I've flown San Diego to Monterey a couple of times since the shutdown without issues, even the TSA workers seemed fine.  But I am seriously concerned about the news reports I've seen about the major hubs.  I will update tomorrow since I'm flying via Denver to Austin.

This week is the first week of major disruption.

hmm. both our SWA flights DIA-MDW last week were at 50% capacity...i wonder if people are just not traveling much rn? costs, shutdown, holidays looming, having to cut corners, fear, etc... 🤔

DFW was easy for a 6am flight. No pre check (I’m cheap) and it was < 2 minutes.

Flew into George Bush (IAH) just now and it was a zoo. Line for the TSA security snaked and went all the way back to 114 where you go to get an uber. YMMV, but I have a fair amount of business travel this month, between IAH, SFO & LGA and am now a bit worried.

6am out of AUS this morning and it was the fastest I've made it to the gate in recent memory. No issues. But 6am isn't really peak departure time here.....

At IAH now, 7:30am flight down to the Valley, checked bag at C, only Clear line available and was backed out through the door.

Took the subway tram over to A, they only have Clear and non-TSA pre-check. Made it through in about 15 minutes, then hopped on the sky tram to get to B. Took about 30 minutes in total.

My understanding now that if you have TSA pre-check, the only option is through E.

I’m ok if we leave the govt shut down for weeks or months more. So many want to talk about how we don’t need federal govt services, let’s find out. See if anyone changes their mind about govt.

Ok, you can take the B or the F and switch for the N at Broadway Lafayette, or you can go over the bridge to DeKalb and catch the Q to Atlantic Avenue, then switch to the IRT 2, 3, 4 or 5, but don't get on the G. See that's very tempting, but you wind up on Smith and 9th street, then you got to get on the R.

I’m reading about reports of 3 hours. Maybe that is only at certain times or they’re scaring everyone to get to the airport early.

NEWS showed the same thing.  Guy claimed he was in line for 3 hours at 6:40 AM.

I’m flying out of IAH tonight for DFW during rush hour. I either need to a) get CLEAR ahead of time because I don’t see how pre check helps if I’m terminal A and the only pre check terminal is E or b) rent a car and drive.

You can sign up for Clear+ ahead of time easy peasy lemon squeezy online, took me 5 minutes, it's $209/year and now I feel better about airports. YMMV.

I always drive to Houston to dfw. I've had to spend the night in the dfw airport a couple times for a 4 hour drive...

Or just go through regular security somewhere like B

Multiple friends in Houston are reported that they’re bailing on flights at IAH. Hours just to get inside, then a shitshow once you do. Some folks gave up and went home, others are just cancelling trips.

Same.  I live on the NE side of the Metroplex and go to Houston a few timesmonthly. I'm 45m- an hour away from Love, DFW is farther.  I would much rather be on my own schedule and not deal with the traveling public and drive.  It's much less stressful and I prefer driving to flying.  The only negative is it's given me a deep dislike of semis. Left lane blocking cocksuckers piss me off.

Sigh. If this goes through Xmas…and it may…I’m considering getting the kids back here to Toronto or CDMX, and then ground transport from there. Which is a shitty option, but we’ll see.

What? Monterrey is like 2 hours from the border why the hell would they go to cdmx?

Theres also tons of busses that go from mty to sat, aus, dal, hou whatever.

Does this get you into the airspace controlled by the happy, not overworked controllers?

It never fails...

I drive to Houston from DFW and back and I think, "this sucks, I should have flown" and then I fly to Houston from DFW and I think "this sucks, I should have driven".

It's Schroedinger's commute-- every option sucks.

I read this morning that flights are being cancelled and traffic is being scaled back to accomodate ATC's not being overworked. Not sure there is anything to be done by guys like you and me to enable their happiness though. I did see there is a threat of firing ATC's who call in sick, but not sure how that is going to help us.

Well, I was figuring there are directs from FRA and LHR to CDMX.  But yeah, even a connection from there to Monterrey gets em pretty close.  The other challenge is finding flights that don't transit through the US.

That's right.  Need to look at travel that takes us to and from more stable, functional countries.  Like Mexico.

We are rapidly becoming a fascist failed state.

Yes.  If there's one thing that will fix our long-term ATC shortage, that would be.....firing ATCs.

Failed.  State.

I don’t think that answers my question.  A grocery store participates in snap, does the equal treatment for customer rule apply to all customers and all prices, or just snap (or whichever federal program)?

The government is abusing federal law and the Constitution left and right but as someone pointed out, cruelty is the point so they put out this reminder that in theory is meant to stop "regular" customers from paying higher prices to support SNAP customers.

Gracias.  That may be the plan.  Looks like they can get transit to Nuevo Laredo, but we'll have to cross and pick them up.  And go through understaffed US border checkpoints.  Sigh.

I flew into IAH last night. Sat on the tarmac for over an hour because they were so behind on getting flights in and out. Missed my connecting flight. The people rescheduling my flight said they've been busy all day rescheduling and then recommended that I stay at the airport because the wait time to get through TSA is SIX HOURS. Walked by the TSA at 11:30 last night and the line was insane, with not a single TSA worker in sight. Still here waiting for my 9am flight. It's been a long night.

Border crossing in bus is easy and prioritized. Pick them up in Laredo

I'm flying SeaTac to a small city in Texas, connecting DEN on the way there and DFW on the way back.  I'm bringing lots of snacks, a bottle to fill with water, dressing in layers, etc..  Calling it an adventure.  (And I've told my wife that I plan on working until I'm 78, in case that comes up in a damages calculation...worst case scenario.)

IAH being a shitshow makes sense.  It's not a fun airport to navigate under normal circumstances.

If this goes through Christmas, I know of one fed who will be quitting after the first of the year.

The end game is to make everything fail, so it collapses, and then the oligarchs pick up the pieces for pennies and run it all.

Destroy society to seize it, lock stock and barrel.

That happened a long time ago. Remember Ronald Reagan? You've seen pictures.

If I saw those lines at the airport, I would turn around and go home. If it was a work trip, I would tell everyone involved that the airport is essentially close and let's schedule a online meeting.

Checking in with friends and today is the first day where it's really starting to fuck with work travel.  We'll see who caves first.
