Andy Tran and his fiancée typically walk the sleepy morning streets of Westchase to get their exercise and enjoy the day before the heat of the afternoon. But on Tuesday, their usual relaxing jaunt along Pagewood Lane near South Gessner Road was interrupted when the man—who remains unidentified—started shouting hate speech and other obscenities from across the street, Tran said in a phone interview Tuesday afternoon.

"My bells were getting a little rattled, but we were trying to ignore him," Tran recalled. "We were also thinking it was a joke at first, because this has never happened to us."

Quote

Tran, who is Asian, and his fiancée, who is white, continued walking. He took note that they were near an elementary school on its last day in session and didn't want to cause a scene in front of the schoolchildren, he said. The man initially turned around and walked away, Tran explained, but a few blocks down the road, the couple turned around and saw him walking toward them again. That's when Tran started recording on his phone.

Quote

If anything, I just want this guy to get help," Tran said. "This is all coming from a bad place in his life. Luckily my fiance and I are positive people, fairly light-hearted. If anything, we pity him."

Under the guise of "free speech", you have members of Congress and a damn news channel espousing bullshit racist theories. It's no fucking wonder that shit like this not only exists but is growing.

and the prior study by Pew

https://www.pewresearch.org/social-trends/2010/06/04/ii-overview-2/

Quote

The Fading of a Taboo: Today’s attitudes and behaviors regarding intermarriage represent a sharp break from the not-too-distant past. For most of this nation’s history, a majority of states had anti-miscegenation laws that made it illegal for whites and nonwhites to marry. Many states repealed these laws after World War II, and the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Loving v. Virginia in 1967 had the effect of declaring unconstitutional anti-miscegenation laws in the 15 states where they were still on the books.

However, attitudinal and behavioral change did not come overnight. As of 1987 — two decades after the Supreme Court ruling — just 48% of the public said it was “OK for whites and blacks to date each other.” By 2009, that share had grown to 83%. Acceptance has risen among all age cohorts, but it is highest among young adults. Among adults ages 18 to 32, 93% approve; among adults ages 64 and older, 68% approve.3

As a white dude married to a Mexican gal (no pics) I've witnessed and experienced racism like this, but not to this extreme. Unfortunately this kind of attitude is not all that uncommon. We were at Dillard's once and I was pushing the stroller on the other side of the aisle when one fo the employees (an older woman) suggested my wife shop in another section until they could get more people there (presumably to keep an eye on her). I wonder how her attitude shifted after it became clear that I was with her.

Another instance, we were in Jasper, Arkansas at a rock climbing destination and went into town for a meal. Everything was great and we had good service until a few old guys got seated across from us. Our server never came around again. Best we could figure she was afraid of what they would say or think. I ended up having to go up to the hostess and asking for our bill just so we could leave.

I'm not sure what I'm getting at, other than if you are a typical white guy who doesn't care about skin color you don't get exposed to racism much, and it is easy to think that it is something for history books. It ain't. But as someone who never had to deal with any of this due to white privilege or whatever you want to call it, it's kinda like trying to hit an unexpected curveball.

We are so much better off today than even twenty years ago especially in the south.   But still a lot of work to do.  I’ve heard some absolute horror stories about racism in the south but other parts of the country ain’t immune to this shit either

Breaks my heart that not only do people like this exist, it is relatively common.

And probably always will be.

Even worse is when you see comments like “he’s being obnoxious but what laws are being broken” in the comments section from a houston centric site.   This is what the coasts think of the south.

Your charts end in 16, 17. I wonder if there was anything that transpired right around that same time that would align with crash_davis's observation that racist fuckstick behavior is growing?

I would disagree, but I guess that depends on your criteria. I'm curious why you feel that way. My somewhat cynical outlook is that there has been a relatively constant amount of racism/racist beliefs in the country, but societal norms had done a better job of masking it. Now in our current  "fuck your feelings" era, people feel more  comfortable, empowered even, to let the flag fly.

Two things:

1 - it is growing again, the trends have reversed some.

2 - but more than that, the group who feels that way is now completely empowered and free.  Before, that dude may have seen a couple of that and muttered to himself "dirty race mixers."  But now, he's empowered to shout at them, confront them, and be a flaming asshole about it.  Because more than anything else related to this, our cultural celebration and exaltation of cruel, obnoxious assholery is the dominant social strain.

Different America decades/eras have their particular brand or characteristic.  The Roaring 20s, the Great Depression, the war years.....this will be known as the Asshole Era.  It's our defining characteristic.

