These weren’t your typical police in a typical situation. Those were security personnel guarding people who were directly in the line of succession to the Presidency, and the regular cops had lost almost complete control of the Capitol at that point She wasn’t shot because she was rushing into an area with a bunch of interns and staffers. She was going through a fucking barricade setup by people trying to protect Pence and some of the Congressional leaders who were in line to the Presidency. She was a Qanon nut who got it in her head that this was The Great Storm and she had to do her part. This is literally the ultimate scenario of “fuck around and find out” This is up there with trying to rush the President, or trying to break into a restricted area of an Air Force base that has nuclear weapons, or onto a US Navy submarine. It’s a shame her family had to suffer through this, but they should be suing the assholes behind Q and Qanon and 8kun who filled the head of a mentally ill women with delusions.32 points

So they’ve announced a suit, but aren’t sure who they are suing. Ok. Maybe we should sue them to get the taxpayer funding that paid for her military career back, since she traitored on it.14 points

Христос воскресе! Today is Orthodox Easter and I wanted lamb. It’s surprisingly hard to find here, but I procured two young shanks. To marinate, I used a while head of garlic (it’s not overdoing it, I promise), a fistful of rosemary, a splash of red wine vinegar, red wine, olive oil, and a squeeze of tomato paste with salt and pepper. You can just mix this all together, but I turned it into a paste and slashed the shanks to get it all the way through. Wipe some of it off and then go pretty heavy on salt and black pepper. Set up the Weber for indirect roast, but pretty hot. I’m sometimes jealous of y’all with the awesome backyard setups, but the balcony view is a trade off. Off the fire and sliced. Forgot to get a photo of the grilled asparagus, sautéed fresh peas, and wine that went with it.10 points

