Down 0-2, game 3 is about to start

The game yesterday was rained out, that is why they are playing a DH today.

Aggy won the only game played so far today 3-1 and the second game just started. The third game is tomorrow.

Clemson is tied with Miami currently for fifth place in the ACC, how do they become #1.

Talked about this with an Aggie at a pool party today. Family full of Horns and he said look, those fuckers HATE Texas and he said no way Schloss and co was ready for it.  Seems like every Texas coach has to learn this the hard way.

This was kinda like Sark’s first trip into Arkyville!

Cody Howard was our best pitcher this series?

Yes and quite honestly I think the staff has to certainly think about finding a way to incorporate him into the weekend.

I also say that as someone who didn’t think he deserved to make the roster but to his credit he has shown better command as the season has gone on. A 95-96 mph fastball plays at any level, his delivery and arm speed creates good deception to his changeup and slider.

Stats wise he certainly was in 3.1 innings he gave up 1 hit, 1 walk, 1 obligatory HBP, 0 runs with 3k's.

Howard should start. No, but he may get looked at some more in meaningful games. He has had some really good outings lately.

Pretty sick to have to wait until May to lose a series... Schloss will help the boys make lemonade out of this, we'll bounce back.

Also, for a team that "wasn't ready" for the SEC, the entire conference throws a digital-kegger any time we lose - that's respect.

This weekend can officially get fucked obviously.

but like I said earlier in the thread, it is typical in baseball for really good teams to go through an eat shit couple of weeks. Augie used to talk about it all the time. The key is fighting through it and regaining the confidence and playing hot before June starts.

I would have preferred it not happen against Arkansas because fuck them but they caught us at home a week after series with agros and had their garbage weekends leading up to this.

salvaging a game today goes a long way in safely procuring the sec title so they need to give them hell today. Gotta fight through the adversity.

hook’em.

Welp, now we just have to hope this is the 2005 series against Baylor.

This weekend was fucking awful. However, I never expected that we would get through the SEC without losing a series. I never thought we were going to be at the top of the SEC in May.

If this is a great team, this weekend will just be a bad memory.  They will make adjustments, learn and adapt. If this is just a good team, this weekend will slowly poison the rest of the year.

I don't think a coach can prepare a team for a rivalry game that the team has never experienced as a rivalry.  We've at least played aggy every year one way or another, so someone on the roster has experienced it.  Same with blOwU.

That's a bit different from what Mack did with OU because I think a) Mack was intimidated by Stoops because b) Stoops always outcoached him and frequently out-talented him.  Mack personally had to treat it as just another game because he always doubted winning it.

With Schloss and Wiener I’m not worried about it being poison pill. Now that doesn’t mean we will got undefeated the rest of the way but I don’t think they will let this bleed.

It's all about the kids having a good time at the state fair. Ride some rides, get some fried butter, maybe a cookie. You can't just go get explosive plays so why bother.

Baseball isn’t like football or basketball.

You don’t just get amped up and play harder for a 3 game baseball series because you’re motivated to.  You don’t throw better pitches or hit better pitches because you hate a team.

Losing always sucks.  Some of the self-imposed pressure to keep the #1 ranking should be lessened now.  Caught bits and pieces of the game off the phone today while in Houston.  We weren't prepared and pig was waiting in ambush.  IMO Cody and Dre' both had serviceable outings which was kinda a surprise considering the magnitude of the game.  After that I'm not sure what other positives we can take away from this series.   Lamar in town on Tuesday, time to start a new streak.

100% agreed. Somehow Augie could selectively use rage to motivate but mostly it's routine and finding calm and having set progressions that get you through high energy moments. The only anagalous football player to a baseball player would be the kicker.

I hope some of our younger fan base got a dose of the jackassery on display from their fanbase the last three days.  I’m sure there are clips on social media to give them enough of what many of us who had the nerves to sit through the three games saw on TV.   I hope we get another shot at them later this month or in June, but if not I hope our fanbase comes out on fire in November when they come down to DKR.

