're into outdoorsy stuff.

How is that any different? The problem is state government. Arkansas also has shitty state government. NWA has a few decent pockets, but Texas has many more. I found a nice pocket in Tulsa and associate with people I like despite hating my state government and the people we send to congress. I seriously considered leaving but just bought a house so I'm pretty much committed here for the long run. I don't expect state politics to ever change but I'm happy with the people I hang out with regularly and my daughter's public school is doing just fine for her.

I'd like to think this latest failure by the Texas government will put to rest these silly notions of secession considering we're having no issue taking the hand the Federal government is extending. But who am I kidding, the Biden Administration will do something next week that will get these fucktards all redassed.

And regular point beer in grocery stores and gas stations finally. We also have several great craft breweries and a market that isn't saturated as it seems in the big cities in Texas. The only thing we don't have that Texas does is pro sports and more Fortune 500 jobs. Granted, the latter is pretty important, and if I leave, it will be because or economy doesn't improve. Your governor sucks, but ours is worse, not sure that's a talking point though. Keep in mind that I'm a Native Texan and proud of it, but I prefer my current location to Dallas or Houston.

Straw men and moving goal posts; nothing you said addresses the fact that Texas is trending in the “right” direction as a purple or blue state in the near to medium term, versus the blue stall or republican choking out the blue growth, as you said. My whole point was giving up now is stupid because you are so close to getting what you allegedly want, which is more voice or power or representation as the state goes purple. Leave if you want, but doing so (and advocating likeminded others to do so), actually hurts the progress and makes it harder on the very folks like you who are fighting the good fight.
or just admit you are being emotional and venting and it’s self/help and therapy for you, and you’ll be ready to buckle down in a few days and resume the good work. It’s better than lying.

Naaah. Texas had cultivated stupidity and cruelty very well. It has yielded a bumper crop and continues to do so. Never bet against something so well and continuously cultivated.

You and I both know that a blue Texas is a far off dream, and you have not addressed the fact that your party has openly and shamelessly stated that they will take every measure to suppress the vote to remain in power. I’m not guessing - they TOLD us that. You ignore it. I don’t. That’s because you’re a gaslighting lying piece of shit.

It will only get worse, and I don’t want to be around for that. I’ve fought an uphill battle against this shit for decades. The idiots have won. This frozen hellscape is what they wanted, it’s their dream come true. And there are a lot more outcomes like this coming in the coming years. This is the state functioning as desired and designed. Let them have their paradise.

As for me, I’ll just find someplace where, I dunno, there’s a fraction of an attitude and culture that believes that maybe, we live in a society that has other people in it. I know that makes me an evil socialist who drinks baby blood with AOC, but I’m well past giving a shit what evil gaslighters like you believe.

And Brisket, at the end of the day I think you know I’m right and you are wrong about the short and mid-term prospects and extrapolations of Texas politically (heck I think the minority population and demographic growth alone could change the political landscape at some point). If I was one of your middle aged fart sniffing quasi-conservative-turned-more-liberal friends it would be easier for you to accept, because all you see of me is a Q-American-Flag flying crazy person despite the only thing remotely similar being I voted for Trump.

And in truth my tone could have been softer and I’m kinda being a jerk to you, but it’s because I can’t stand to see a grown man sniveling and ugly-crying.

Also it’s weird that some of your friends are trying to stage some sort of crowdsourced ban by negging me. I could make the argument your OP is more of a troll job than anything I’ve ever said or done, I just exist here as someone who sits diametrically opposed to your way of thinking. I think some of you don’t know what gaslighting even means and if it weren’t for hot Twitter posts, you’d not know how to use it in a sentence. But there ya go ^^^

a blue Texas is not a far off dream. I believe it’s a forgone conclusion and inevitably at this point. I think a lot of folks agree. I think you are wrong here.

The only question is if you think a Blue Texas is an ideal state or “the dismal tide”, which isn’t what we are discussing here today.

True or false: your party has openly stated that it needs to reduce voter turnout to win, and repub legislators have proposed actual measures to do so, and control both houses of the lege and the governors mansion so they can pass whatever they want.

Answer that truthfully. Then you can participate in this conversation again.

Till then, you are gaslighting, so fuck off.

Fair enough. Because I’m earnestly conversing with you, I’ll accept the challenge. I googled the phrase “texas gop openly says it needs to limit voter turnout to win” and the top result was how higher turn out helped GOP? Link me something that proves your point, for once in your life, and let me read it and if you are right then I’ll concede. Once again, you aren’t being honest. You said the Texas GOP in an effort to stop the Purpling and Blue wave of Texas and then posted Google results of the USA national election and Florida?

It would honestly be a shock and a concern if what you say is true and Texas GOP has openly stated what you said. I’d hate to admit you are right but I can’t find anything like that. You keep saying these exclamatory and levying very serious accusations, but never give direct evidence. You try to change the conversation. Gaslighting.

