2025 game Week 1, #1 Texas @ #3 Ohio State - What the Fuck is a Buckeye?

I really don't even think that this game is going to be close. I'm not trying to tank viewership for it, said Finebaum. "It's a big event, one of the biggest games we have seen, but I think Texas' roster is better, and I think Ohio State is going to be hungover from last year with a new quarterback. And by the way, two new coordinators as well."

Can't believe I'm mostly agreeing with Finebaum. When I look at this on paper, it seems a bit lopsided. Brand new small, skinny, relatively immobile QB for OSU. OL that's questionable in quality. DL that lost everyone and is questionable in quality. OSU loaded up on NIL to have the deepest roster in the country in '24 for a title run. They didn't repeat that this off-season. They didn't go get the experienced QB. They didn't load up on DL even though they lost everyone. They hired a DC who was a Belichick puppet and has sucked everywhere else he's been except under Belichick.

We've leveled up. Better QB. Better RB room. Possibly better TE room. Massive DL influx of talent that's mostly performed on this level before.

This should be a Texas 33 OSU 13 type of game. I keep wondering what I'm missing, but this really seems like OSU got their title and is accepting a rebuilding season at QB and in the trenches.

No.  They have recruited too well for that and have a shitload of talent.

They’re not gonna lose by 20 points at home. We are not Michigan

But I could see this looking like the 2023 Bama game

Well. I think I am now going to this game.  Anyone selling a single ticket?  If you are going, where are you sitting?  I will likely end up buying a solo ticket but trying to do my best to avoid an asskicking.  Where is the allotted section for longhorn visitors?

Thank you.

Since you posted this a couple of hours ago without a response, and in case you haven’t found it yet, there’s a good bit of discussion in this thread:

That’s delusional. Those fuckers will field a real team.

I expect it to be closer. Just on paper they didn't do nearly as much to replace what they lost while Sark went all out to replace what we lost.

The difference at QB should be worth 10 pts. Then the difference in defense should be at least another 7. With that DL and DC OSU doesn't look like a top ranked level defense on paper. We look like a top 3 defense again.

Everyone thought the Michigan game was going to be like they're expecting this one to be. But Michigan had too much turnover on staff, didn't go out to replace what they lost at QB, didn't go out to replace what they lost on defense. A lot like this OSU team. If Sayin isn't ready for big time ball, and I don't see any way he could be, they're going to suffer.

Here are OSU's results under Day:

Screenshot_20250827_190657_Chrome.thumb.jpg.66d9df7fc8e555a67c424974d42b7b94.jpg

2 loss maximum since 2018.

Its perfectly fine to talk group by group returns and specific advantages.

OSU fielding a very good team. They are nearly a CFP lock and if they had a returning QB starter they might be favored over Texas to win the championship.

Texas isn't blowing them out.

OSU had a 22.8 point average margin of victory last year and 11 point average in the playoffs.

If I'm wrong, and Texas beats by OSU by more than 10 point I'll pop in here and devour the most delicious crow I've ever eaten Saturday early evening.

Wingo goes for 120. CJ Baxter gets an "unspectacular" 6-7 ypc. Arch runs for 50 and three first downs. Sayin never gets comfortable and frankly may get injured. We bracket Jeremiah just like last year and he gets one reception just like before. Horns win a lot to a little.

What size LHB contingent is going to be in the infamous horseshoe? It can make a difference.  Texas played at Auburn back in the early 80s.  A guy I worked with was a Nam vet who was a glassy eyed Aubie with season tickets.  He was at the game, which I think was game 1 out of the gate that year.  He said the LHB started unloading about an hour and a half before kickoff and slowly filing in to a drum cadence with cowbells like WE. ARE. TEX.  AAS.  YOU.  REDNECKS.  ARE.  TOAST! Then when the LHB all got in the stands, they led off with The Eyes, at which the Auburn multitude of goobers were just sitting there with mouths hanging open.  The famous psychopathic “voodoo” Auburn fan base was whipped down before kickoff.  Don’t tecall the score but my buddy was thoroughly demoralized and disappointed at how Texas dominated all game.  And he was a captain on the Tuscaloosa PD and a .50 cal helicopter gunnner in Nam.  Insufferable Aubie though, sheesh.

20-7. Auburn didn’t cross midfield until the game was well over.

In broad strokes I can agree with some of you takes. Michigan is a very bad comparison imo. We could head down that rabbit hole but I don't think it's valuable.

I think you did hit on the key of victory.

Arch over Sayin

Texas D over OSU D

I really like College Football Nerds and imo they do a really good job of breaking down the Texas vs OSU game. One of the best I've seen.

They do make an extremely interesting point about Sayin. His motion is very similar to Ewers (he doesn't say that directly) but listen and I think you'll agree. Also, his height has not been measured. I didn't know that fact.

They aren't the most exciting guys to listen to, but the quality of their discussion more than makes up for it, imo.

Ohio State's continued success at a high level year after year for decades is just...infuriating. I don't know how they do it.

