Think about the type of player you’re getting at Tech if he’s been money whipped extravagantly to go there of all places.

These are low IQ players, jumping at whatever money they can get and probably don’t have the work ethic, focus, or intelligence to really succeed and exceed.

Paying $5 million to one guy is not how you build a program. Even if it's a few guys you overpay for, and I get that the only way you can get them is to overpay, it's not how you build a program. Losers are gonna loser.

Drama drama. Brought to you by the idiots who fired Mike Leach.

You guys know there’s no salary caps right? There’s no budget? All this talk of “tying up money” in recruits is nonsense. We have almost unlimited money to spend and we should start acting like it. Do the Dodgers give a shit how much money they have tied up in Ohtani or Betts or Kershaw or anyone else? Do they let it stop them from signing more stars? No.

Dont look at 30 mil from your perspective.  If he has $1000 throwing $30 at something isnt that much.  Also, he has more than a thousand and it will continue to grow.

The outrage would've been from other teams/fans. "Texas is ruining college football!!11". People care a lot less when its an irrelevant Texas Tech program.

All I can say is that I predict the numbers keep going up until there's some kind of legislation or the system starts collapsing. Maybe this new enforcement mechanism does something to curtail the spending, but I doubt it.

Texas isn't going to ruin college football any more than it ruined the Southwest Conference or the Big 12. But I feel like you know that.

In any case, I did miss the point of the post.

I do feel like Texas Tech can spend its way to relevancy if they have the right coach. I have no idea if McGuire is that sort of dude, but if you spend enough more than everyone else year after year, eventually it comes together. That's assuming the Double Eagle guys continue to believe this is a good use of their immense wealth. And it assumes other programs don't get their own very generous benefactors and outspend them. But that goes back to my first sentence.

So bizarre - Tech currently has two low 4 stars in their class, all the rest 3-stars (other than Ojo).  So basically, they just threw their entire recruiting budget at Ojo.

The funny thing about Tech’s transfer class is they spent an obscene amount and ended up adding 3, maybe 4, guys that I view as real impact players to a roster that was otherwise fairly mediocre. For the most part, these guys are closer to Jermayne Lole level players than Mukuba/Golden.

The strategy doesn’t make sense to me, it’s not like they had an existing roster ready for a playoff run and just needed a few pieces. They’ll get tagged a few times in B12 play because it’s a random number generator conference and they go on the road to Utah, ASU and KSU. More than anything, they set themselves up to be national laughingstocks.

Look, if Tech wants to drop bags, they're more than welcome to. But I fear that they're going to learn that signing five stars does not automatically translate to wins. Tom Herman and Charlie Strong were also able to snag 5 stars.

It's really two guys. John Sellers and Cody Campbell. They both played football at Texas Tech. They were partners with Double Eagle. They're the guys who brought in the softball pitcher, NiJaree Canady, from Stanford, for $1 mlllion per year both last year and this coming season.

There is nothing wrong with deciding to take the money.  However just like the recent camps, he's a little bitch who plays games and cant handle things with maturity.  I wouldnt feel bad if he blows his knees.

I doubt Cody Campbell thinks like the haters that fired Leach. CC played four years for the pirate. And the speculation that Ojo won't end up signing seems odd. My understanding is that he has already signed so as to obviate any House Settlement consequences of his deal. I agree with those who believe he is a super-high risk to be locker-room poison, a 5* millionaire either riding the pine or getting humbled playing before ready. The cash is going to run right through Lubbock.

I believe the only consensus 5 star that Strong got was Jefferson so McGuire technically has more consensus 5 stars at Tech than Strong had at UT assuming Ojo signs to go along with Hudson. Just an interesting look back at the dark days of UT recruiting.

Mediocre for Texas, probably ends up ~10-15. A lot of depth/high upside multi-year "projects" that don't command serious NIL money, 26 will kind of end up a gap year imo. 27 & 28  will be the foundation around Bell

Dude there are three 5 stars in the class and it is June.  We got the #1 QB, #1 tackle, and an elite edge rusher on our board.  This class is going to be just fine, it’s barely July.  Let’s see the language in these contracts for these offers come August.  Let’s also see if Goosby, Moore, etc go pro a year early.  If they do, that will open up funds and we can flip guys.  Texas is trying to keep powder dry to keep their roster in place because we will make a legit national title run in Arch’s final year.  Hell, we’re going to make one this year and teams are going to do their best to poach from our roster.  Gerry and Bobby have said that every position on this team has a back up that will be a NFL player.  Texas wants to retain them instead of over pay for high school guys considering there is a cap, which may not even exist after law suits.  Chill…

