This is who we’ve always been. We try to cover it up with rah rah USA USA USA chants and are taught that we are just the most incredible nation in the history of ever. The state has always been violent and has sanctioned terrorism against certain out groups.

Yup, I've been saying it for years. For decades the American public has underestimated just how many of our fellow citizens that don't like the past 60 years of this multi-cultural, multi-racial democracy and want to bring it back to pre-Civil Rights era. I was watching a documentary on Netflix called Hitler and the Nazis: Evil on Trial and the parallels between us and 1930s Germany are eerie, the only thing missing so far is the Brownshirts in the streets beating and killing people.

Yep. When I was in California one thing we knew was you better be on your P's and Q's there in the business world. If you were a national corporation it was understood that California was where the majority of your lawsuits were going to come from. Hiring policies were more stringent, as were most workplace laws for both sides. Texas is pretty boss friendly by comparison.

Spot-fucking-on.

Mostly white people have fallen for the bullshit line of "yeah, it's the poor brown people who are fucking you over."  And the billionaires are doing all they can to make sure that the gullible mostly white people get even dumber, so they keep buying into their bullshit.

I have posted that cartoon so many times - honest question...is that supposed to be Rupert or was this put out years ago and predicted the future Simpsons style?

Protest movement doesn't do shit without a charismatic leader that takes over and incites millions to action.

That's what the Democrat politicians lack. They don't want a fight. They want to keep pre 2025 status quo and just collect their bribes and live in their gates mansions.

What they aren't understanding is trump and republicans are making a play for total power taking away their way of life. There is no more status quo. They either have to fight or they will lose the golden goose they've been fed by for decades.

If Newsome understands this and is willing to now be the leader who will mobilize and fight then it sets the stage for a sort of civil war. Fought first online, then taken to the streets. Millions of American citizens who hate what trump and Republicans are doing are just waiting to be led into resistance, and the worse trump gets the more motivated people will be to fight. It just can't happen without a true leader.

I like your gusto and will be there right next to you, if/when it comes to that.  But before a civil war can we try to take congress in 2026?  I am not saying that's a bullet proof solution.  I am just saying that's where we should be focused now - and to your point, yes we need leaders to emerge...Newsome has been a pleasant surprise.  I have no idea what Obama is doing.  I understand he put in his 8 years and doesn't owe us anything, but he sure af could help if he decided to lead again, and God knows we need it.

A lot of truth to this. On the English side of my family, I have relatives that are very working class; my cousin is a hairdresser, her husband a black cab driver (his dad was a black cab driver, his uncle is Alan Ford, the actor that played Brick Top in Snatch, haha awesome). My cousin and her family left London for the cheaper deserts of Spain probably 25 years ago. Her husband always bitched about all the immigrants/crime in the UK, kind of a Trumper before it was cool. Love the guy, but I think they were just sick of barely getting by in London.

That would be great, but the election isn't for a year and 5 months. This has gone from "status quo US government" to the authoritarian shithole government we see today in 4 1/2 months. The main problem is that military and government personnel are not refusing to break the law for Trump. They're happily breaking the law and violating the constitution without any resistance. What's that going to look like in another year and a half?

The organized resistance under a charismatic leader has to happen now. It has to build up an army of citizens who want to fight against this and organize them. That's needed just to hope to slow down the fascist takeover long enough to make sure we even have elections in 17 months that have any chance of being legitimate.

Trump's republicans are morons and clowns. But they have no shame and no ethics. Their stupidity and incompetence makes them vulnerable, but they still have to be defeated with force. They will just continue to take whatever they can if they continue to meet no real resistance.

Bow out of what, though? It’s not like he’s constantly in front of media. He’s just been golfing, doing lectures, and doing podcasts with Black influencers.

This is lunacy.

The resistance now needs to be leaderless, organic, and grassroots. That will make it credible. That’s how it will actually make republicans think twice, give Democratic politicians a spine, and get everyone else off the sidelines. It should at least have the veneer of non-partisanship.

Besides, if arresting politicians is now a thing, there’s no reason to put all our eggs in one basket.

In any case. There are leaders (plural) if you look for them. Go to your nearest no kings rally and find out who your local leaders are.

It won't work. We're far too gone for that. No protest movement can work on this big a scale without a charismatic leader to get it organized to follow behind. Where is the civil rights movement without Dr King?