I think it's nuanced and I don't disagree with your take completely.  But some of the things I've seen and heard or have had personal experiences that would rightfully get your ass in hot water now:

*had a HS classmate from arkansas that told me his town would just harass the fuck out of black families until they would just leave.  He said it with pride too.

*a white male friend of mine who did not get any service from a fast food restaurant in Louisiana because he was with a black girl.

*Hispanic friend of mine who couldn't rent a room from a Mississippi (way too early in the morning to spell that) motel so he just bunked with a mutual white friend.

*stupid sayings, from people who I thought weren't racist.  For example, "I like black people but i hate n*****rs." Do you remember what middle aged students would change the words to our favorite Christmas song? You thankfully cannot say shit like that anymore.

*Have seen or heard "can't you date someone white" far too many times in my life.

*Blacks are better athletes because they have longer achilles or an extra muscle?  Or they can't swim because they are too muscular.

All of the above was acceptable shit in the 90s- 00s.  Thankfully you can't say shit like that now.  Flip side though, I felt we got a long better back then too.  Everybody loved Eddie Murphy and Bill Cosby.  Didn't care they were black.  They were just funny.

Yup. Just because things have gotten a bit worse in the last few years doesn't mean they worse than twenty years ago. My SIL (no pics) was put in ESL right about twenty years ago just because she was Hispanic, despite speaking perfect English.

Oh, we definitely have an incel problem too.

When you look at the group of folks who have decided that "be a raging asshole in public" is super cool, you can usually look at the rest of their life and realize "oh.....he/she is also a total fucking loser."

Can't get a date, can't hold a job, doesn't have any healthy relationships.....and blames the world or, more importantly, blames everyone but themselves.

We've always had idiotic loser assholes.  They've rarely been this empowered.

Pew doesnt run this survey annually. But the data goes back across different administrations and the long term trend does not suggest any coincidence with any parties.

Hate crime compiled by the FBI also shows no change in incidences across the magic 2016 2017 years

I concede there has been TRIVIAL improvement in outward behavior,  but I think a lot of that improvement was societal norms telling people stop saying that shit out loud. There are still plenty of people that think "i like black people, but...." or "cant you date someone white". Racism isnt a uniquely American trait, it exists everywhere. But REAL improvement on that front is impossible to achieve in 10 or 20 year windows. True racism only disappears when different races are truly equal and interact with each other regularly on equal footing. As long as stark differences in wealth, education, professional success, crime demographics, etc... exist, its human nature to put people in different buckets, and assign reasons for those disparities.

The best example is people citing high crime and the incarceration rates of minorities and implying there is a racial component causing that. "well if the black people would stop shooting everyone, and robbing everyone etc...". In reality, its just the result of poverty and limited options. If the average income level of blacks was equal to that of whites in this country, if they lived in the same neighborhoods, if they held the same jobs, etc..... the percentages would even out. Thats the only way you eliminate the perception of inferiority.

I work for a software company. When I meet a new employee that is white or asian, it doesnt even register because it happens all the f'n time. But I so rarely meet a new employee that is black, that when it happens, I immediately take note. Humans are hard wired to take note of things that are out of the ordinary.  Only when it stops becoming a rarity, will my brain stop making that observation. We are a loooooong way away from  that point. And until we get to that point, its evidence that  a lot of underlying issues still exist.

That site is too cumbersome, so I'm not going to drill into each year and extract data, so i will assume statista has done so accurately and also assume this references the same data set( a lot of assumptions, I realize). The data in the graph below does seem to indicate there was a reversal the last few years and a new trend emerging. To be honest, I would like to see a constant data set spanning decades not just ~10 years.

image.png.ff70574c216bf2c83d3aa87b98a92350.png

And even a dataset of from one source (FBI) is limited in scope. What I see and hear on a personal level just through observation of the world around me seems to tell me shit is definitely going in the wrong direction. But I also need to be cognizant that social media and a phone in every pocket may also be influencing my perception about a reality that is largely the same.

He threatened violence numerous times (I'm going to kick your ass, that sort of thing).

Quote
Sec. 22.01. ASSAULT. (a) A person commits an offense if the person:

(2) intentionally or knowingly threatens another with imminent bodily injury, including the person's spouse;

There can also be a hate crime enhancement.  Publicly threatening someone with bodily harm because of their race is a crime in Texas.

It's also an admired virtue in Texas, so that's a conundrum for us.

The 7xxxx figures from that graph is broadly inline with the total annual numbers reported by fbi

But every year the # of contributing districts grow, so needs to be adjusted for that (they warn to be careful about YoY comparisons for that reasons)

Also we can parse out race-related crime from gender and disability and Aggy-related discrimination

But yeah i agree theres a tendency for media to overamplify narratives that might not be borne in objective numbers
