It would have been much wiser to never allow SpaceX and NASA to become as [somewhat irreversibly] intertwined as they have, where critical aspects of American spaceflight are directly under control of an unhinged drug addict, not to even begin to touch on what an incredibly massive national security problem Starlink is.

Alas, here we are.

No, see, allowing manufacturing of critical materials like semiconductors and whatnot to be controlled by other countries = STRATEGIC IDIOCY

but

Allowing manufacturing and control of entire swaths of critical functions and infrastructure to be controlled by a single mercurial drug-addled malignant narcissist who openly states that he is above and apart from all laws = 5-D CHESS GEENYUS.

Alas, here we are.

Elon's immediate threat to dismantle the Dragon capsule, potentially stranding Americans in space, proves the point that he shouldn't have control of SpaceX.

A reasonable CEO of SpaceX could over time decide that they don't want to be in the business of ferrying NASA astronauts but that would be a long term decision with years of notice. Instead Elon is making that decision between snorting line 3 and 4 of ketamine.

given the national security implications of SpaceX & Starlink, the US govt should force him out of SpaceX leadership as well as prevent him from seeing some information. He can still own a large percentage but he shouldn't have day to day control.

NASA did everything better than SpaceX, like literally everything. I know you want to count numbers from 11 to infinity but this is just low effort trolling.

Certainly agree that we're in a tough spot wrt space capabilities at the moment. It would be fun to go down a counterfactual rabbit hole I guess, but I think that it is silly to suggest that NASA methodology has demonstrated superiority to SpaceX methodology. I am sure that there are case studies and data on this shit to dig up.

Can’t stand elon as much as Trump but truly scary that we have a president having an internet fight with a business person and threatening to ruin that persons business because of their disagreement. It’s just one more demonstration that Trump is a wanna-be autocrat who governs by fear.

im hopeful that elon does continue to stand up to trump because of the worlds richest man caves, maybe we’re not far off from 2015 Trump saying that he could get away with murdering someone on 5th avenue.

It should be exactly as you write: truly scary. But, it's just another day. There's only so many times I can say, "He should  be in prison or on a gallows for this outrage!" before I start feeling like the outlier. It's in plain sight. These actions were unthinkable ten years ago.

We're never, it seems, going to be mad as hell and determined not to take it anymore. A solid majority voted for the pustule and his ways or acquiesce to it daily.

A petty rapist, liar, failure, fucking idiot, and coward has been elected to be the face of this country. WTF?

Back in the 80s, I read that at the time of the moon missions NASA was something like 93% engineers. By the 80s, it was under 5%. It's bureaucrats who don't know how to do anything.

"He can't be trusted."

I've been thinking a lot about this the last 24 hours, in a crazy pills/simulation kind of way. There is no "Imagine if Biden did this" equivalent to compare it to. I guess the closest thing would be if he gave Hunter the power to access literally anything he wanted in our government, destroy anything he wanted, etc. while being all coked up and telling us to just shut up and trust him. And then disowning him and telling us all he can't be trusted and that he has a serious drug problem.

And in this case, we can't even get the question asked.

@Anastasis please address this reply from red5 in your explanation

thank you for your attention to this matter!

Seriously, I can already hear it. "Now I'm not saying I condone what he did. I don't. That's terrible. But no one is perfect, and I for one still support our president...."

there are a minimum of ~5m white girls ages 14-17 in the US right now

75% of those live in a household with a father, so let's say 3.75m

white men voted 60% for trump

that's 2.25m fathers of white girls ages 14-17

that's the target cohort

i don't know what the message is yet

but that's the target

Any failure of NASA can all be laid bare at the feet of anti science republicans that want to cut all funding, the same is true in the sciences, basically all big research positions are more politicians than scientists (something a lot of critics like Sabine Hofstater constantly harp about) because funding is evaporating, and well they have to be begging 24/7 for money.

I posted about contrasting methodologies and outcomes. Your response is that the real problem is that we don't throw enough money at it.

Pretty much encapsulates the broken brained worldview of certain ends of the political spectrum.

And, now, this -- prop bets!

Will Trump Have Musk Indicted? You Can Bet On It — And On Other Trump-Musk Feud Wagers

https://www.mediaite.com/media/news/will-trump-have-musk-indicted-you-can-bet-on-it-and-on-other-trump-musk-feud-wagers/

Quote

Will President Donald Trump have Elon Musk indicted? Will First Lady Melania Trump go to work for Musk? Those are just some of the Trump-Musk feud bets you can put money on.

The political media world was rocked Thursday by the in-hindsight-inevitable explosion of the Trump-Musk bromance. It began with a tiny ember a few weeks ago when Musk told an interviewer he was “disappointed” in Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill.”

That ember produced a flame Tuesday as Musk unloaded on the “disgusting abomination” of a bill, and that flame climbed the drapes when Trump fired off a few lit matches when he was asked about Musk in the Oval Office.

But things went absolutely nuclear when Musk unloaded all over X/Twitter and dropped his most explosive barb — a brutal claim about deceased criminal Jeffrey Epstein.

“@realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!” Musk wrote.

No sooner had the fight erupted than gambling sites began taking prop bets on the feud. According to Gambling 911, you can get odds on a long list of outcomes that include the indictment scenario (25 to 1) and Melania working for Musk (100 to 1).

One of the scenarios appears to have already happened. The site BetOnline.ag was offering 25 to 1 odds on “Musk to Call For Trump Impeachment” — although technically Musk didn’t call for Trump’s impeachment, he merely agreed with someone else who did.

Here are the odds for Trump-Musk feud bets, according to Gambling 911:

What will happen first?

  • Trump to Post Photo-Shopped/AI Image of Musk – 1/1
  • Trump Mentions Musk Drug Use – 2/1
  • Trump to Terminate DOGE – 3/1
  • Musk Endorses Democratic Party – 14/1
  • Musk to Call For Trump Impeachment – 16/1
  • Musk to Be Indicted – 25/1
  • Either Challenges Others to Fight – 33/1
  • Trump Orders ICE to Deport Musk – 50/1
  • Melania to Start Working for Musk – 100/1

Trump has made a reference that some have interpreted as a shot at Musk’s drug use, but not a direct one.

Oh, you missed the second part of SCOTUS's actions today.

Yes, the Court did this:

But it ALSO did this:

Need the TLDR version?  Sure.  DOGE can have all of the people's data.  But the people cannot get any of DOGE's information.

We live in an oligarchical autocracy.  It's done.

The idea that nationalizing SpaceX is some kind of crazy notion is so funny to me. Like, why do you think he basically immediately walked back the Dragon capsule threat? He knows how the game is played.

If he actually seriously tried to follow through with that threat, not only would they instantly invoke the Defense Production Act to nationalize SpaceX and fold it in under NASA, they would also make good on the threat to revoke all of his contracts and subsidies and he would never receive a dime of taxpayer money ever again.

Don't kid yourself, Elon may be extremely powerful but he is not as powerful as the US government and it would launch even him into the sun if he dared to seriously threaten US natsec interests.

Trump and Musk both make me puke.  That said, show me NASA landing a huge booster smack on the “X” mark on the deck of a fucking barge at sea, no less, and then I’ll concede an edge to NASA.  Then again, I made a C in high school physics so WTF do I know? I know I will die and be cremated and my ashes will be scattered to the four winds with me ever having voted for a Republican candidate in a presidential election. And I have voted in all them since 1972, inclusive.  And Joe Namath was across the goal line in the Orange Bowl. And the score is still Texas 21, Alabama 17. I don’t trust “the cloud,” either.
