You older Surly posters probably remember the 1991 Texas at Mississippi State season opener. One of the absolutely most disappointing games I can ever remember.

We were coming off of the Shock the Nation 1990 tour, and despite the 46-3 Cotton Bowl loss, the defense was gonna to be good and Gardere was back at QB.  14 year old me was absolutely convinced that we were gonna run the SWC, get back to the Cotton Bowl and win this time. Texas was back baby.

Instead, we had like 200 yards of offense, looked totally impotent, and those hillbillies celebrated like free Oxy and crystal meth had dropped from the heavens.

I fear that Saturday's game will at times bring bank brutal memories of that day. And so I think I will get drunk Saturday afternoon.

Go Horns.

We mostly agree. I just sadly know the offensive game plan that we saw against OU has been send to the grave and the team we saw against OSU probably isn't coming back.

Our D can win a lot of games, but our ST has not been consistent all year, if better. Remember the false start penalty on the field goal against Kentucky? Pepperridge farm members. If our offense struggles so much against the Florida and Kentucky teams its logical to conclude that based on the very data you provide losing more than 1 of our remaining games is likely.

Sure. I’m game planning out what 9-3 would look like not searing it will happen.

after week 1 I said we’d go 11-1 or 10-2 and be favored in every game but Georgia. I’m sticking with favored in every game (so far that’s right) other than Georgia but that doesn’t mean they are going to play out that way.

Hmm Yeah, I suspect we'll be favored in every game sans Georgia. Certainly if we end up with 9 wins. I'm not sure Georgia isn’t going to lose another game before or after we play them. I have a very high-level of confidence OU drops at least a couple based on my previous willingness to wager.

At the end of the day, I'd love to be in the optimistic boat and hope my pessimistic boat sinks. I'll jump on here and gobble down my crow with pride and happiness should it come to pass.

The Vegas lines care a lot about the models. We are pretty close to them either way. With Holyfield I’d be surprised if they were favored in Austin, but that line might bounce around a bit under a FG either way.

It obviously depends on how both teams play between now and then. aggy could easily lose their next two games.

As for us . . .

Echoing some of the sentiments here and in the media, I think the defense could be in a tricky spot here. They are going back on the road after playing an 80+ snap OT game where they had to essentially win the game on their own. Mississippi State is not that good but Lebby has had success with tempo, QB runs, and quick passing concepts against PK both at OU and MSU. If given the kind of possession advantage that Florida and Kentucky had, they will score some points.

If the offense can't hold up their end of the bargain here, Texas will lose. That's really what it comes down to. The MSU defense isn't anyhting special but it's not the worst in P4 level that Arch and the Texas offense put up numbers on last year. Arch & co. are going to gave to play passable P4 level football to win the game. Not that high of a bar but it's also not a bar they've cleared in the majority of games to date. Who knows what we get Saturday?

You could offer me a private jet ride there, seats in a suite and all the free food/booze I could take and I would still say “no” to going to this game.

Watching that KY game in person was such a fucking beating. I can’t imagine doing that again with addition of 10 million cowbells

I agree. MSU has scored 34, 24, 63, 38, 34, 9 (road loss to A&M), and 21 in their seven games thus far. Texas' offense is going to need to show up. Otherwise, we will absolutely lose this game.

October 21, 2023. Mississippi State beat Arkansas in Fayetteville, 7-3. That was MSU's last SEC win. They've lost 15 SEC games in a row. That will be heralded throughout the CFB media world and on social media when they break the streak two years later, this coming Saturday night.

I hope that isn't the case, but I've been a Texas fan for a long time and that just kind of feels like some Texas football bullshit.

This pretty much me exactly. I was stunned and pissed after that 1991 MSU game, but I'd only been watching games since the loss to Georgia in the Cotton Bowl 7 years earlier and didn't fully understand things just yet.

I was there.   Senior year and about 30-40 guys from different frats made the road trip up.  First time in my life Ive seen so many pine trees, lol.  Being from CA originally and then Dallas, norther LA (we drove up to Dallas the Thursday night before heading east out of Dallas) and MS was another world for me.  Had a dumpy hotel and partied our asses off.  Very friendly bar scene, no issues at all with the locals, they were all very welcoming as we hit as many keg parties as we could before hitting the local bar scene.

