So does this mean I can say he can have a smaller WAR since he’ll be only getting a paltry sum of 45-50 million with the deferred payments? I just want to make sure his contract is in line with his WAR because that is all that really matters. Gotta make sure he is not vastly overpaid.

/s

Remember when I said he wasn’t worth 700 (ans a player for his on field performance) and wasn’t getting paid that because of the deferrals. Yeah- 450 or 500 makes total sense.

I was totally the stupid one. Oh wait- it’s basically exactly what I was telling you.
and again- I’d have done the deal even if it was 10/700 and I was the dodgers. But it’s not because his on field production would have matched that.

Hahahahahaha…This is all kinds of awesome. Not only is he now only a 2 million a year player, but he has to do almost nothing to hit the expected WAR number of someone making 2 million. Someone needs to put all the analytics clowns that ruin the sport on deck for wellness checks.

The Dodgers just owned a whole bunch of people making fun of them for spending g money. Now he’s being paid chump change with a nice lotto sized payday to come in a decade.

All this is going to do is cause us to lose a MLB season. It is one thing to backload, this is blatant and will cause chaos if left unchecked. Fucking dipshit Dodgers fucking up baseball and will still be watching the WS from home.

Put the poors like Oakland out of business permanently. The Dodgers and other high spending teams should not be subsidizing teams not trying to win. Either spend or go bankrupt without the yearly welfare check from the Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox, etc. A move like this is amazing and I am glad to see it.

Most Spoken Languages in the World

1. English

Known as the official language of business, English is the most widely spoken language in the world, with the highest number of speakers, and the highest number of countries where it is spoken.

if Ohtani wants to transcend baseball and sport around the world, it behooves him to be literate in English.  Unless he has a dud personality.

It’s pretty well known in the baseball world that Shohei, just like Ichiro, speaks English confidently and fluently.   He just doesn’t do it on camera

Would suck if the dude dies before his big payouts start. The whole point of earning that kind of money is enjoying having that much money.

Considering that baseball has guaranteed congrats, I’m sure there’s some obligation that’ll it’ll be paid however he pleases…because those would be the people receiving the bulk of it down the road anyway.

Uh, I quit trying to understand MLB's CBA contractual minutia decades ago after the '94 strike.  But I kinda know finance.  Deferring $680mm for nearly a decade?  That's gonna just accidentally generate well over a billion dollars in the most modest of portfolios.  Who the fuck gets that money?  Ownership, I guess?  Or does it pool over into other roster contracts?  I mean, it's 'committed' right, but while it's parked in good faith, it's going to be invested even in escrow.  Somebody gets the proceeds...is it future payroll acquisitions?  Or?  This happens every year with small chunks here and there, but you're talking about a decade of well north of a half billion dollars.  Even a moron who can bankrupt the same casino twice couldn't help but kick off hundreds of millions from this.  What happens to that cash?

Yea this is bullshit. I’m pretty pissed but not at Ohtani not wanting to speak English on camera who the fuck cares about that?

Probably people who think the United States actually has a nationally mandated language. You generally know what types of people hold that viewpoint. Perhaps we should all learn a little Japanese instead.

All the professional leagues should encourage deferrals so the knuckleheads don’t go broke by blowing it on bullshit like ridiculous cars, houses, jewelry, entourage and other hustlers.

I used to think this as well, but it's just naivety.  For the guys who play just a couple years (as is the case with most professional MLB/NFL/NBA/NHL), yeah they blow it all pretty quick.  But as Daron Roberts at UT will tell you (he did an incredibly interesting seminar for soon-to-be pros from UT athletics of all sports and genders), do the math.  You'd have to spend more time buying cars and bottle service nights than you do training/playing your sport.  What, in the end, drains most long-term pro athletes?  Getting suckered into becoming a limited partner in a friend or relatives business model.  We've seen it at UT so many times, it's some white asshole with a pitch-deck who drains the signing bonus of some newly minted pro athlete faster than any stripper or hustler ever could.  It takes years at the club or flying private to drain $5mm.  But a shady confidence man can get that much in one business week.  The fact that just only in the last few years are high level athletic departments finally offering sessions in responsible financial planning to their student-athletes is very telling.  Shit, look at society as a whole.  We don't teach financial literacy to high schoolers or college kids for a very specific reason.  To keep them in the the dark.  If young people actually knew what was going on, they might start giving a fuck and voting.  And we can't have that.

Remember the first rule of politics.  The idea isn't that you give me your confidence.  The trick is I arrange it so that you feel you need me to give it to you.  Pro sports ain't any different.

And as long as he ain't living in Cali when the deferment payments start, he doesn't get taxed like crazy on those either.  Fucking Ohtani out here playing 4D chess.

