We have a champions club.  It’s stupid at Wife beater state, it’s stupid at Maryland, and it’s stupid here.   It doesn’t motivate anybody.

I am surprised this is not a bigger story.  A kid is dead, I'd expect this to be running everywhere.  To me this is way worse than Urban hanging on to a wife beater past his expiration date.

Head coach is done and the school is going to get blasted with a giant lawsuit.

My son is a soldier at Ft. Polk. He told me that if somebody goes down with heat stroke symptoms, and the temp is over 104 the medivac him out by helicopter directly to the base hospital.  Under 104 they treat them in the field.

Somebody done fucked up. .

  • bob in houston changed the title to Maryland player died of heatstroke, DJ Durkin placed on administrative leave

Beyond the obvious horrible story about the player who died, I am not sure how this will affect our game. On one hand, that team will be very distracted, which obviously is advantageous to us. They will also have a rallying cry to get behind. Fallen teammate...disgraced coach, etc. Matt Canada was a shitty OC at LSU, so who knows how he will be as a head coach on short notice. Safe to say though, DJ Durkin will not be the coach.

ESPN is taking no prisoners. DJ Durkin may not last long.

The inside story of a toxic culture at Maryland football

I’m all in favor of tough love. Holding lazy asses accountable and treating men like men. But this shit goes beyond old school basic training he’s fucked. Art briles has a better shot at getting a new gig over this guy

Yeah, that article looks very bad for Durkin and the Maryland program.  A kid dying and not being given the proper care for an hour makes the trainers look completely incompetent.  Interviewing players next to the coaches office giving away their anonymity makes the administration look bad too.   Seems like the bullying culture was spread outside just the coaching staff.  Maryland is going to have a big lawsuit on their hands.

I'm thankful Herman and his staff preaches hydration to the extent that they do. This young man could still be alive if the staff who were there to coach him would've given half a shit about the well being of the players under their charge. This was absolutely a preventable death and every swinging dick who could've done something to save his life and did nothing needs to be crucified for their ineptitude.

Current and former players also described several incidents where staff members targeted players because of weight issues. Sources said a former offensive lineman whom the staff deemed overweight was forced to watch workouts while eating candy bars as a form of humiliation. Another former Terrapins player said his inability to gain weight resulted in members of the strength and conditioning staff sitting with him at meals to make sure he ate.

"They were trying to make me gain weight really, really fast," said the player, who left the program. "That involved me overeating a lot, sometimes eating until I threw up. They always had me come back for extra meals. Once, I was sitting down eating with a coach, and he basically made me sit there until I threw up. He said to eat until I threw up. I was doing what they asked me to do, trying to gain the weight, but at the time, I just couldn't gain the weight, and I guess they weren't understanding that."

Dumbass trainers.

That type of forced behavior, especially if repeated is textbook bulimia. Possible side effects?

Severe electrolyte imbalance Chronic dehydration, which is not uncommon with bulimia,  can cause critical health issues. Low potassium levels in the blood can cause heart arrhythmia or cardiomyopathy.  Calcium levels are reduced which weakens the bones. Low magnesium levels could result in dizziness, fatigue, seizures, muscle cramps, irregular heartbeat.

When your sodium level is off, cell can become dehydrated which could manifest itself in muscle cramps, headaches, seizures, intracranial hemorrhage and yes, death.

If the ESPN story is remotely accurate on this issue and if it was used with other linemen, like Jordan McNair, they are increasing the likelihood of these tragedies.

With the cause of death being listed as "heatstroke," most of the symptoms are the same as those caused by bulimia or binge eating.