Totally agree but with one small alteration.  I know I'm only one of the 82,258 lawyers on this board who post dumb shit instead of, you know, actually working - but I do feel pretty safe in prognosticating on this

I must have missed the time that the Dodgers gave a rookie they just drafted $100 million dollars to go play in the minor leagues for two years. Because that's essentially what a recruit is. A rookie that needs development time. In baseball, not worth $100 million. In CFB, not worth $5 million

Now if Jeremiah Smith hits the portal? Yeah, go nuts. But offering that money to a high school senior is regarded.

Exactly. It's like they spent a ton of money on new wheels expecting the car to now be faster and better. The wheels may be better but the overall car still won't win.

I guess as a Longhorn fan I'd rather have these players go to places like Tech (but obviously rather they go to Texas) rather than Ohio State/Georgia or some other school that's actually good.

With a little spare time, I decided to review the 247 info for Strong's classes:
2014: ranked 17 nationally - 5*: 0, 4*: 10 : Heard, Roberson, A Foreman, Duke Catalon, Poona, BLake Whitely, Lorenzo Joe, John Bonney, Edwin Freeman, Jermaine Roberts
2015: ranked 10 nationally - 5*: 1 Malik Jefferson, 4*:15  Holton Hill, Kris Boyd, Chris Warren, Wheeler, Locksley, Vahe, Burt, DeAndre McNeal, K Johnson, R Newsome, C Townsend, Omenihu, D Elliott, Buck Major, Cecil Cherry,.  Class also had NFLers Connor Williams, PJ Locke, and Michael Dickson
2016: ranked 6 nationally - 5*: 0 4*: 12 - B Jones, J Elliott, Duvernay, Fowler, Hudson, MCCulloch, Fitzgerald, DeLance, Collin Johnson, D Okafor, Kyle Porter, S Buechele

And Herman's
2017: Ranked 25 - 5*:0, 4*: 4 Estrell, Gary Johnson, Ehlinger, Graham - Damion Miller signed LOI and did not enroll
2018: Ranked 3 - 5*: 3 Jalen Green, Overshown, Stearns 4*: 13 Foster, Eagles, Jamison, Adeoye, Cook, Angilau, J Moore, Ossai, Coburn, Woodard, K Ingram, Ojomo, Reese Moore
2019: Ranked 3 - 5*: 2 Bru McCoy, Tyler Owens 4*: 13 Whittington, Floyd, Jake Smith, Tyler Johnson, Myron Warren, Adimora, Gbenda, Liebrock, Hoofkin, Watson, Washington, Shepard, D Brown.  Brown never played.  Notable 3* in that class: RoJo, Sweat, J Wiley,
2020: Ranked 9 5* : 2 Bijan, Alfred Collins 4* 12 - J Jackson, Card, Dorbah, Barron, Crawford, Alford, J Thompson, Broughton, Garth, Parr, Karic, K Dixon. Notable 3* Majors, J Ford

Strong recruited 1 5*; Herman recruited 7.

So far, Sark has recruited 12: 2021: 1, 2022: 2, 2023: 3, 2024: 2, 2025: 4

There were a lot ot recognizable names in Strong's and Herman's classes above.  There were quite a few I do not recall at all.  Such is college football recruiting.

Yep ... Tech came damn close to taking it in two games. If Canady didn't screw up that intentional walk, Tech may very well have done it, and basically with one purchased player. We may never see a more clear indication of how to buy a championship, and that's saying a lot after decades of watching OU and SEC football.

My biggest question in all of this is not so much how things shake out athletically over the next couple of years, but how colleges and the public react to the realization that we've torn down the last big walls between higher education and complete professionalization of sport. Not many folks talking about that right now, but it's a sea change. I wonder how it's impacting things at Tech, where Campbell, as chair of the board of regents (who's also got a business to run) seems to put most of his concern and time into athletics.

When the enrollment numbers really start dropping in the next couple of years, a lot of schools will be reassessing. The SEC and BIG won't suffer as much -- they'll just siphon off folks from the other schools. Tech and other second-tier schools will face interesting scenarios, as will all those lower-tier institutions.

