Going into the year a lot of people had this game circled on the calendar as the most important of the year. The idea being there was a good chance we lose to Ohio State and or Georgia on the road, while beating OU and aggy bc they weren’t supposed to be all that good, so this game was going to be the pivot point on if we made the playoffs or not.
Lots of talk about Florida being good. Oh Noe’s Lagaway is a player- home field and him might be worth a 40 point swing or whatever it was from last year.
I was not worried about them all that much. I think they sort of suck and sun belt Billy couldn’t coach his way out of a paper bag. So, I got that part right.
I also thought our team was going to be awesome. We’ve seen exactly one data point of us looking awesome, against Sam Houston. Defense has been really good to amazing all year. Running backs are meh. The offensive line sort of sucks it looks like, but that probably shouldn’t be a thing that derails a season if Arch can hit pretty simple concepts and not look like a spastic scrub.  So far, he’s been basically the anti Quinn- really strong in the pocket, good awareness, able to run, fine on the deep ball, but… pretty shitty at everything else. Which is weird because he played 2.5 games last year and was really really good.
I thought he started off slow last week (even his completions I didn’t think were in the right place) but by the end of the game he was rolling and dropping dimes and looking like the guy I think we all thought he would be.
If early season games were the yips, he’s worked through them, and what we saw in Q2 and Q3 against Sam are what he’s going to be thankful for the ceiling of this team definitely goes back to national title. What we’ve seen, that I didn’t expect, was a pretty grim floor from the offense.
looking forward to being in Gainesville for the game- who all is going?  (Buy tailgate tickets here)

Hook Em high like an eagle soars. Even with OU next week I don’t think there’s any way this team isn’t completely and totally full of focusness for the gators.

I think as long as Arch has his head on straight, this should be a fairly sound, if at time ugly, Texas win.  I don't see the Florida offense doing much at all if they aren't gifted great field position via turnover or dumbass special teams stuff.  I'm not sure whether or not Shipley is worth a shit as a kicker yet, so maybe we get some data points (one way or the other) in this game.  I'm thinking this will end up somewhere around 24-13 Texas at the end of the game.  Survive and advance to the next one.  With the possible exception of Miami, no one looks truly dominant thus far this year.

If Lagway plays, which I don't think he will, We'll force a few INTs. He's a turnover machine.

Why don't you think he'll play?

Fanduel and Draftkings have Texas -7.5 this morning, and a couple of other sites have -6.5

As long as this defense stays focused and doesn't make the assumption that early-season Lagway is going to show up as opposed to last year's late-season Lagway, we should be fine. Yet, at this point, we have no idea which version of Arch is going to show up, which doesn't allow me as a fan to relax and just look forward to dealing with the OU defense.

It's the #128 scoring offense against the #3 scoring defense.

Florida hasn't come close to 100 yards rushing against the last two ranked opponents, and Texas allows 59 a game.

This is one of about 5 games left on the schedule where a B- Arch performance should still be a two score win.

If we get lagway arch.  Pucker the ass.  If we get the cool hand arch. It’s on

Nah even lagway Arch this defense and team is better overall.  Would be close but like UTEP close.

He could be San Utep or Ohio St arch and they should win easily.

if arch hits most of his passes to open receivers and a respectable number of deep passes while protecting the ball, this is an easy double digit win.  and so is every remaining game on the schedule except maybe georgia.

If nothing else, our denfese will win us this game. Also, let's calm down on the "aggy is good" talk. They beat a shitty Auburn by 6 points, and a downtrodden ND team that lost to Cristobal of all coaches. A literal moron of a HC. Freeman is a good coach, but they still need to figure out their QB situation and see if Carr is actually any good. They beat up Arkansas of all teams. Our D will drag their sacks and taint over their faces.

I do think Arch and Co will roll this Florida team. They're fucking abysmal, and Lagway hates keeping the ball for his own team. He's like my ex-wife and money, they hate it and want to just give it away.

