One observation I've had is that these people tend just not to think things through. It's like they're unable to do second-order (and beyond) thinking, so they're always shocked by unexpected consequences.

Lol... These idiots still don't realize the DEI stuff is just a bullshit catch-all to cover what they are doing. Anyone who remotely falls in that category will be cut if they aren't necessary to the cause. All they want is sycophants in high positions to make way for the real change that's going to happen in the next few years.

White women are (were) the overwhelming beneficiaries of DEI.  So yes, your daught “works” for DEI.

As usual, Democrats are fucking this opportunity up.

Dems need to make sure people know that while these are dOTarD's policies, the R's in Congress are just letting this shit happen. Dems need to be hammering that message- Congressional R's are just as culpable as DOtarD.

That ain't gonna work for me, brother. I agree there are a lot of good people who are being hurt, and good people who did the right thing and voted for Harris. I would drop everything in a second to help them.

Unfortunately, we don't have a list of who voted for whom in this country. Since I can't verify if you voted to stop this madness I can't help you. Because, when it comes down to it, my desire to see people who voted for this or didn't vote at all enjoy their consequences outweighs my desire to help people at all.

We raised our girls on volunteering for service to the community. Can't count how many roofs we've been on for habitat for humanity, how many meals we've delivered, and how many hours sorting and stacking boxes at the food bank. All of that stopped the night of the election. I will not use my time and resources to support those who voted for, or failed to vote against, having me and my family persecuted. And there's well over a hundred million of them roaming the streets of this country, and a majority of this state.

We shifted all of our efforts to animal charities. Because fuck Americans.

Mother. Fucking. This.

Check out this weekend's latest This American Life when y'all get a chance. In a rarity, they devoted the entire hour to a single story about a man going down what basically sounds like a Qanon hole and the effects that it has on the family. Basically, the conspiracy theorist dad makes a $10,000 bet with his adult son that his 10 far-out ideas will come to pass by the end of 2025, which they reveal the results of at the end of the episode. The son takes his father up on it to see if his dad can come back to normalcy after being proven all his predictions are wrong.

You can guess the results, but I think it's still worth a listen--especially for those of you who feel like you're losing (or have lost) your parents or other family members to the cult.

It looks like it'll be available to stream after 7pm this evening.

We may all be in the shit in a year because of Trump. Even in the shit, I will have little consideration for those who voted us there or sat passively by.

Have spent a fair amount of time in Germany the past few years.  Their cultural take on their national character in the nazi times is solid, I think.

They discuss the events leading up to, during, and after the war very matter-of-factly.  I was just in the museum on the history of the city of Frankfurt.  No whitewashing of the shit that went down, and how it went down.  Frank display and discussion of how the city got bombed to hell.  And through all of it, there's a running theme, even if it's unspoken -- "we had it coming."  There is no protest ("they didn't have to bomb us THAT much!"), no explanation or justification ("we were snookered by a really bad guy, honestly, he tricked us into being nazi shitheels!")...none of that.  Just frank "we went full nazi, and as a result, we got blown to smithereens.  The whole country.  Damn near every building in many cities.  That's what fucking happens."

That's where we are.  And that's why I say that we ALL have it coming, and NONE of us are absolved.  "I voted a different way" doesn't cut it.  If you aren't doing shit to throw sand in the gears and actively resist and fight back, then you're a willing accessory.

And yes, the time is coming, sooner than you think, where some of those decision points will include "am I willing to die to stop this?"  Y'all think I'm over-the-top, speaking in hyperbole, all that shit.  That's what people thought in Germany in 1933, too.

If that is an accurate characterization of your view of the legitimacy of gerrymandering, then you deserve to be shat upon.

I've done that.

Then the mob on here just dumps a bunch of "dumb aggy", nazi, racist, blah blah blah on me.  Then a certain someone goes through my posting history and does a lot of neg repping to, I assume, get me sent to purgatory (it's actually a thing on this site).

This time I think I actually represented your view on gerrymandering accurately.  I remember the discussion on that issue, and my concern was that it led to members of congress not representing their district’s interests, by creating districts that aren’t actually places or real communities of interest. Your view at that time was that the congressional delegation should more or less map to the way the state votes in presidential elections. Is that not your view? Has you view changed?

As you know I don’t consider you a conservative in any real philosophical sense, but I would love for more Republicans to post here.

I think, and thought back then, that areas that are majority Republican should have representation that is Republican and areas that are majority Democratic should have representation that is Democratic.

I will agree that the congressional delegation should "map" to the way a state votes...

If the state is 57-43 Republican, the representation in Congress should be close to that.  If it's 57-42 Democratic, it should be close to that.

That shouldn't be too controversial.

It’s extremely controversial. What defines an “area”, and why should the party of the presidential candidate it supports have anything to do with the party of its congressional representative?

No offense Ag, but I have never heard your defense of why gerrymandering districts so that politicians can absolutely and in total safety ignore any good ideas of the other side - and also be safe to refuse to seek  bipartisan compromise (to avoid being primaried by MAGA or a pissed off Trump) is  a good thing.

That sounds to me as valid as building our next generation battlefield tank out of grass.  I mean, I’ve never been in the military, and I’m not an engineer, but there is also a basic common sense/human experience thing that whispers in my ear - even on subjects of which I am not well-versed.

If you don’t wanna give it a go in public feel free to private message me. I promise not to share our discussion and to engage in a polite and respectful way.   But I admit to not being able to conjure one good thing that would come of that system of fully gerrymandered districts - at least not without seeing your input.

The offer is genuine.

Nm.   I should’ve read to the bottom of the thread again.  I thank you for saying that you like that idea, but you failed to say how it avoids the problems I specifically mentioned.

It’s kind of like me asking why you think all muscle cars should have four-cylinder engines, and you reply more cars should be cheaper and painted red.   Well, those two things are absolutely legitimate standalone propositions, they don’t address the obvious problem with putting a four-cylinder engine in a muscle car.

You can also look at the Senate races.  They'll generally be close to the same representation as the presidential candidate.  In addition, you can look at state legislature representation - just use statewide offices to get the percentages.

Should the congressional representation be 57-43 Republican if the state votes 59-42 Democratic?

Well, the only way we have of determining that is Presidential elections, which may or may not be representative of a population's more "daily" voting.

In 2024, Texas went  about 56-42 Trump, so R.

Yet, the Congressional delegation is 65-35 R.

Is that close?  Or is that fucky?