Those who never saw us in the SWC days can’t appreciate how heated the rivalry was back then.  I’d say it was more heated as far as hate than our rivalry with aggy at least in 60’s and 70’s.   In the  80’s it might have cooled off because we both kind of sucked at different times in that decade then they were off to the SEC where they became irrelevant in football.

‘60s is where Fayettnam came from. Many Horns fans came out to damaged cars after games, even if it was in Little Rock (can’t remember if they played one there). Texas tags without Pig stickers meant bad business crossing the state line, even though half their roster was from Texas, hence the Pig paraphernalia required!

Texas played several games in Little Rock in the 70s and 80s. My parents went to one of the early 70s games in Little Rock.

From the 60s onwards, having Texas license plates and Ar-Kansas gas stations refusing to sell you gas was the most common problem that  Dad/family/friends experienced.

In 1969 the Texas Band had to drive across Arkansas into Oklahoma for fuel.

No station in Arkansas would sell it to them.

Absolute true story.

I had a buddy who was in the LHB in the mid-to-late 80's. He did two trips to Fayettenam with the band and both times their buses were met at the state line by Arkansas State Troopers to escort them the entire time they were in the state.

I can only assume this treatment was the result of previous experiences with their trash fanbase.

The whole angle of how much Arkansas hates Texas and Texas just isn't ready for the hate is incredibly overrated.  There might be memories of a rivalry for the old timers, but it simply isn't a major factor across the board.  I was at the football game and it was a flat crowd - there was no juice at all.  I didn't see so much as a horns down gesture the entire game.  TCU the season before was a much, much more hostile crowd.

This baseball team has been due for a bit of a course correction for a while.  It was fun beating Aggy by one run three times, but those games could have gone either way.  Texas pitches well in their home park.  The injuries have piled up and the team isn't particularly deep and has been overachieving all year long.  Getting swept on the road to a top 10 team sucks, but we don't have to invent reasons like Texas/Schloss just weren't ready for the intensity of the rivalry.  Better to hit this stretch now than in a regional.  Fight through it, refocus and win the damn conference.

Came to post this

Im also pretty fucking sure Schloss knows there is plenty of hatred that Arky has for us. Saying being unprepared for that aspect is one of the reason we lost is laughable

they beat us straight up. We played like shit. It wasnt because we were scared or lacked fire. Jfc guys

One (really more than one) factor in the Arkansas rivalry is that things have changed outside of athletics and general university rivalries.

Before WWII, Arkansas and Texas were more similar than different, rural agrarians plus oil.  But Texas blew up in the post-war economy while Arkansas struggled with a post-rural economy.  Thus bred the general jealousy expressed in the university/sports rivalry.

But with Walmart and the resurgence of NWA, things are starting to equalize a bit.  The rurals that probably fueled aspects of the rivalry are even more marginalized than before.

And, of course, UA is full of Texans now.

This is Earl Campbell’s experience with Arky:

quote:

In Arkansas, raising the Texas Longhorns' "Hook 'em Horns" hand gesture is frowned upon by most Razorbacks fans.

But on Monday afternoon at the Little Rock Touchdown Club's luncheon at the Embassy Suites, one of the greatest Longhorns got away with it.

As Earl Campbell, 63, walked to his chair on the Touchdown Club stage, he gave the sign as most of the crowd roared with laughter.

"Only Earl Campbell can come in here and do a 'Hook 'em Horns' sign and not be booed out of the room," said David Bazzel, the Touchdown Club founder and former Razorbacks linebacker.

In a 13-9 victory at the University of Arkansas on Oct. 15, 1977, Campbell rushed for 188 yards on 34 carries. While Campbell didn't score a touchdown against the Razorbacks, his only reception was one of the biggest plays for the Longhorns. A 28-yard screen pass from Randy McEachern to Campbell set up Ham Jones' go-ahead 1-yard touchdown run in the fourthquarter.

Campbell said he remembered the screen pass, but it was the postgame moment that heremembers the most.

"I remember coming to Arkansas and getting the screen pass and all that," Campbell said."Then, 'Bam! What is that?' Cops were telling me to 'keep your head down, son. They're throwing bottles at you.' I said, 'I didn't do anything.' Cops said, 'Just get your a** out of here.' "
