I'm too lazy to look up past iterations to determine timing, but when can we expect the tOSU mudhole post?

I wouldn’t expect it. I haven’t really thought about one for this game. Maybe Georgia or Florida if the general mood is interesting for one.

Was trying to find out how many Ewers had by himself and AI said 20 in the 2024 season. No way that's correct, right? Feels like he was in double digits though, but I couldn't find the right number.

Arch Manning.

I don't think he's gonna go bambam Sam on people, but I do think that he's going to use his legs A LOT to open up the game.

In reality, its game one with a lot of new players and a bunch of stuff changing. I think its going to be awesome, but teams don't even have their identity game one with the kind of veteran turnover both of these teams have had. Brand new identities need to be forged and this will make a lasting impression on who these teams eventually become.

I hope it's a one sided ass kicking where Texas runs Ohio State out of their own stadium, just like Michigan.

I agree. Texas by 14+

Practice Nuggets from Saturday Evening

Wanted to follow up from my late night post regarding the Texas defense and its performance Saturday. I posted, the first text I received regarding the Longhorns' defensive performance had my source enamored by the forecast of the defense in 2025.

For those that missed it, this was the text:

“The defense is going to be unbelievable.”

But to more notes.

***

If you have not read @Bobby Burton post from this morning, be sure to check it out. There are great tidbits regarding the Longhorns' third practice in there.

***

Starting with the defense.

I mentioned coming into camp I expect the defense to be the superior side of the football early in fall camp, and so far that has held firm. This is not to create concern regarding the offense, the unit just needs time to gel across the board. New faces and pieces coming in and out of the starting unit who have yet to see extended snaps with one another is just part of the growing process.

But for now, in large part due to creating turnovers, the defense is winning the 11-on-11 battles pretty handedly.

***

The pads come on this week, and based off a couple of recurring conversations, this week is going to be huge for the offensive line picture. I don't believe the unit generated as push displacement as hoped in the spring and so far it remains a work in progress. To be blunt, this is my largest concern at the moment regarding the 2025 team.

The experience difference in the trenches is where the differential lies currently.

Cole Hutson has seen most of the snaps at right guard with Connor Robertson filling in at center as DJ Campbell remains limited. Originally I had heard Campbell may miss time, but that does not appear to be the case as reported by others here at OTF.

***

CB Warren Roberson has really come along. Roberson had two interceptions on Saturday, with one mentioned as the most athletic play of the day.

LB Liona Lefau has been mentioned as uber consistent in his play both in run and pass support.

Freshman TE Emaree Winston had a remarkable leaping reception on a corner route which was heavily contested by Jordon Johnson-Rubell during 1-on-1's.

Some positive returns on Derek Williams Jr. as well. I have heard he's been ramping up his intensity each day physically. Conditioning is a large key of his full return and those steps are being taken.

***

Wide receiver position is working on who else can join the group of four – Wingo, Moore, Livingstone, Mosley.

Again, I am going to sound like a broken record, but Parker Livingstone remains a name that is popping up in these settings.

***

Texas has incorporated more under center snaps for Arch Manning than what we were previously accustomed to with Quinn Ewers.

My expectation is to see a lot of play action involving Arch's back fully turned to the defense at times this fall. RPO's will remain a piece of the puzzle for the Longhorn offense, but true boot legs, waggles and seven-step drops out of a play action set are expected to increase compared to 2024.

For those wondering, I have been told Manning has done a fine job of protecting the football, despite the Texas defense creating a number of turnovers (specifically interceptions) early on in camp.

This.  It’s two storied programs who just played last year, both top 3 teams and national champ contenders. Defending champ and 2x semifinalist Texas. And a Manning at the helm

Of course it’s being hyped as much as the last 2 non-conference matchups between Texas and Ohio State

I noticed in that picture the Texas football account posted on social media last night that whoever was at QB was under center.

I recall us doing a little of it last year in the two games Manning started and we had some chunk runs (obviously the competition level wasn’t great). Also remember a redzone TD throw to Blue that came from an under center play.

Starting to see more 2024 red zone/3rd qtr offensive struggles discussions popping up again.

Honestly think better OL power blocking along with Arch at QB will significantly improve our short yardage offense in 2025.

