John Candy- 25Years Ago 3/4

Too many great movies to narrow down.  What a talent.

My favorite story about him is that he's shooting a movie with the great Maureen O'Hara (Only The Lonely).

He finds out she doesn't have her own dressing room and she's getting ready in a glorified closet.  She say's oh its fine. Its no big deal.  He tells whoever is in charge, "you fool,  this is Maureen O'hara, the Duke's Girl.  Get her a trailer."

She got a trailer.  Candy and O'hara are two of my all-time favorites.

thanks for the laughs john

The racket ball scene in Splash was pretty good too.  Hard to pick a favorite.  Used to watch SCTV religiously in HS.  This one always cracks me up even though Candy didn't do much in it.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles is still a movie I can watch no matter where it is when I see it on TV.   Just a great film.

“Well that’s not so bad...yeah I thought it would be a lot worse than this. They’ll be able to buff this out no problem. Oh yeah.”

He was a treasure. His cameo in JFK was such a tease about what he was capable of with an intense character. I'm one of those people who preferred Robin Williams in dramatic roles, and I feel similarly about John. PT&A and JFK gave us a glimpse about what he could do. He had so much more to give.

My all time favorite comedic actor is John Candy and Uncle Buck being my favorite John Candy movie with PTA coming in 2nd but I celebrate all of his work. In college we used to constantly drop John Candy lines when we were high.

Nothing but Trouble is amazing when you are high.

I am in agreement 100%. When Candy got mad at Garrison (Costner) in the lunch scene. I actually felt like he must have had an unreported off screen incident with Costner that allowed him to generate that level of emotion. I, like most people at the time. Believed John Candy to be a comedic actor who was gifted with excellent timing, but lacked the chops to deliver dramatic lines in that way. And in hindsight I wish he would have lived long enough to have had the opportunity to see just how far he could have gone with it.

I also agree with you on Robin Williams. He gets a huge nod by most for Patch Adams. But, I remember him more for his role as Dr Cozy Carlisle in Dead Again. Maybe his demons helped him find the depth of the character that he was portraying. But the guy was simply amazing doing drama.

Had a commercial breach of contract case where the chick who played the townie girlfriend of John Candy's son in The Great Outdoors handled the matter for the other side.  She is a very good attorney who practices in Colorado.  I told her when the case was done how much I loved that movie.  She laughed and told me how much fun they had making that picture.