Recruiting has always been an interesting topic to me.

It could be getting more interesting these days, not less.

The advent of an effective salary cap could - if everyone plays by the same rules - make recruiting more strategic and nuanced than ever before.

Previously, it was the same goal for every team:

Load up as much as you can every year, fill your needs, and move on to the next cycle.

Now, it is much more of a multi-year look. If you sign a high-priced wide receiver or two in year one, it may be difficult to justify doing so the next. Or if you have a big-time player coming off the books and graduating to the NFL at a certain position, it all of a sudden frees up money for an incoming spot at that position.

**

But I don’t think everyone will be dealing with the same amount of money over the long haul. Nor should that be the goal if you’re a Texas, Ohio State, Notre Dame, USC, etc.

Instead, the goal for any major team will be to increase the pot of NIL money players can receive by increasing a program’s third-party NIL.

So legitimate third-party NIL is recruiting’s next battleground.

From my first-hand conversation yesterday, leadership of the Texas athletic department is well aware of and focused on just that.

From Spiegelman. Pretty easy to read between the lines here.

Spoiler

Texas has been trending for the Temple(Texas) four-star EDGE since logging his official visit to the Forty Acres on June 6-8, which ultimately led to Carlton nixing his plans to return to Texas A&M the next weekend.

The Longhorns are fading in this one as July 10 nears. Baylor has usurped Texas as the team standing at the top — and Texas Tech has emerged as a legitimate contender late. Carlton officially visited Texas Tech in May and has continued to trend up in this recruitment after half a dozen trips to Lubbock since last spring.

“Texas Tech has stepped up a lot,” he told Rivals. “Regardless, they have always been there. They stay in touch every single day. They’re very consistent … Going down there to get the full experience, to see how they do everything, how everyone is in the locker room, how the players are … They vibe and they treat each other like family — on and off the field. Listening to the coaches, seeing how they coach, seeing how they develop people, and what they can do for me to turn me into a man … it benefited them a whole lot.”

The Red Raiders have plenty of traction to close strongly vs. Baylor here.

I think a big part of the point of spending $1 million on a softball pitcher was the message "if you're good enough, we're willing to blow our budget on you, too, so come to us and let's make a deal."

It's unclear just how much of their wealth the Double Eagle guys are willing to invest in the football program specifically, and the athletic program in general, but it's obviously quite a bit. And unlike Phil Knight or T. Boone Pickens, they're pretty young.

As far as declining enrollment, a good way to reverse that is to field a good football team.

It's hard for me to envision Tech becoming a new Miami of the 80s through early 2000s. Or the SMU of the early 80s. But they could be like A&M under Sherrill and Slocum. Dominate their conference with no top 5 finishes. Look at what a golden age Aggie fans think of that as.

OTs are not very common and are very expensive in the Portal. That's a premium position.

The one big difference is that with a portal tackle you have tape on how they have faired against college defensive linemen and shown their ability in college run blocking and pass pro schemes.

High school tackles commonly don't face D1 level defensive linemen and can get by simply off size, strength, and athletic ability.

His high school has won 1 game in the last two years so I don't Felix is facing high level prospects in practice and while their district includes North Crowley once again he isn't seeing a constant stream of defensive ends heading to the SEC.  He is going to see more 5' 11" 230 defensive ends who arses he damn well better kick if he is what he is supposed to be and I don't care about how he has done against highly rated defensive line prospects in pass rush drills in shorts and t-shirts.

Every school would love to have Felix as a prospect, but that isn't the question. The question is if you are going to commit over $1.5M a year for 3 years he not only better start yeart 1, he better be above average and that is really rare for true freshmen offensive tackles.

So NIL has to come from a 3rd party that is a legitimate business entity. Basically, all you need to do is create a hedge fund where a percentage of profits goes towards player development. That sounds easy enough. My brother was a VP in M&A at JP Morgan. It would take him all of a couple of weeks to set it up with coordination from the One Fund. And the companies that it invests in will use players as sponsors.

Honestly, Carlton is exactly the kind of guy a program like Baylor (and previously Tech, before the Double Eagle guys came around) should be looking to money-whip. He's not quite good enough for UT or Ohio State to blow a huge bag on because they'll have higher-profile targets. But Baylor could offer more and make him one of the focal points of the defense. If he turns into a stud, he could have a bigger impact there than he might have splitting time at Texas.