Why don’t you just refer back to Paxton’s numerous efforts to limit voting [checks notes] just a few months ago. Again, openly stated and coordinated goals by the Texas gop to limit voting.

For fucks sake, you’re not even GOOD at gaslighting. You’re just a run of the mill disingenuous piece of shit.

If Texas were to go blue and it got worse instead of much better, how would you handle that? Would you say everything will be fine by predicting the future or would you double down on your doom and gloom stance that you always seem to have?

I'll throw in my answer to that one.. if Texas went blue and things got worse, it'd be yet another reminder that to enjoy good governance, the people we elect must get off their asses do their jobs well, and we must replace them when they don't.

Being "right" is a lot less important than being "capable." Of course, everyone who understands that has left the GOP by now.

Record Turnout Helped Texas Republicans, So Why Are They Still Pushing to Make It Harder to Vote?

GOP state legislators have proposed bills that could make it more difficult to cast a ballot in 2022. Some might backfire on the party

I will say my consideration of leaving Texas is not based on the politicians.  Yeah the Texas Republicans that run this state are vile and awful but they are not who I interact with on a daily basis.  My problem is the people living here.  I am in an affluent suburb north of Dallas.  I am honestly sick of being around people that watch Fox News all day long and are anti science and against overall progress and more concerned with religious stuff.  I can’t tell you how many people I know near me that are blaming this winter weather fiasco on renewable energy.  I think I want to be around let’s say more intelligent people.  This includes for my 15 year old sons sake also.  He is surrounded by a bunch of dumb asses and that is probably not the best environment to raise a child in.  It’s the little things like seeing my district spend 10 million dollars on a middle school football field as opposed to improving the actual education of the children just pisses me off and I am all for school athletics but some peoples priorities are out of whack.  I blame lack of intelligence for that.

My reason for leaving wasn't politics.  However, it is the reason for me to not come back.

They did, but I was thinking more the urban brown/black vote that did not turn out.  I know Harris County and Houston still had 33% of its electorate not vote.  There needs to be some grass roots movements in the urban areas of Texas to get these folks engaged.

It makes me wonder about the generational analysis and ethnic diversity of latinos in Texas.  Remember in late 19th and early 20th American history about the european waves of immigrants, how one wave would be displaced by arrival of the next wave from a different european country.

Thanks for the post and link; that was an interesting read. The takeaway, however, is that voter suppression is not working and is actually going to dwindle, as opposed to grow. The Purple and Blue is growing; it is an inevitable, and all you have to do is look at Georgia and to get a preview of Texas. I'm not even a Democrat and can clearly see what is happening and what the probable outcomes for the short and mid-term will be, which is a Blue Texas at some point soon. If well-resourced, former GOP voters who live in the suburbs take their minivans and leave to an already Blue state (e.g. exactly what Brisket is crying about doing), it will slow this change. And even then it might not matter because of the growing minority and democrat demography in the urban areas of the state. Just look at Georgia for the model of overcoming voter suppression and how the dense, urban city centers and that turn-out growth flip the state. That's the model. It's obvious to anyone with eyeballs, except Brisket.

I guess it would be hilarious to have a bunch of Briskets, 6th generation Texans, now living in Colorado, seeing a Blue Texas with the government they want and having to reconcile they were cowards and left before it happened because, unless the GOP can figure out how to get the LATINX, or at least the RGV, vote on their side reliably, it's an inevitability. 2020 was promising in that regard but still a lot of work to be done there.

I wanted to see if I could find out if that was actually Texarkana by zooming in on a business sign in that video. I googled the sign that said Tri-State Auto Sales and that is legit also because of the street location for the business. I am guessing someone flew a drone overhead to get that footage.

Yup. That’s State Line Avenue. Three big Liquor stores are just south of there.

I haven’t lived in Texas going on 27 years.  I never really wanted to leave Texas in the first place, but you go where the Navy sends.  I always longed to return home.

I retired from the Navy in 2014, but my wife’s work situation necessitated staying in California for a couple of years at least.  We had a grand plan to start building on our land in Plantersville in 2016 and move back to Texas by 2018 or so.

But things started happening that chipped away at those dreams.  My parents had become pretty involved in local politics.  Whenever we would come home to visit, it was Fox News at all waking hours and some community or political meeting every other night.  We’d go to Church with them and the Bible class discussions always had political points tossed in here and there.  It was exhausting.

Then 2016 happened and I saw my parents start to rationalize Trump and eventually go all in.   It culminated with my Dad actually serving as an alternate delegate for Trump at the RNC.

My wife and I had a good chunk of savings set aside for the construction project to start, but we delayed.  In January 2017, we made the decision to take that money and renovate our house in San Diego.

The decision was both heartbreaking and liberating.  I love Texas. It’s home. It always will be.  But I just can’t be there for long periods of time anymore. It is not the same place I remember.

People like fairy tales and myths and Texas has a lot of them scattered throughout its very real and very true history. Sometimes the myths and fairy tales take on a life of their own and that’s how you get Dan Patrick.