Y'know, Cabo Steve more or less rightly gets a lot of barfback on this, but "Li'l Casar" is the main culprit in this shitbag (now turbo-flushed) ordinance. It was he in June 2019 who wanted to ramrod this thing through, despite some councilmembers' hesitancy, wanting to postpone the vote for at least 2-3 months to study more solutions. But Li'l Casar wouldn't have any of it. He pushed it up for a vote, and in typical Casar fashion, pontificated while blaming it on leaders who, uh, had nothing to do with it in the first place. From Austin Chronicle, June 28, '19: https://www.austinchronicle.com/news/2019-06-28/council-dials-back-laws-targeting-homeless/ | "A stain on my conscience." Aww, how poetic. Sounds like Fitlump from the other side of the aisle. Sanctimonious crap. You don't think like I think? You are morally inferior to me! Bow to my moral GREATNESS! Blow it out your ass. Anyway Adler's getting all the shit, but it was Casar who steamrolled this thing in and the only comment he has so far is a blah blah blah roto-tweet on "we all want to get people into homes." Duh. He needs to be called out onto the carpet, too. Greggy, that's not why people shot your little prop down; it was because they're sick and tired of the dirt, repulsive manners (remember when Greggy said it'll all be good, y'know, because aggressive panhandling (and assaulting people) is still illegal, and y'know the police will serve justice! (I had a good laugh at that one). But the biggest irony is the jackass that rammed this through and croaked about "needing to fix it" hasn't fixed shit. And all he could muster is some halfass tweet in the face of burying his activist ideas into the shit that's found in many areas now in Austin. And This from 2019, AAS: https://www.statesman.com/news/20190621/city-council-rescinds-measures-that-critics-say-criminalize-homelessness Again, Casar, sponsored this... While Adler went along for the love-ride. Also, I love how he repeats the mantra at the time... "We haven't fixed everything yet." Nor ever did. My point is that Casar is a power-hungry faux saint - that his moral stances are the right ones, and there is no room for disagreement. And if he has to shanghai the entire city to see his views manifest, well, that's just a product of the morally inferior either suffering necessarily to eventually make life fantastic, or the morally superior knowing how everyone else should act. Even in this loss of his little experiment all he could muster was a clouded, self-egotistic filter which was another misrepresentation of why this idiotic ordinance went down in flames. But he'll be back espousing another self-aggrandizing intolerant project soon, so he won't fail to deliver soon. There are two kinds of homeless people: those who need help and those who need a kick in the nuts. I wish every day (especially when I drive by one of Casar's beautiful campsites) that both would get their just desserts. But Casar did nothing, nothing with that dumbass ordinance except make himself feel better that his little utopian view of the world could happen. And now its 10X worse than it ever was. Awesome ratsnake SurlyBDR. Well, it was a very active day out in the Katy Prairie. I figured it would be a good day to go with all the rain that we had, but wasn't expecting all the flooding. It was cool to sit in my truck and look out at the clear water on the gravel road and see tons of crawfish, birds, snakes and large fish. In total I saw 14 snakes, 6 different species, one of which was a "lifer" (first time catching one). When I got there, I saw a couple of Ribbon Snakes, a Dekay's Brown Snake, some sort of Nerodia (I think a plain bellied watersnake) and a nice looking Broad Banded watersnake swam across the road in front of me. Homesickhorn and his son were on their way to meet me, so while I waited I just went back and forth on Snek Road. On one end I saved a couple of turtles from being roadkill. On the second one I noticed it had a leach on it. I don't recall ever seeing a leach growing up in the NW burbs of Houston. Turns out it is a Turtle Leach and only likes their blood. I started to head back to the beginning of the road to meet up with Homesick and came across a nice Texas Ratsnake. Maybe 3.5' long. He wasn't too fond of me. Then a little further down the road, after a watersnake tried to get up in my wheel well, I caught this Ribbon Snake and decided to hold onto it to show Homesick's son... After meeting up with them, we turned around and headed down the road. Within a few minutes we see a ribbon swimming and as we stop to show his son, Homesick spots another Dekay's Brown swimming next to the truck. A second later while we are looking at the snakes, a big fat Tilapia (we think it was) swims his ass across the road right in front of us. The water was barely deep enough. We head down the road and come to a dry patch on the road and see a snake. From afar I thought it was a big Ribbon Snake. We jump out and I grab it and discover it is a Graham's Crayfish Snake. First one I have ever caught or even seen live in person. We were stoked. We all needed to head out, Homesick lead the way... A ways down the road, I see him swerve to avoid something, and it turns out to be a Cottonmouth. Not but 25 yards away I saw a second one. Both were juveniles. here was the first one... Not but maybe another mile up the road, at a stop sign I come across this little shit. Really, I sat it on the bedcover and it shat itself and rolled around in it. Glad I was wearing gloves. First Hognose of the year...7 points

That seems like an appropriately cautious statement. If things continue like that are, we are good to go. If a new and aggressive variant arises, we may have to reevaluate. I'm not sure why anyone would have a problem with that.7 points

The shooting should have started the moment they broke in through windows/doors. Imagine the exact same scenario, but at the White House, with the president inside. Like, they've broken in and are heading upstairs to the residence. "Oh no! Someone got shot! How dare you??".7 points

I think what you'll see going forward is something like a 70/30 split between the two, in Shane's favor, obviously. Then that number will go up in the playoffs, when they really want to take advantage of Buechele's special brand of athleticism.7 points

Hold up. Greg Casar is a good human being and an absolutely fantastic advocate for his until-recently-extremely-neglected district who worked, no bullshit, 20 hours a day making sure people here had water, food, and heating during our march ice storm while the heroes of your party (including, IIRC, the guy you voted for in the 2016 primary) fled to Cancun and blamed AOC for their failures to force power plants to winterize. While he was out distributing blankets and rounding up canned goods your team was on twitter. He is also a 31 year old DSA leader who isn't the mayor of anything. You people with your conspiracy bullshit crack me up. Greg Casar wants to decriminalize almost everything that isn't violence. Whatever it is he's doing, he comes by it honestly. If Adler deferred to him, that was Adler's mistake, not Casar's for taking him up on it.6 points