There is nothing wrong with the "best season opener ever" promo from Fox. Defending National Champions vs. the team they beat in the semi-final featuring the most hyped college QB in a decade or more fits that description. Great teams typically lose a ton of players to the NFL, so the finding their "identity" knock is dumb. Two clear blue blood programs ranked in the preseason top 5 to kick off Week 1 at 11am.

The excitement level nationally is legit and the TV ratings will be through the roof. It is the best season opener ever. We've been waiting two decades for this shit, some of y'all need to embrace the arrogance and attention again.

Embrace it? I never let it go. I always felt that's a part of what made us unique. We're arrogant regardless of on field results.

I just wish it was going to be a prime time game. Oh wait. No I don't. I don't care. I'm happy the Ohio State meth tweakers are so upset about it. I hope we hear more about it after we soundly beat them the same way we did to Alabama in Tuscaloosa and Michigan in Ann Arbor. Let's bring the spirit of 2005 back and win again in the Horseshoe.

This benefits the run game by making it much more varied, and as mentioned, also helps the playaction game

It’s a bit tougher on the QB. Lot of back to the defense, turn, and make a quick read. The best part is I may not have to watch a 3rd and 2 out of the shotgun this season

Some practice notes from Suchomel on OB

Spoiler

Texas held a practice on Saturday night and we were able to gather some notes. Some highlights …

- As we mentioned last night, Ryan Wingo was suited out but not taking part in drills. I never did get an answer on D.J. Campbell.

- I’m told Arch Manning hit a couple of deep balls to Emmett Mosley and DeAndre Moore.

- Ant Hill was “all over the field” making plays.

- Once again, Jack Bouwmeester’s name was mentioned. Sounds like Texas may have a real weapon in the transfer punter.

- The team’s still not in full pads so it wasn’t a super-physical practice … more thud than full contact.

- C.J. Baxter looked good, I’m told. He had a couple of solid runs and seems to be running with confidence when in traffic.

- Tre Wisner didn’t get a ton of work. Speculation by me here, but I’m sure they want to keep him fresh/healthy at all costs. When he did have his number called, he showed really good speed and quickness on a couple of plays.

- James Simon had several carries and ran really hard. Jerrick Gibson and Christian Clark had some good moments as well.

- Santana Wilson, Jaylon Guilbeau, Manny Muhammaded and Caleb Chester were among the defensive players that I’m told made plays on the ball (PBUs). “Taaffe was Taaffe,” I’m told, much to the delight of Duane Akina.

- On the QBs, I’m told Arch looked “solid” and moved the offense down the field in situational sessions of the practice. When the receivers were covered, he did get upfield with his legs and did a good job of avoiding contact and getting out of bounds.

- K.J. Lacey apparently had some nice throws where he changed his arm angle under pressure and hit some WRs on crossing routes. Sounds like those plays really fired up the offensive guys.

- Overall I’m told there weren’t a ton of deep balls thrown, as most of the work was on underneath stuff (by design).

- Of the WRs, Emmett Mosley, DeAndre Moore and Parker Livingstone were singled out as guys who made good grabs and picked up yards after the catch. The running backs were also heavily involved as receivers out of the backfield.

We potentially win the conference last year with a good punter.

It isn’t sexy but with how good we think our defense is going to be, it matters.

Our red zone issues were both QB and OL related last season, IMO. We couldn't get push in short yardage situations and while the threat of the QB running helps, it doesn't always make the difference. The biggest  is the OL which doesn't really get answered until Aug. 30. Flood has his work cut out for him.

Having said that, I think Arch helps our red zone woes with his arm as much as the run threat he poses. When the field gets compressed, his quick release and zip are more likely to circumvent the need to punch it in from inside the five.

Meh, he’s a RS-FR.  Him displacing McDonald, Guilbeau and/or Taaffe would be greatly distressing imo.  I expect a few of these younger guys to get more time this year.

SC’s favorite go-to shirt is a burnt orange mesh. Think of Scott Glenn’s character from Urban Cowboy. I think he was wearing a classic mesh while he was beating the shit out of Sissy. That plus cargo shorts and his Hey Dudes and he’s a joy to be seen around.