Of course, they routinely schedule 3 OOC G5 games to go along with a conference that on paper has no depth after 5 teams, that is only recently with the additions of the 4 Pac teams.

They have played 2 OOC P4 conference games at home since Day took over and are 1-1 in those games. Oregon beat them 35-28, and ND lost 21-10. That Oregon team was coached by Mario Cristobal. Those two teams lost a combined 8 games those two seasons. So decent competition, but not elite.

Since, Sarkisian has been at Texas, they have played at least 1 P4 team OOC every year.

Arkansas, Alabama x 2, and Michigan. 2-1 on the road. Day has never gone on the road OOC and beaten a playoff team like Sarkisian has.

We won't smoke them like we did Michigan last year, unless we force Sayin into multiple early TOs. If anyone is getting smoked in this game, it is the team starting a RSFreshmen, with a questionable OL plus OC combination with a new DC that has never coached a day of college football at this level.

Watched that yesterday.  Low arm angle, just like ewers, plus our front 7 could equal some tipped passes like we are used to seeing against us.

I thought it was okay. Definitely had some good points. I get why, but there is some B1G Homer in that interview. It's not bad, but definitely there in a few spots.

Yeah side motion AND possibly under 6'.

I called 2 turnovers for Sayin/OSU prior to hearing about that aspect. It only made me more confident about that call.

If someone told me after the game was play it was more than a 14 point margin of victory, I'd be very certain it was Texas. I don't think it will be lopsided, but if so, I'd be confident it was Texas. In fairness, while I'm pretty confident Texas wins, I'm smart enough to know it sure as shit ain't a given.

Many doormats in their conference like the bugeaters (nebraska) sure helps pad those stats and give their players many scrimmage-like rest games, doesn't it?

Yeah, Michigan game is not a good comparison because they had no QB. Their starter was lost and the replacement was not much better, and by that time the game was over. It was like us with Card at Arkansas.

Crowd noise could affect a new OL playing together for the first time - particularly one with a new C. A few false start penalties won't surprise me, and are the home crowd's reward for a job well done.

Crowd noise won't affect a competent QB. They're already used to playing silently with signals. Get the play call over the headset or from the sidelines, identify your key reads on defense (using motion to tip coverages if applicable), signal your hot reads, the snap on a count. Verify your read was correct (otherwise adjust) and let the ball rip on time and on target.

The longer a play goes on, the more the chance of an open receiver approaches 100%. Texas ruined the reputation of some stellar DBs when the DL couldn't ever get to the QB. I do not expect that to be a problem this season. Our DBs will be told to stay in the hip pocket of the receiver until the QB is on the ground. It shouldn't be a long wait.

Now swagger is unmatched. Gawd help us if the swagger is unleashed.

Given our road schedule this year I’d be pretty surprised if a lot of our OL and offensive coaching hasn’t been focused on mitigating crowd noise.  Then again I’ve been surprised before.  Expect a few false starts but hopefully nothing critical.

Have you seen any videos with a breakdown of what to expect from a Patricia defense?

Not really. It’s all guessing. Patricia hasn’t coached in college since he was a GA at Syracuse in 2003.

Wadlington has been saying we need to watch Steve Belichick stuff from last year at Washington but that could also be a total waste of time if the rest of the Ohio State defensive staff forces Patricia to run stuff they are familiar with like they tried to do with Knowles last year. Knowles finally won the battle but it apparently caused a lot of staff friction.

Very true because of the pull that Larry Johnson has on defense and how it's called.

Michigan is not a good comp, but that Arkansas game isn’t either.

Michigans WRs are a 1 as group compared to a 10 for OSU.  You swap WRs and that’s bigger than swapping QBs.

Random important update from tonight.  My 6-year-old and I were just preparing for football season - hanging the Block-O flag on the house, testing out the OSU cheerleader outfit for Spirit Day Friday, etc.  She asked when we were going to make the traditional candy Buckeyes to give out to friends, so I told her we do that at the end of the season, you know, before we play Michigan.  She looks at me with a worried side-eye, pauses, then says "if Michigan wins I'll get you two beers and a wine."

Kids are so cute.

OSU has remained good for a long time due to a lot of fortunate events. They got Meyer who is not only an excellent coach, he’s a top tier cheater. That laid the foundation.

Day has been riding that for a long time, combined with the weak schedules over the years that are top heavy. Michigan was down for a long time. Penn St was down and coached now by a guy who can’t beat a good coach.  They’ve recruited well under NIL because they have strong financial support.

The biggest surprise for me is that I thought Day was an above average coach, and yet he’s been able to pull out some big wins. Not sure how. Something just doesn’t add up.

They’ve had something like 11 losing season in 135 years. Their performance far outstrips any of our lifetimes, much less Meyer’s tenure there.

OSU going to be in VERY deep trouble if they are down more than 1 score at any point in the 3rd/4th quarter and we have run game going

Hard to see Sayin having success in “must throw” passing situations with our ability to get to the QB rushing four

IMO this is going to be the formula this year… Aggressive early to get a lead. Pound the rock + play action. Defense doesn’t allow the opposing offense to play from behind with waves of pass rush
