I'm getting sick of Josh Pate. It's not his takes, its his style. It's not his takes that I find bad. He seems to be right/wrong about as much as the next media schlub, which is to say about 50/50.

No, it's him, personally. He's so full of himself, so arrogant. Perhaps YouTube success has gone to his head. I just watched a part of his Ohio State-Texas prediction show and he just really rubs me the wrong way.

I won't be watching his shit anymore.

I know, I know ... "Dear Facebook" and all that.  I just had to get it off my chest.  I feel better. Thank you.

I like his gambling stuff

I listen to his oped CFB news takes on 2xs speed though because he requires 10 minutes to get a 1 minute point across, which gets old fast on a one-man show

Also he visited A&M a few offseason ago and got VIP treatment, and he’s treated them with kid’s gloves ever since

I have a love/hate thing with him.  Currently,  he's whoring himself to every pod around. Not sure if it is marketing or he's paid for it.  He's now too close. Too many contacts in media and blindly believes everything they say.  Probably has to fence sit on every team or just flat out say he likes them in order to not lose access. And boy does he love that access. On the flip side, I think he has good 30,000 foot takes on the sport and genuinely cares about it. It's the team level that he fails. Pate goes to a practice. Comes back and that team is now a contender because he knows because he was there.

I saw a youtube short of him on a private plane going to Penn St. The clip was all about him. Maybe that's the point but he's getting pretty high on his own supply.

None of my friends listen to him so I don't have anyone to complain to so here I am.

Doesn’t bother me. But I don’t really listen to any national media on college football because I have found most to be worthless know-nothings.  So I’ve got no idea what he says.

His style and his attitude have definitely changed over the years imo

Josh Pate to me is at the extreme opposite end of the spectrum to people like Cowherd and Bayless. Those kind of guys will have extreme & ridiculous opinions (that no sane person could possibly believe) just to stir the pot. Pate hedges in every direction and seems afraid to take a really hard stand on the fortunes of any team. Pate is always optimistic about the season-long outlook for programs like aggie, but hedges just enough to cover any potential outcome.

he definitely has an extremely high opinion of himself, but i think that's been the case ever since I started watching him (2023 season) - it's just been turned up a notch (or 12) lately.  and yeah, he's definitely whoring himself out to whoever will have him this year it seems.  (he also seems to lean in a direction politically that i fucking despise).  and his affinity for aggy is annoying.

that said, if you only pay attention to him on his Youtube show and nowhere else, i absolutely agree with this take:

On the flip side, I think he has good 30,000 foot takes on the sport and genuinely cares about it.

i think he does a good a job as anyone else as providing big picture analysis on a national level from a week to week basis.

I like his podcast. I get how he would come across as arrogant but, to me, it comes across as tongue in cheek. If I didn't feel like he was being sarcastic, it would be annoying.

I just appreciate that he just doesn't constantly rage bait like so many in the field.

I'm pretty sure he's paid by TexAgs to come on their show on a regular basis.

He had a great interview with Steve Sarkisian from 3 months ago. It's definitely worth a listen.

I can't stand him usually, though. If I get very desperate for more college football talk I'll click on him. There's so much content out there, that usually doesn't happen, but every now and then.

His takes on Texas during SEC media days were absurd. It was all about what happens if Texas has a bad season this year. How bad will the wheels come off in Austin? It sounded like Aggie propaganda to me.

The biggest complaint I tend to see about him is he treats coaches with kid gloves on his show and he glazes any program who gives him the slightest bit of access

He does hedge a loT. I always think of him as:

Why does anyone listen to any of these type of guys? We all know the best information about college football comes from shut ins, nurses, criminals, and lawyers who post on this board.

I don't know why some of you are such pussies about random guys speculating on things that are certainly possible (if unlikely). You know damn well if Texas has a bad season this year that fans are going to run around like chickens with their heads cut off here and everywhere. That's just what happens when expectations are sky high. He's just stating the obvious.

I don't really listen to any CFB talking heads but I'd rather listen to this guy than someone like Paul Finebaum or some shit.

He’s a toned down Herbstreit.  Constantly fellating the coaches and administrators who provide him access while criticizing the unreasonable fans who question their genius.  There are many worse media personalities in the college football community.

Even when I agree with what he’s saying or find it insightful, his long winded delivery is a tough listen for me. It probably comes with having to fill time on a solo show that he built from the ground up, but I do a lot of x2 speed and 30 second skips until he talks about the big games of the week

There are only two sports podcasts that I speed up (because I’ll typically just stop listening instead), and the other is simply because every pod is 2-2.5 hours long (Sam Vecenie’s) instead of being annoying

When I used to work in media I met him a couple of times. Was by himself one time, with Mushmouth the second. Massive prick in person both times, snarky and condescending, second time just sat there texting on his phone the whole time ignoring everyone. Mushmouth, on the other hand, was a perfect gentleman.

e: Sorry, by him, I mean Herbie if that isn't clear. Pate was after my time.

