I had some front flank downdraft yesterday, but that's because I farted while sitting in a leather chair.

Is that what you call it when the fart bubbles up the front and escapes from one of your fupa folds?

No, a front flanker is when it bubbles up, but you have to shift side-to-side in your chair to let it slip out the front.  Which is also an effective way to blow-dry your nads.

The severe weather threat level has increased to a level 2 out of 5 for most areas including the Austin metro counties, while parts of the northern Hill Country are now in a level 3 out of 5 risk for severe storms.

The main concern would be for strong and damaging wind followed by large to very large hail, but an isolated overnight tornado can’t be ruled out.

Tomasco says this might be the 2nd highest rainfall total amount per hour in US history.

Without looking, but Alvin, Texas ??

He's basing it on a rain gauge that picked up 2.68 inches in 15 minutes, which translates to 10.7 inches per hour. That would be the 2nd highest ever in the US.

The highest was in Missouri. 3rd was in Rockport in 1889.

Crazy we didn’t get a drop in my hood (78735). Sunny the whole time.

To be fair, that one was based on that microburst downdraft that was right in the middle of the city. I bet those happen 20 times a year in the US but since they typically are small in area (like 2 square miles tops), they likely never occur over areas with official rain gauges.

More than a few people called in to work today to say their power was out and would be working from home.

How is that supposed to work?

Starlink mini with a decent sized portable battery bank.

It's one of the reasons why I got my Starlink and only activate service when there are no other options.

Pretty sure the secretaries aren't running that rig.

Which version? The job is talking about issuing one of these setups to me. Im in a commercial grid so i rarely lose power, but we gotta be sure.

Far West HEB

My stepson works there.  He usually does curbside pick, but yesterday it was all hands on deck restocking all of the refrigerated & freezer sections.  They lost a massive amount of food.  I dropped by to pick up some things without realizing how much stock they had lost -- the place was gutted.  There was nothing left but dry goods, some produce, the pharmacy and a little bit of deli meat and cheese.  I can't imagine how much money went into the dumpsters.

The lowest level for Buchanan over the last 14 days was 997.48 on May 21. This morning, Buchanan is up to 999.30. There should be some more runoff filtering down over the next day or so.

Wasn't there a Tesla crushed under the Greystone Texaco canopy as well?

I'm not gonna suggest that God hates Teslas, but...

I understand that they can't just "temporarily" take all that stock to other stores to keep from losing it, but I kinda wish that they had a system to look at the clock, realize that all that stuff is gonna hit critical temp in, say, 4 hours, and call the foodbank and say "come grab what you can - you have two hours."  Hell, even if they used an HEB refrigerated truck and volunteer labor to load it.  Just seems a shame to lose all that food when people are in need.

Agree, but unfortunately it’s just not that easy. My FIL is a retired ag economist who has spent his retirement years working tirelessly on hunger issues. He is primarily responsible, although he would never take credit, for the success of the food bank in his community. One of the things he works on is getting food to food banks that would otherwise wasted. We’ve had long conversations about this exact type of scenario and how frustrating it is to see food get wasted. The logistics of getting this food out of the grocery store, into temperature controlled transportation and into storage at a food bank all during what is an irregular operations situation is highly difficult. Not that it can’t be done, but there’s still inevitably going to be waste and it’s not as simple as calling up the food bank and saying “come and get it!”

If any grocery chain can figure it out and implement a solution its HEB.

Best run corp in the world IMO.

Totally agree, which demonstrates how difficult it is to do. They know logistics better than anyone I can think of. They should run FEMA.

Don't we all, God... don't we all.

Got another 1" of rain this morning.  I'm enjoying this.

I'm surprised they don't have backup generators to run their refrigerators and freezers. I know several grocery stores in coastal areas do because of hurricanes. Guess it's cost prohibitive if inland.

Starlink Mini on the Roam plan which is $1 per GB. I simply pause service when I don't use it. And I just carry the entire setup (Starlink Mini with power bank) in my laptop bag since it takes up just as much space as a laptop.

It really is the best connectivity device to have in outages like this week, any dead spots when road tripping, and high cellular network congestion during large events.

buchanan has had a full week now of 1000 cfs inflow.  its amazing how much water that lake holds.

Yeah, most of the newer HEBs in the Houston area have generators. For those that don’t, they bring in big ass units on trailers and have them hooked up and ready to go when there’s activity threatening in the Gulf. Obviously, in this type of situation they didn’t have a long enough lead time to bring those trailers in.
