Why exactly do we need spikes?

It was a fast, hard slide and the 2B ended up in a bad position, completely blocking the bag. It happens.

Lulz the bots won against our shitty ticket site (that or only ~20 tickets were available).

I got in about 5 seconds after 10 and selected 2 tickets

saw they were GA so went back to select 1 to see if there was anything better: “seats not found”.

Then tried two again: “seats not found”

whatever inventory there was, gone in less than 10 seconds.

Plastic cleats on this sort of turf is simply awful. It’s incredibly slippery and a bigger safety concern than getting spiked.

Could have Jonah did a better job of controlling his foot?  Maybe.  Could the fielder do a better job?  Maybe.  Could the throw have been better?  Maybe.  If this is the biggest bitch, we as TEXAS BB fans have right now, then we are in good shape.  You need a little controversy in your life, well here it is.  Oregon got robbed (IMO), but rules are rules.

It’s definitely a really high but I think he was trying to get his foot over the glove since the fielder is pulled into his path and not in a position to make a tag. Agreed not dirty just unfortunate

Can’t be there without the ball, but it was completely unnecessary to slide so late you’re essentially standing up. It’s Utah valley for fucks sake so I refuse to feel bad for Oregon.

Yep, the fielder ducking low to try to catch the ball brought his neck shoulder into the play whereas if he was standing up. Jonah slides into his legs which is common in baseball. Jonah's slide was on time and not late with the intent to blow into the defender. The real culprit was the shitty throw.

No it wasn’t and no way should he have been kicked out.

And because baseball is played in cleats and turf is still slick. Is that a real question?

Holy shit what a complete hose job. The Oregon runner even tried to stop and put his hands up to brace himself. Whoever the replay guy was/is needs to be removed from his position.

Just as a clarification, defender can be there if they are in the act of fielding the ball. They don’t actually need possession

Yes, let's please get back to readjudicating yesterday's slide at 2nd base by Jonah ad nauseum.

the hilarious thing about what happened is the Oregon guy is going to slide until the catcher completely blocks his path with his left foot so the guy pulls up because he can't change to sliding head first and it is too late to try to get around him.

had he slid he probably tears up the catchers ankle/knee and his own.  everyone gets even more hurt. as it was what he did(go to his knees and brace for a hit on the catchers chest) probably was the least malicious thing he could have done.  Umpires are fucking morons, even with replay.

It wasn't my intention to muck it up.  It was my intention show and give an example of what a real controversy is.  Not everyone saw the play or even heard of it, so I merely offer it for educational purposes.  Jonah and cleats are good in my book, perhaps the namby pamby Jonah haters can start a different thread.

I think the obvious answer to whether it was dirty or not is that I don't think Jonah would intentionally hurt anyone or do anything dirty while playing baseball. He's just a big kid out there. Once the HCU player got up he went over and addressed him - I'm guessing to apologize.

Maybe he fucked the slide up but like others have said it was a shit throw and the 2B willingly put himself in a bad position.

If needed, clarify the rule in the offseason. If it is actually egregious, today as a point of emphasis.

if Oregon, the call by ump was safe.  they replayed to call Malicious Intent or some such nonsense.

Anyone have 2 extra tickets for tonight’s game?

Prices spiked after 10am when the daily allotment went on sale, presumably from increased demand from buyers shut out of getting tix through UT (but also very possibly seat geek fuckery).

I waffled on two tickets upper level right behind home plate for $120 each and they were gone after thinking on it for two minutes. Got two a couple of sections over for the same price. They’re now in the $140-$180 range for the same area

GA has been climbing from $65 immediately after the bots/“brokers” bought them up at 10:00:01  (for $10 face value) to $90 half hour ago to $123 now.

There just isn’t a lot of supply right now (seatgeek with only 77 listings—62 with a quantity of 2—so you’re looking at only ~150 total tickets available right now. Definitely a sellers market.

Will see if that changes during the day.

In soccer that would have been a straight red card and the discussion would have been how many additional games he would be suspended beyond the standard One Game suspension you get for a red card.

The goals of a slide are different in baseball ️ vs soccer ️, but that left leg coming up and making solid contact with an opponent would be a straight red. The fact that it was in the area that it was would be the reason for additional games.

And the studs on soccer shoes are relatively smooth and sometimes soft plastic. Baseball spikes are weapons as soon as they leave the dirt.

Wow insane. I guess I should have sold my ones for tonight versus giving them to my buddy. He’s going to owe me one for sure.

After watching the slide a few more times, he’s just trying to get around the glove rather than sliding directly into it, so it’s definitely not intentional or dirty.

I’ll have my formal apology submitted by morning.

thank god baseball is not soccer.  straight reds are given when no contact is made because flopping.

his foot is going to come down at the bag. the problem is the dumbass fielder decides to dive for a shitty throw 3 feet towards 1B.  can let it go and not get hurt very easily.

the second baseman ran into his foot. whoever thinks that the slide was dirty is crazy. the second baseman didn't have to dive in the baseline but he was competing. sometimes you pay for it when going all out.

I can buy this.  The key is “bigger” safety concern.

This a bitch response.

As for the slide, he started inside the bag when the defender was inside the bag.  At one point he rolled on his hip and to finish his foot was so high it’s never going to touch the base thus allowing more time for a tag.  I cannot imagine many defenders being pleased with the lead foot being roughly 12-18 inches high when it arrives at the base.  And I can’t imagine a coach believing that slide was good.  Yes, it was a wild throw but that’s not uncommon.  It’s not uncommon for the fielder to try and catch it either.

As for my question being legitimate, yes it is.  So, first, not all MLB players wear metal.  And sorry for not being a field turf expert but no other sports to my knowledge wear metal spikes on the stuff.  Obviously, there is significantly more contact in those other sports, but there’s also tons more movement.  Now the below is not the same situation but it does highlight a health consideration.

Earlier in Posey’s career, he wore metals.  His switch to MCS stemmed from a devastating leg injury back in 2011 when he snapped his ankle on a play at the plate.  Posey is unique in that he switched BECAUSE of the downgrade in traction he gets from MCS cleats.  By wearing MCS, Posey accepts the decreased acceleration and handle to avoid having his foot “snagged” in the ground, a common reason for significant baseball injuries and partially to blame for Posey’s stomach-churning ankle injury two seasons ago.
