I got into a fight with a kid in the 6th grade over whether Dave Parker belonged in the HOF or not. He would have been inducted next month (so I win, finally).

I'll always remember that throw to Gary Carter in the All Star game. That was incredible.

He had another throw to 3B to gun down Jim Rice in the same game.  The two OF assists helped him win 1979 ASG MVP.

Those throws, Ichiro's laser, Vlad Guerrero's famous throw, and Bo Jackson gunning down Harold Reynolds at home plate are the most iconic OF assists I can think of off the top of my head.

Maybe I was blinded because I was a kid, but those game seemed to mean more then. At a minimum they meant more to me. Can’t recall when I last watched or even checked out an all star game box score. If I had a ticket, I would go for the first few innings.

Kind of grainy but both of those throws are in the video/ X post in my reply above. Funny how guys thought they could run on Parker. His arm is right up there or above with Clemente, Bo, and Ichiro.

Rifleman. RIP Cobra

Those games did mean more.

There was no interleague play back then and free agency hadn't taken full effect yet. players played the same team (or almost) for the entirety of their career. Switching leagues was also not common. The ALL Star game really pitted the best of each league and it was important to show which league ( at least for a night ) had the better players and format ( no DH in NL).... The National League DOMINATED the 60's-'87, losing only 4 games in that span and a streak of 11 straight from '72-82.

D. Wayne Lukas, 89

Quote

D. Wayne Lukas, the Hall of Famer who became one of the most accomplished trainers in the history of horse racing and a face of the sport for decades, has died. He was 89.

His family said Sunday that Lukas died Saturday night at his home in Louisville, Kentucky.

Lukas had been hospitalized with a severe MRSA blood infection that caused significant damage to his heart and digestive system and worsened preexisting chronic conditions.

"Wayne devoted his life not only to horses but to the industry -- developing generations of horsemen and horsewomen and growing the game by inviting unsuspecting fans into the winner's circle," his family said in a statement. "Whether he was boasting about a maiden 2-year-old as the next Kentucky Derby winner or offering quiet words of advice before a big race, Wayne brought heart, grace, and grit to every corner of the sport. His final days were spent at home in Kentucky, where he chose peace, family, and faith."

Lukas won 15 Triple Crown races, including the Kentucky Derby four times. Only good friend Bob Baffert has more Triple Crown victories, and Lukas owns a record-tying 20 in the Breeders' Cup World Championships.

They really did. I haven’t caught up on the thread, but I’m guessing the other middle-aged guys like me remember Parker and a shitload of us had those wonderful Pirates caps.

I remember when I was in the 6th grade, a classmate was loudly talking about how Parker belonged in the Hall of Fame, and the teacher got pissed and got in a fight with him and said Parker would only get in when he’s dead.  What grown-ass adult gets in a fist fight with a kid in the 6th grade because the kid likes the Pirates?

Probably a fucking Cincinnati Reds fan, that’s who.
