We aren’t getting a new WR coach. Jackson just signed a two year extension.

I was traveling all weekend and this apparently didn't even make it to the coaching/staff thread. This is terrible news. I am now in full blown panic on the offensive side of the ball.

Michigan State TE Michael Masunas

After redshirting and not playing a snap as a true freshman in 2022, Masunas proceeded to play in 25 games with 12 starts over the next three seasons before entering the transfer portal ahead of his fifth and final season of eligibility. More of an in-line blocker than a receiving threat, Masunas has 24 receptions for 270 yards and three touchdowns, but all but five catches and 38 yards came from the 2025

Surprised we are looking for a career backup. We have plenty of those.

Im not in full blown panic mode, Im just not expecting big things next season. Sark is who he is and hes rolling with the same staff and offense as the 25 season. If we can upgrade the personnel on the OL, RB, and WR, it cant be worse right? Especially with Arch's ascension as a leader and a stud. I expect our OL to be average, I think the receivers will be slightly better. I still think theres a very good chance we upgrade at RB and that becomes more of a strength. I think issues will persist with penalties and special teams play. Muschamp's defense is the great point of hope.

The Michigan State kid is an inline blocking TE. What is the current rotation at the position? (rhetorical). 12 package benefits greatly with an inline blocking TE.

There are other good running backs out there that are better than Wisner and Baxter. My confidence is dropping though that we know what we are doing. Our top two candidates at the position never even made it in the portal

Out of bed? No sweat.

A few feet from the bathroom door? Now we're talking.

Two things can be true: 1. It's not time to panic, and 2. The staff is off to a bad start.

It's early but to have only one non-specialist commitment after weekend 1 is pretty poor. A lot of high-end guys around the country have already committed. Texas had plenty of visitors and didn't close.

This morning, Gerry tried to deflect that he implied and made us believe Isaac Brown was going to enter the transfer portal, visit Texas, and that Texas would be favored to land him. I like OTF, and they are the best of the $9.95 sites, but sometimes they are a little too optimistic once a player is on the Texas coaching staff’s radar.

Why didn't we hire Matt Campbell and Eric Morris?

Eric Nahlin: Competition for Texas' top transfer portal targets

Texas wasted little time getting important portal targets on campus. But other than special teams and a key defensive piece, pen wasn’t frequently put to paper. The main reason for that, is, their targets are in demand. It’s a lot like high school recruiting in that the better the player the harder they are to land. Defensive tackle Ian Geffrard is a bit different—they leaned on him a bit and he really wanted to be at Texas. It’s the perfect spot for him and he didn’t over-think it.

Caden Durham, RB, LSU—AND RB IN GENERAL

Conjecture: Oklahoma, Ole Miss, SMU, Texas A&M

We’re only listing Durham because he’s been mentioned so frequently, especially after Isaac Brown re-upped with Louisville. You could probably add a couple of other names that Texas should have some interest in—Baylor’s Bryson Washington, UCONN’s Cam Edwards, Washington’s Adam Mohammed—but Texas isn’t in love with the current portal crop. Texas is still watching what Jadan Baugh elects to do. Often in this line of work when it rains it pours only for the sunshine to eventually come out and dry everyone’s pants. Part of me is waiting for the other shoe to drop but I don’t have any new intel one way or the other. Florida remains confident he’ll stay.

Cam Coleman, WR, Auburn

Solid: Texas A&M, Texas Tech, USC, Alabama

The Texas visit was good, he definitely enjoyed himself, but he was at A&M on Sunday and the expectation is he’s going to take all of his visits. We’re working to uncover more outside receiving targets. There are better options than at running back, though we know Texas can be quite selective at times.

Kyle Parker, WR, LSU

Solid: Ohio State, Notre Dame, USC, Ole Miss, BYU, Kentucky, Tennessee

We’re watching to see if interest picks up. There has been “some” communication but not a ton.

Michael Masunas, TE, Michigan State

Not sure who the other competitors are. In-line player who is a good blocker and credible receiver. Would be a perfect fit to pair with Nick Townsend.

Andrew Sprague, OL, Michigan

Solid: Missouri

We anticipate he’ll take that Missouri visit. With starting experience and multiple years of eligibility remaining, he’s a very attractive target, especially to Texas. My guess is the initial Texas offer will need to increase a bit. I know there’s optimism on him despite not signing. Missouri pursued him hard out of high school so there’s some familiarity there. I wouldn’t be surprised if he takes other visits than Missouri or if Michigan tries to keep him. He played RT.

Jake Guarnera, OL, Michigan

Conjecture: Florida

The new Michigan coaching staff is probably the biggest treat to Texas with Guarnera, another multi-year eligibility option. The expectation when he left campus was he’d take other visits. He played RG.

Zion Williams, DT, LSU

Solid: Texas

Texas should be in the drivers seat unless something changes. They need another big “big” in the developmental pipeline and he is that.

Donta Simpson, DL, Miami

Solid: Texas, Washington, SMU, Illinois

Same high school as Derrek Cooper and Edwin Joseph (listed below). You wonder if Texas met someone influential at that school while recruiting Cooper. Or maybe it’s just a big coincidence. Simpson is a true freshman who played 100 snaps for the Canes with reps split evenly between nose tackle and defensive tackle.

Kenny Ozowalu, DL, UTSA

Solid: OU

He visited OU yesterday and is supposed to be at Texas today. He’d be a 4i. Good, young player.

Jayden Woods, EDGE, Florida

Solid: Texas A&M, Oregon, Missouri, Ohio State, Florida

Demand is going to be crazy for this given the priority on pass rushers. That’s a lot of visits to shake out. He’s supposed to meet with Florida again early this week.