Dude doesn't need the money, he's already filthy rich because of endorsements, etc.  Gets to let the Dodgers keep a team around him to go win.  Then he gets a huge lottery ticket when he's done playing.  Gets to skip most of the taxes.  Buys his own baseball team because he's a essentially a billionaire.  Genius.

this is hilarious coming from you, a professional social justice warrior who comes to a place like shaggy every day only to get upset at all of the foul language and austin 3:16 behavior, admonishing the regulars here and getting upset on a daily basis for one totally fucking unimportant thing after another. everyone else is in here trying to talk sports and enjoy themselves, meanwhile you’re constantly being offended and upset with everyone else. and you tell someone else they have a sad life? lol.

I’m sure he got advice on this but I imagine the Franchise Tax Board will go hard after him based on they acted during the IPO boom. Gonna ask our tax guys, pretty interesting.

You just cannot let go of being told not to say the r word. Even after leaving here for several months you still come right back hanging onto anger because you were told to stop using that word by multiple people. Grow up or don’t, not my problem. I suspect the poster that said you cannot handle this place due to your emotional instability will be proven right sooner rather than later.

At least, when your emotions become stable again, let everyone know that this is about the r word. Not about cussing (who cares), this is just you throwing a tantrum because you ran away when people told you to stop saying that word. 10 pages of the airing of grievances later and you left. Let’s see how long you last this time before you break from reality again.

So the speaking English thing was a fun tangent, but.........................................

Funny enough, I bet somebody $700mm last month that an Ohtani thread wouldn't devolve into a pissing contest over the word "retarded", but here we are.  Can somebody spot me a deferred $680mm while I get the rest together to pay him back?  Thanks in advance.  Cheers.

is Ohtani really giving up the time value of money and not getting any increase in total compensation for deferring?  the Bonilla deferred buyout comes to mind, so why would Ohtani give the Dodgers an interest free loan essentially (other than wanting to free up salary for stellar teammates)?

I have to believe this has not really been done before 'cause no other player would risk inflation (or new taxes) eating in to that 700M.  Fuck, the world or America may not even resemble today in 10-15 years.  700M could buy some kick ass zombie apocalypse gear or a private island or three with Airwolf, Blue Thunder AND Firefox to ferry you back and forth to the mainland.

Reportedly interest free.  So I guess you could say it’s something like a $650MM contract instead.

There's a "I know tariffs, I have the best tariff negotiating skills" joke in here somewhere.

Interest free?  really?  I believe you.  I just don't understand the structuring of this deal.  I mean, I get the financing.  but I don't get how it fits under the CBA or Dodgers ownership platform.  We can hyperbolic and say "This changes everything", but it really doesn't because nobody is gonna get this kinda deal for a long while and understandably so.  He's one roster spot for 3 jobs (if you count occasional PH/OF).  But yeah, the interest/deferral/accidental time value of money for 10 years is a weird twist that has yet to be explained.  It happens year-to-year with deals,  but never anything of this amount or duration.

This is not correct.  He's taxed if the income is earned in California.  And most of it will be.

as long as the Dodgers are paying Dave Roberts to be their manager and as long as Kershaw still has to pitch meaningful playoff games, they ain't winning shit.  unless COVID hits again and there's another shortened season.

Dave Robert’s does not seem to be great at his job and Kershaw might should be put out to pasture.

I think the thing that obviously makes baseball different from basketball or even football (Assuming you have a great QB) is that you still have to have the rest of your teammates perform because you only get 4 or 5 AB’s a game and when he gets back to pitching in 2025 he only takes the mound every 5th day. Getting Ohtani guarantees nothing. Deferring money guarantees nothing, but it does give them a better opportunity to bring in more meaningful and talented help.

Baseball is still an odd sport in how having him moving up the freeway is no guarantee of success. I sure would rather have this guy and a boatload of money to still go spend than to be the A’s, Marlins, Royals, Rockies or Pirates and have no shot to ever be in a position every single year to have a great shot at winning another title.

Agreed. The guy is a middle aged waiter in NYC with no ties to UT and pollutes the basketball and baseball with this shit.

I’m aware baseball contracts are guaranteed. Yes, in the event he passes away somebody will get the remaining payout. The Dodgers don’t get off the hook in that instance. I guess I don’t really see what’s in it for Ohtani to defer that much of the money. Fuck you, pay me. Eat the fucking luxury tax.

I thought at first someone must have been duped. I guess it comes from not often epecting athletes to do things that can best position their team to be as strong as is possible. Ohtani is just a different type of human being it seems. What little I have read about his family though does make this seem more plausible.
