"There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known"

-Sagan

Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there--on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

-Carl Sagan

I think that was Carl's greatest legacy.  The stories and the science and the exploration are all fascinating to me.  But Carl always returned to one notion when describing these images...we are all stuck together on that little blue marble.  Like it or not.  It's been thousands of years of everybody thinking it was theirs and their gods.  But it's not.  We have to take better care of it, and of one another...because it's an awfully far walk to the next house.

We could use Carl right now.  But in a way---I'm glad he's not here anymore, to see how we now celebrate scientific ignorance as a virtue.

csb…I remember going to a Cowboy preseason game (because they were free) way back when they were still in Irving and they had some promotional fliers on every seat.  The game obviously was boring so in the middle of the 3rd quarter everyone was making paper airplanes trying to land it on the star.

I know it’s a real pic but I don’t know how this perspective was captured since Mercury is 37 million miles from the sun.

Maybe the photographer asked Mercury to "move a little closer"?

Yeah, we're totally the center of the universe.

Human existence isn't a miracle.  Miracles are a sick person being cured or a guy with a gimp hitting a game-winning home run in the World Series.  Miracles are parlor tricks and fun coincidences to talk about at parties.

That I am here right now, in the midst of all of that, with the ability to absorb and even rudimentarily understand it.  And my wife and two daughters are along for the ride with me.  That's no miracle.  It's an incongruous impossibility.  It's so unlikely to have happened, that perhaps it's not even happening at all.

That my daughters and maybe my grandchildren, god willing, will get to see what the Webb Telescope sees.  That's a miracle.  What it will show those of us willing to open our minds and our hearts...is that not only are we not the center of everything.  We're not even the center of nothing.  Webb is going to break a lot of souls, but it's also going to bring most of us much closer together.  What happens after that may be just short of impossible.

BA jet flying from Gatwick to Costa Rica has its windshield smashed by block of ice which fell from a plane flying 1,000ft above it

The passengers were taken to a hotel where the only available meal was from a Denny's fast food restaurant and were then taken back to the airport on Christmas Eve for a planned 10pm departure.

That Denny’s is attached to a casino. If you’re going to be stuck anywhere within 10 miles of the SJO airport, it’s where you want to be.

The website format is a bit cringe, but some cool videos of these all time high dives, including those that went poorly. My favorites are the first guy doing chill interview at the top during Wide World Of Sports and the dipshit dressed like a clown that knew he screwed up but still jumped and almost killed himself.

just now reading this a week later....

those are some of the most entited fucking passengers on the planet.

Oh my god I am going to miss Christmas in England because  BA had to make an EMERGENCY LANDING due to the plane being kinda un-fucking-safe to fly, when the airline industry had the most number of flight cancellations in  a single week in its history.     waaaaaaaaaaaa

It looks like evolution opened up in a Claire's in my body! (seriously, why is everything so bright?)
