And just like in this thread, when this was initially posted on this board the California crime apologists went berserk denying that there was an issue in the area.

No. They simply said that the entire city was not representative of one high crime area.   You are generally safe visiting New Orleans, but I can guarantee you that I can point you to several neighborhoods that if you walk around there, you will more than likely be mugged.

But I know who the guy is and I’ve seen his social media.  He really seems to love the artist known as Lil Thug.

You mean Young Thug?

(who is currently in prison for gun and drug charges stemming from a RICO case)

That was the excuse they used to close that site, IMO. The location was horrible (behind a closed Wal-Mart), which made it difficult to find (barely visible from the highway and not at all from the main road off the exit). There are no major stores in that area that would draw people in, especially at night. The Panda Express next to the site is still there; and there are fast food restaurants off the main part of the lot.

I just got mugged at the chevron getting gas before rental drop in beautiful Oakland.

Always opt for the gas fuel option when renting a car.

In-N-Out Burger is closing its Oakland location permanently due to safety concerns related to ongoing crime in the area. This is the first time in the company's 75-year history that it has closed a location. The closure, effective March 24, 2024, is a result of frequent and severe incidents of car break-ins, property damage, theft, and armed robberies affecting both customers and employees, according to a statement from In-N-Out.

Blue circle is where the In-N-Out was located. I’m surprised they had any customers. The big building was the location of a Wal-Mart that closed in early 2016 and has been empty ever since. Yes, there were a large number of car break-ins; however, they could have hired security to monitor the parking lot.

The A’s leaving likely had a major impact on the decision. With them gone, there isn’t much of a reason for anyone to be in that area.

We were in San Diego a few weeks back and off the road, tucked back between two hotels has an I&O, it was so packed that at certain times, the drive-though line blocked the entrance to the hotel parking lot.  Those things print money.  That this was the 1st closure in more than 7 decades begs the question it was more than just poor location planning.

Sure, if your sole intent is convenience. There is no 100% right or wrong because trips differ, but you're generally ending up behind financially on pre-paying.

The case finally showed up on the docket, and I got more information post-arraignment.  My situation is only one of three felonies he was charged with.

He has one prior serious felony conviction, and California has a three strikes plan that includes a doubling of your sentence if you have one prior conviction.

If he has found guilty of robbing me (second-degree ) and the one prior strike is counted, he is looking at anywhere from 4 to 10 years in jail - and a second strike.

He is also charged with two other felonies involving other parties on other dates NOT involving gas station muggings.  Each one of those others could be a second strike as well.  I assume (could be 100% wrong) the DA could also bifurcate the charges, find him guilty on one of the three for the second strike, and then later convict him of the third one and send him for a long stretch or life.   Which are pretty good grounds for taking a deal and pleading to avoid that possibility.

Dunno.

But my guess would be that he pleads to all of them and gets 8 to 10 years in the pokey.  In any event, I don’t think I’ll need to go back to Oakland, City of Light, City of Magic.

I am not disagreeing about crime at that location; however, the large majority of incidents were car break-ins, which can be mitigated by hiring armed security. If there were hotels on either side of the location in Oakland, it wouldn’t have closed. The other chain fast food places on the lot are still open and have had very few car break-ins this year.

Whats his social media handle? I'd like to ruin that for him. These fucktards post from prison on smuggled phones all the time.

Interesting. Oakland* had their Jason Williams-like DA controversy but with a successful recall, the new DA is a former prosecutor.

California knows how to party.

Love me some Oakland stories.  Mine isn't so bad.  Just the guy sitting in front of me on the BART on the way to the '16 Cal game pissed on the floor.  Should have taken that as an omen and headed back home.

A few years ago we were heading to the Coliseum to see the Astros in town. Stopped at West Oakland Station and a very sketchy Richard Ramirez doppleganger walked on and tried to open the back door of the train. Old guy next to him noped the fuck out and I realized he had a gun tucked in his pants. Grabbed my very pregnant wife and made it off just before the doors closed.

One of my regular bartenders likes to say that he doesn’t know how he is going to die, but he does know it will be on BART.

Had a laugh with my barber earlier telling him about my old fart internet friend who screamed at some kid that he has a lighter and wants them both to die.

Turns out the guy was almost 30.   In my defense, I only had the ski mask eye holes view to determine his age.

I prefer “vieux schnock”.  Sounds more like a droll comment from some beret wearing sophisticate smoking unfiltered hand rolled cigarettes…. who likes drawing cartoons of possums.

A few weeks ago, I attended a soccer match between Mexico and The Dominican Republic at SoFi stadium in Inglewood.  Parked at a restaurant at 104th and Prairie; my daughter and I (no pics) walked to the game.

I am no expert of LA, but we were two of about 10 anglos in that area at the time - including the match.  I was not fearful, but perhaps I am a dumbass.  That said, most of the folks were occupied picketing against Trump and screaming at him while lighting off  some pretty awesome fireworks.

I guess this was my "did not get mugged" story.