As i recall this was the game their ex aggie coach slimey Jackie castrated a bull the night before at midfield.  Tyson King (iirc it was him) blew his knee out on opening kickoff.  Half our traveling party headed for Bourbon st after the game.  We stayed and had a good time.  Found a fellow Hornfan passed out in a ditch near a fraternity party, helped him back to the hotel, oh to be young again.

Went back to ATX the following year as first year out of college kid and sat in nose bleeds as they ran all over us again for a 2 game sweep.  We were so frustrating to watch.  I went to the Cotton Bowl in the shock the nation year and also saw Drunkenmiller have a big 2nd half in the Sugar Bowl (the rod mckelvey game) to beat us.

Agreed. That’s why I said better than 50% chance but not near certainty. If you were going to go 9-3 probably best to lose to Vandy and then finish the year winning at Georgia, Arkansas and aggy, point to the OU win and say- hey yall we best 3 top 10 teams and lost at #1 in preseason. No terrible losses. We need in. And you’d be on a bit of a run then if you did it that way.
We really need Vandy to beat Mizzou in Nashville next week for 9-3 Texas to be a thing.

I look forward to a 9-3 Texas team making the SEC championship, lose that, and make the playoffs as a 4 loss team.

But to do that, yeah, would have to beat UGA and A&M and lose to Vandy.

I think bama finishes 7-1 in conference.

then, in this pipe dream, us, A&M, and UGA finish 6-2 with Texas holding the tiebreaker. Everyone else finishes with 3 or more conference losses.

You could even throw OU in there at also 6-2 and we'd still go.
Again, I don't think this is happening but if it did it would be a virtual certainty.

I know you said “could” but ou is garbage and has the toughest record in the nation the rest of the way (#8, @#17, @#4, #15, #20).

The only certainty I know is that things we think we know at this point will look stupid in 3-4 weeks (such as this talk of Texas finishing 9-3)

at this same point last year, A&M, Vandy, and LSU were a combined 11-0 in SEC play.

(Keep an eye on South Carolina (Bama, @Ole Miss, @A&M) and Auburn (@Vandy, @Bama) to play a big hand in who makes the SEC championship)

I find myself watching other teams during the week with three things making me regularly envious:

1) teams in the red zone not running slowly developing dogshit runs up the middle.

2) offensive lines that can actually move an LOS on a running play.

3) QBs hitting wide open WRs roughly 5-15 yards down the field.

The last one probably makes me the most ragey. Texas hasn't had a competent RZ approach in years and good OLs in the running game might as well be a myth at this point. But having a QB who cannot hit the broadside of a barn? That's new bullshit.

I thought he played really well last year. I was utterly stunned when he was so bad against OSU and figured it was some bizarre one off. After SJSU you ripped me for the negative tone of my post, but I lost all confidence in him until he proves me wrong. Then UTEP happened and I was like- this fucker has the yips. What the actual fuck.
I can’t believe there isn’t still a badass QB in there. But he’s got his head up his ass AND Sark is doing him no favors. Really fucking weird man.

You're just going to relive that 60-40 cougar-high debacle forever, aren't you?

Kelley threw for 233 yards with a TD pass in that game, too.

You don't have to tell me about it-- I was in the dome for that, myself, in the end zone where cougar high liked to put the Texas allotment.

That was the unreported first time Bevo got loose and charged a cougar high player that taunted/provoked him as he jogged past during pre-game warmups.

Run the fucking ball. Two of the last 3 games..

Florida - 52 yards

Kentucky - 47 yards

Whatever the OL did at OU.... do that.

Is Baxter back next week? Not that he is like the almighty savior; just curious.

Funny how we remember specific games so well many years later.  We had just gotten on a bit of a run that season, upsetting a good Arkansas team in Little Rock on the last second Tony Jones TD, and beating Tech at home. U of H was not a good team and hadn’t been for a while, but were breaking in the run and shoot under Jack Pardee. I had gone to Padre with a bunch of buddies for the weekend and had been drinking at Blanca White’s in Matamoros, and when we got back to the American side we turned the game on the radio and listened to that game in anger and outrage in the parking lot of the border crossing station. I just remember kicking a bunch of cars, I was so pissed. Start of a miserable three year experience with those fuckers until redemption night in 1990.

I think we're going to play Vanderbilt a lot better than some expect.  NOT having to travel 1000+ miles, as the team did against tOSU, Florida, and Kentucky, is going to make a difference.

Pre-season everyone talked about the massive amount of travel this team would face and sort of shrugged it off.  That was silly.  It absolutely makes a difference.