That's not all that's needed. You need lower level leaders to organize around the country too. But it won't work without a leader at the top to rally it all behind one cohesive movement.

I don't understand the constant demands that protests be peaceful. Like obviously, we don't want people getting killed, but peaceful protesting doesn't fucking work. Hell, the Biden admin arrested over 3,500 peacefully protesting, pro-Palestinian college students alone, not even counting the non-student protestors that were arrested and brutalized around the country.

Civil disobedience and disruptive protesting is the only kind that works. They're going to try and kill you either way.

You do realize those peaceful protests were incredibly effective against the Administration that was in office at the time.

The protests weren't effective. This nation full of idiot Muslims who were too stupid to understand the concept of choosing the better of 2 evils and voted themselves into a far worse situation did the damage.

Peaceful protests work in democracies where elected officials have to worry about being voted out. Doesn't do much against insane authoritarians who only have to worry about being assassinated to lose power. Unless that protesting is generating the rise of a leader to organize and unleash a resistance force against the authoritarian regime.

Israel has never been less popular in the US, and Kamala never promised anything close to the Witkoff ceasefire deal, so I wouldn't say the protests have been unsuccessful or that voting for Kamala would have helped anything.

Israel deciding to go full genocide in Gaza has made them unpopular. Not protests. The protests are simply a symptom of unpopular/horrific actions. They aren't fighting against it.

Biden and Kamala aren't allies of Palestinians. No American president would ever be a Palestinian ally as long as Israel is the lone American ally in the Middle East. That's where nuance comes in and Muslims had to realize Trump would be both an outright enemy of Palestine and an enemy of their own interests living in the USA. They wanted to punish Biden and Harris by choosing someone who will not only fuck Gaza just as badly, but fuck them here in the US too. Just sheer stupidity.

Protesting has to have a unified objective, organization, and leadership to be effective in thwarting authoritarianism. And even then it has to lead to outright resistance and rebellion against the dictator and his people.

If Newsome is capable and willing he could be that guy. Americans who aren't brainwashed maga morons are wanting to fight back. We just need the leadership to lead the fight. Millions are begging for Democrats to get angry, get ruthless, and lead a resistance force against this authoritarian garbage. Now is the time.

I'm not going to criticize anyone who couldn't in good conscience vote in the election. If you're going to single out Muslims, you'll need to show me the data that proves they would've swung enough states to change the outcome in the Electoral College, which I have strong doubts was possible mathematically.

Newsom is demonstrating some badly-needed leadership from the Dems and I'm grateful for that but his governance has left much to be desired, almost as bad as Eric Adams.

Start doing a hell of a lot more like he just did over the last couple of days. Call out trump and republican corruption. But not in an intellectual way. In a visceral way. Tell Americans everything they're losing. Make them fear the future under the dictator.

Would have to start coordinating with other Democrats to form a resistance force. To leverage all of the hatred and fear in these No Kings rallies. Tap in to the growing desperation as the economy craters and more and more people lose their jobs. Make sure trump and republicans wear their failures and oppression.

A lot of the work needs to start in the shadows. Maybe it's going on now, but knowing the history of Democrats I severely doubt it.

Most likely they'll pretend this is politics as normal until it's too late and trump has total control of the government and beats the courts and justice dept into submission through intimidation.

Conflating Arab-Americans and Muslims isn't completely accurate - according to the Arab American Institute, only about 25% of Arab-Americans are Muslim, with about 2/3 being Christian (five of the most populous Muslim nations - Indonesia, Iran, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Türkiye - aren't Arab at all). The terms shouldn't be used interchangeably.

You're completely wrong. I don't have anything against Muslims as people. I hate that they propagated anti democrat rhetoric in their communities and influenced the election in Michigan and Pennsylvania. All because they believed the lies of a proven liar and convicted criminal. A man who instituted a Muslim ban in his first term. Pure stupidity.

I called out Latinos, especially ones in my family, for the same thing. Voting for people who actively speak and act towards subjugation of them.

Same for Christians. Supporting this administration is pure hypocrisy. Goes against everything their religion pretends to represent and believe.

You can go ahead and get emotional about it all, but it doesn't make you correct. Just makes you appear emotionally unstable and unable to grasp nuance.