Alma Mater - Longhorns

Tough but I’ve got to go for the team that has the best chance to win it all, again. HOOK EM

Need a real break out game from CJ or Tre

The Gators are terrible, we should win convincingly.

We should win this game convincingly.

However, the chances of us losing this game are much higher than they should be. God forbid UF gets 2 scores up. The team whose QB has a mental breakdown first will lose this game.

Vogel has a pretty good view on UF statistically spoilered below.

Highlights:

-UF can't get to the QB. They're second to last in the nation in sacks this year.

-DJ Lagway threw a fantastic deep ball last year. He's not doing much well this season.

-It's not just that UF can't throw. They can't run the ball either.

Previewing Florida

Saturday marks the opening of SEC play for the Texas Longhorns.

This weekend was a whirlwind of football across the conference and now Texas will be able to join the fun with a trip to The Swamp.

As the week of game prep carries on, I wanted to share some numbers regarding Florida and what can be expected for the 2:30 p.m. kickoff this Saturday.

***

Quarterback Pressure

For a school like Florida, this really surprised me.

But the Gators rank 135th out of 136 teams in division one college football in 2025 with only 3.0 sacks.

It is the 2nd worst mark in the entire country and again, not something I would have expected given the level of talent typically residing in Gainesville.

No Deep Ball

With DJ Lagway, it has been anything but a season of highlights. Lagway sits with 5 touchdown passes and 6 interceptions on the season.

When Lagway stepped onto the scene a year ago, the country became enamored with the deep shots. Lagway was superb throwing the football vertically down the field and it is a large reason for why the expectations were so high for Lagway entering the season.

But again, when looking at the quantity of deep pass attempts, this part of the game has completely vanished from the Florida play book.

Lagway attempts just 5.7% of his passes beyond 20 yards down field. That ranks dead last out of 142 qualifying quarterbacks in 2025.

Only 7 of Lagway's 123 pass attempts have traveled 20 yards down field. Only one was completed.

Jaden Baugh is Still Really Good

The Florida running game has not been very impressive this season.

The Gators currently rank 107th in the country in rushing offense this season with an average of 123.0 yards per game.

In fact, 72.64% of the Gators running back rush yards have come after contact, that ranks 14th out of 16 teams in the SEC. The offensive line has not been able to create running lanes.

Still, Jaden Baugh has created 21 missed tackles forced this season, that ranks 15th in the entire country and 13 players ranked above Baugh have played an extra game. Baugh will be a handful.

Explosive Plays

The Florida offense ranks 119th in the country with only 13 plays of 20+ yards.

The Florida defense ranks 22nd in the country with only 12 plays of 20+ yards allowed.

Third Downs

The Florida offense ranks 123rd in the country on 3rd down conversions, converting 17/55 this season for a 30.9% rate.

On the flip side, Florida defensively ranks 36th in the country. Allowing just 19/58 third down attempts, for a 32.8% clip.

Take the Points

Since the beginning of 2023, the Texas Longhorns are 26–2 when they score 21 points or more.

  • 16 points scored vs. South Florida
  • 10 points scored vs. LSU
  • 7 points scored vs. Miami

Florida Has a Legit CB1

Cormani McClain has been very good for the Florida Gators in 2025. That should come as no surprise, McClain was a five-star cornerback in the class of 2024 out of Lakeland, Florida.

Through four contests this fall, McClain has been targeted just five times on his 65 pass coverage snaps and has the 9th highest pass coverage grade in the country according to PFF at 82.4.

McClain has allowed just three receptions for 23 yards. Oddly, 28 yards have been after the catch. So that tells me most of those receptions were screen plays.

Sun Belt Billy gets Dallas Wilson back from injury this week, so UF is pumped about that. They also expect 2 other WRs to play in Sturdivant and Mizell. Things don't look as positive on the defensive side of the ball.