I don't listen to Finebaum, either.

The worst Texas is going to go this year is 9-3. He was talking about a meltdown type of season. It was an obvious anti hype take, which...fine. But compared to his takes for teams like OU and A&M, both of whom he hyped up that don't have nearly the talent advantage, it sounded absurd. It felt like a take made for clicks, which is certainly part of the business model, but not something I get excited about.

There are certain talking heads who enjoy throwing out anti Texas takes. Tim Brando is a big one. Josh Pate seems to be another. There are other guys who seem to go out of their way to give Texas the benefit of the doubt. Joel Klatt has always seemed to be that way to me. I'd put Greg McElvoy in that category as well, lately.

There are a lot of more neutral guys out there - the amount of content on social media regarding college football is pretty much endless. I tend not to gravitate towards people who seem to enjoy taking shots at Texas. If that makes me a raging pussy, I don't mind being called that. To me it would be masochistic and self hating to go seeking that kind of content.

Pate picked Texas against Georgia both games last year (and bet on them both games), picked us to be the #3 team in the CFP bracket this year, and picked us to beat Ohio State last night.  I don't think he's anti-Texas.

So I just watched this:

Quote

And yes, he does pick Texas, but he ends it with that weird segment about Texas losing to Washington, Georgia 2x, and Ryan Day.

Never mind he beat Saban in Tuscaloosa by double digits. Beat Michigan in Ann Arbor. Beat Dabo Swinney. None of those count according to Pate.

Every coach at every level - every great player, too - has this onus on them that until they win a championship they haven't won a championship, yet. That's not about Texas, and it's not about Sarkisian. Ryan Day was hearing it prior to last year. And if Texas falls short this year - which they very well might - we'll hear some version of that refrain all offseason. Shoot, BurntOrange&White will make a few dozen posts on it on this board all by himself. This is a reflection of it.

Sarkisian has Texas in a place where they should be a part of the conversation every year right now. You have to have a few breaks go your way to win it all, but before that you have to be in the conversation. As long as Sarkisian is the head coach and locked into his job, I feel confident Texas is going to be right there. So we just have to be patient as fans until our number comes up. I'm excited as a fan to be able to watch the journey.

Pate's comments are chum in the water for the anti Texas folks out there. He's feeding his audience what they want to hear even while he picks Texas to win. He wants it both ways.

I feel quite confident Texas gets the benefit of the doubt. When we were down, both in 1984-97 and 2010-2022, members of the media in general practically openly rooted for us to be relevant again.

Nonetheless, some media people enjoy feeling like they're puncturing the balloon more than others, Kirk Bohls style. My perception is that when it comes to Texas, Josh Pate is one of those.

When my older daughter played softball in 2nd grade, some of the parents told me the West Austin Youth Association was biased against our team.

Pate is the guy that listens to the spin coming out of each program and regurgitates it. So he provides a 50K view of how each program sees itself. As an example he can" t stop talking about how Sark told him this is the year. Since aggy's spin comes from Billy I can"t see why anyone would be surprised by his take on aggy.

I didn't really know who Pate was until last summer, and really enjoyed listening to him last season.

But my biggest issue with his show (and other similar commentators on YouTube) is how much time is spent qualifying his opinions due to reply guys. I get that you should interact with your community and it boosts engagement, but every goddamn show is "Now, don't get mad at me for the model's rankings..." or "I know you ____ fans will hate what I'm about to say...".  In the end, he just tries to ride that line so everyone likes him.

It sucks that reply guys carry so much weight and take up so much oxygen. Just talk football. I can't do it anymore.

He’s a damn good business man and/or has a terrific agent . He hasn’t tied himself down with an exclusive deal. His YouTube channel is partnered with On3, and he has a contract to appear on ESPN’s Get Up. He’s also free to make weekly appearances on TexAgs.

He achieved all this on the backs of aggy clicks. Why watch SECN shows picking aggy 9th in the SEC when they can watch Pate pontificate CFP hope? His aggy clickbait bullshit is painfully obvious to everyone except his target audience.

The guy is a hack and an aggy shill. Sark and the Texas SID should have told him to fuck off.

Due to the nature of their business model, Bobby and Gerry 1000% have to be on everyday pushing content. Pate on the other hand is backed by a HUGE company and there is no need for him to have daily takes.

Either I've not noticed it before (entirely likely), or we have a new version of intensive porpoises for posterity. For the unaware, the kids are young goats, the gloves made from their skin are used for handling things carefully.

Finebaum has decent takes, for the most part, and like Josh Pate, he's an old radio guy. Like Pate, he has some good stuff and some really horrible bullshit in his schtick. If I do stumble into his show, the "call-in" segment is a sign to dump that shit in a hurry.

One of the elements of Pate's shows is that he's mostly pretty open about the possibilities of being wrong... as he says "I only want the credit, none of the blame."