Robert Woodyard, LB, Auburn

Solid: Kentucky, Missouri, Baylor, Florida State

We think it’s going to be Miami.

Cade Uluave, LB, California

Conjecture: UCLA, Utah, BYU, USC

Texas wasn’t caught off guard by his portal entry so that’s a pretty good sign. He’s originally from Utah. You know Tosh Lupoi will work overtime to recruit him to stay.

Bo Mascoe, CB, Rutgers

Solid: Ohio State

Intimate familiarity with Mark Orphey should carry the day if the financial offer is in place.

Edwin Joseph, S, Florida State

Solid: Texas A&M, Ole Miss, NC State, Clemson, Georgia

I’m not sure just how hard Texas pursued Joseph. He has a long list of suitors.

Ian Geffrard, DT, Arkansas

Committed: 1/4

Big need, like landing Cole Brevard but even more important given the addition of Will Muschamp and more three-down defensive line play.

Gianni Spetic, K, Memphis

Committed: 1/4

Mac Chiumento, P, Florida State

Committed: 1/4

Trey Dubuc, LS, New Mexico

Committed: 1/4

Some of you guys were really hurt over Texas trying to field special teams units next year.

Ian Boyd: What Muschamp's transfer portal moves say about his plan for the Texas defense

Will Muschamp has quickly been pretty busy in the transfer portal working to add pieces to the Longhorn defense for the 2026 season. One of the first commitments for Texas of the portal season was the 6-foot-6, 389 pound Arkansas nose tackle Ian Geffrard. The Longhorns have also hosted players like UTSA defensive lineman Kenny Ozowalu who wouldn’t necessarily have been on the list of player types you’d expect Texas to be targeting.

So far players who have drawn interest from Texas include Geffrard, Ozowalu, Cal linebacker Cade Uluave, Florida State nickel Edwin Joseph, LSU nose tackle Zion Williams, Rutgers cornerback Bo Mascoe, and Miami defensive tackle Donta Simpson. These targets paint a picture of Muschamp’s intentions for the Longhorn defensive strategy next year.

Filling in the defensive backfield

Simply by doing math on which players are back and which are not, it’s easy to guess at what positions any given defensive coordinator would want to refill for Texas in the transfer portal. The Longhorns have to replace three starters in the secondary (out of five in nickel personnel) and 1.5 starting inside linebackers depending on whether you count TyAnthony Smith as a returning starter or not.

As expected, the secondary isn’t in huge need of major reinforcements because of the volume of younger players who have shown promise to date. Amongst those are freshmen Graceson Littleton and Kade Phillips, who both started against Michigan and appear to be the future of the Texas secondary.

Mascoe is a very well-rounded player that Texas cornerbacks coach Mark Orphey coached at Rutgers in 2024. If Mascoe followed him to Texas he’d be a favorite to start. Presumably he’d fit at corner but he’s excellent in zone coverage and as a tackler so he could also factor in at Star (nickel). Florida State safety Edwin Joseph was the starting nickel for the Seminoles this season.

Either of those players are good enough that they’d essentially tip the positional direction of Littleton. The addition of Mascoe would probably keep Littleton inside, unless the staff sees Mascoe himself as a nickel, while adding Joseph would indicate Littleton is probably joining the fray at cornerback. Phillips and returning safety Jelani McDonald are basically entrenched leaving vacancies at the second corner spot, second safety position, and Star.

At linebacker Texas needs more players just to have functioning depth but the most obvious addition would be a player who can be more of a typical Mike linebacker and fit interior gaps with some pop. Uluave would be an obvious addition for any team after making 100 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, and three sacks last year at Cal. He would certainly fit well as a B-gap linebacker playing next to Smith.

The plan up front

The big question with Muschamp’s return is whether he’ll lean more on the 4-down fronts of yesteryear or take Texas into the newer world of 3-down defense with the “Mint front” that has become a major component of Nick Saban-tree defensive coaches for combating spread offense.

The reintroduction of Mint (Todd Orlando ran it at Texas from 2017-2019) seemed likely enough before we saw Muschamp begin to make moves to reshape the defensive line and now it appears inevitable. Both incoming Geffrard and potential target Williams are massive individuals who are obvious two-gappers in skill set. You can use players like that in a 4-down context, Pete Kwiatkowski certainly did, but in the Muschamp scheme these guys tend to fit as two-gapping zero-technique nose tackles for the Mint front.

If the nose can post up the center (rock him back) and play in either A-gap based on where the ball goes, the defensive linemen can aggressively play the B-gaps from 4i-techniques, and now the linebackers are freed up to scrape and flow to the football. They aren’t needed as primary defenders in any of the interior gaps and a burner like TyAnthony Smith can fly sideline to sideline.

Inside-Texas-diagrams-3.jpg

The tell Muschamp intends to deploy these big two-gappers at nose tackle rather than say, as heavy 3-techniques like PK might have done, is the interest in Owozalu from UTSA. Jeff Traylor has used the Mint front for years dating back to Gilmer and that’s where he had the 6-foot-4, 270 pounder playing for the Roadrunners. Owozalu may grow into a 3-technique, as he’s currently only a redshirt freshman, but his “tweener” body type is ideal for playing as a strongside end or 4i-technique.

That position requires some length and strength to survive playing with an offensive lineman on your outside shoulder rather than a smaller tight end or wide open space to work in. Charles Omenihu remains the greatest 4i-technique to ever play at Texas and a good model for what you want at that position. Muschamp’s apparent plan to help Sark build “West Georgia” is underway.

Bobby mentioned the WR coach was being retained last week. If one of your receivers consistently drops the ball then he has a case of the drops, when all your wideouts consistently drop the ball then it is coaching.