Spoiler

Florida's Week 5 bye not only presented the Gators an extended opportunity to improve in practice following the team's 1-3 start to the 2025 season; it also offered several injured players extra time to treat their ailments and focus on recovery before UF returns to the field in Week 6.

"It came at a good time. I do think some of the guys that maybe wouldn't have been available if we played [this past] Saturday, I think we'll get back," Florida head coach Billy Napier said on Monday.

"And then, obviously, we still have some bangs and bruises that are hanging around that will hopefully make progress throughout the week. But, in general, yes, some of those guys that maybe couldn't play Saturday if we played, I do think we anticipate getting those guys back.

Most notably, freshman Florida wide receiver Dallas Wilson returned to practice during the bye after missing the first four games of his rookie season, due to a lower-leg injury suffered during UF's fall training camp in August.

Napier revealed Wilson participated daily, with the team practicing Tuesday through Thursday, and that while his anticipated workload for Florida's upcoming matchup with No. 9 Texas remains to be determined, the freshman "feels really good."

"We'll see as we go throughout the week. But three good days of work last week, and I thought he handled the load well. We'll be getting the report each day in terms of what the numbers look like and where he's at, but he feels really good. So far, so good."

One of Florida's highest-rated signees from the 2025 recruiting class, Wilson quickly emerged as a potential target for Gators quarterback DJ Lagway, or any other passer who takes the field for UF, throughout his first offseason with the program.

Wilson stole the pass-catching show during Florida's Orange and Blue Game this past April, his first performance in front of UF fans at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, with his 10 receptions for 195 yards, respectively setting and tying those program records for the exhibition, to pair with two touchdowns.

"Oh man, just having him out there is going to be just amazing for us," Lagway said of Wilson Monday. "His ability to go deep, his ability to make plays underneath, being able to make miraculous plays with the ball in his hand. It is going to be great to have him back."

Additionally, Napier positively commented on another pair of Gators wide receivers. He suggested redshirt senior J. Michael Sturdivant is on the right track after taking a big hit against Miami in Week 4 that caused him to leave the game in the third quarter with an apparent upper-body injury, and noted redshirt sophomore Aidan Mizell has recovered from a "setback" that prevented him from taking the field against the Hurricanes.

Ahead of the Miami contest, Mizell revealed he was a "little banged up" after he scored a touchdown against LSU in Week 3. He went on to practice but was considered a game-time decision in Week 4 and ultimately did not play.

"Right now, if we were playing today, he'd be playing," Napier said of Mizell.

Sturdivant, an offseason transfer from UCLA, has produced eight catches for 76 yards and one touchdown through his first four games with the Gators this season; Mizell has logged five catches for 59 yards and one touchdown in two appearances.

On the other side of the ball, Napier suggested redshirt sophomore Aaron Gates could return to play after suffering an upper-body injury against Miami, which led him to exit the game.

"We do anticipate potentially getting Aaron back," said Napier. "So, but that's going to be day-to-day depending on kind of how that goes. But I think we got good news on that front and then obviously you'll get an injury report Wednesday night."

Gates has logged seven tackles over four games this season, in a rotation at STAR nickel cornerback with junior Sharif Denson.

Napier did not offer updates on sophomore defensive tackle Michai Boireau and redshirt senior edge rusher George Gumbs Jr., who each missed Week 4 with various injuries, nor did he comment on redshirt sophomore defensive tackle Brendan Bett, who left the contest against Miami with an apparent knee injury.

Florida will release its first of four Southeastern Conference-mandated availability reports on Wednesday ahead of its Saturday matchup with Texas.

I came across a link to Napier's press conference and listened to a bit of it.  Man he does not exude confidence.  Say what you want about Sark's flaws but he is solid in a press conference and that is obvious when you hear some of the other guys.  Biggest takeaway from the chunk I listened to is I definitely expect them to take more deep shots this week.  Seemed like a point of emphasis.