Sometimes, not always, but sometimes.... Bama lets aggy wear its letter jacket. Not in public. Oh, god no. LSU is the "public" bitch that gets to strut around in Bama's jacket. But at 3am, long after LSU has passed out when Bama wants to get dirty, they give aggy a call. After the mouth pissing and anal fisting, if aggy has been particularly nasty, Bama lets aggy run around in the backyard with the jacket. And for those glorious few minutes, it doesn't matter if nobody else can see....aggy is the belle of the ball. gig 'em6 points

One day I had a stressful, awful, long day at work. I was mad, confused, and a bundle of nerves. I got home, cleaned up, and got ready to watch some football when my then three year old son climbed up on the sofa next to me with a book and asked me to read it to him. To my eternal shame, I yelled at him that I just wanted to be left alone. He looked me in the eye, patted me on the arm, and said, "I'm sorry that you are sad. I'll read the book in my room." Then he gave me the best, least deserved hug in the world. I turned the TV off and read him every book he had. Twice. I don't deserve him, and he deserves better than me.6 points

I've told this one on TOS. I went through a horrible, 5-year custody battle over my daughter. It's a long story. Anyway, I picked her up from daycare when she was about 2 1/2 years old. It was Mother's Day weekend. She had an armful of Mother's Day cards, drawings, etc... As I drove her over to her mom's house, I started thinking about how cool it would be to get this kind of stuff when Father's Day came around. This was kind of odd for me, because I'd never really been the sentimental type. Fast forward to Father's Day. She gets in the car with absolutely nothing. (The daycare had so many fatherless kids, they decided to omit the arts and crafts for dads. I didn't take it personally.) So anyway, we're driving to my place. I'm a little sad that I didn't get anything. Suddenly, out of nowhere, I hear, "Happy Father's Day Daddy. I love you" in the tiniest little voice. She had never spoken those words before to me. I damn near had to pull over it got so dusty. We're as tight as a father and daughter can possibly be today. I'm so glad I fought for her. It would have been so easy to say "F it" and move back to Texas at the time. Hard to believe she's a handful of months from graduating college.6 points

A lot of the current homeless population came here from somewhere else. Just like it rapidly increased when Adler put up the “Welcome” sign two years ago. Word travels fast in any community. What a clusterfuck. So many ways to have approached this better and just a fucking fail. it really doesn’t matter your personal politics on this one. What Adler did was beyond dumb. It wasn’t compassionate and it was not helping the most vulnerable members of our society. Instead of helping homeless Austinites first and having success at that the city chose to compound the problem by not only not solving that first but inviting more people to show up. Fuck Adler. again, there are countless examples of cities who have success in this arena—following SF and Seattle was a dumb fuck move. Like I said, for me it is not about politics. It’s about the solution and doing what works. Haven for Hope in San Antonio has been successful. We basically started a grease fire with this mess. It pisses me off.5 points

Wife and I have had a lot of stress lately due to a multitude of factors. We've only asked our kids to clean their rooms and not worry about other areas of the house. My youngest takes it upon herself to clean the entire house, including our bathroom. I said to her that she didn't need to clean her parents bathroom and all these other rooms. She responds with "oh I know, I just wanted to do something nice for you and Mommy since you've been really busy lately with (what's been stressing us out)". This kid is the best. She earlier said she wanted a hamster for her birthday. We were less inclined to add another animal to the household. The kid definitely got the hamster after this display of altruism.5 points

I want to say this up front and get it out of the way: I went to HS in the Sugar Land area, and at the time it was hardcore Republican (our Representative was Tom DeLay). Parents were Republicans, I was a Republican all through the 90s (George H. W. was my first Presidential vote), but not hardcore - I didn't care what Clinton did, other than if it required me to be deployed overseas. Surrounded by Republicans at various jobs, in the Army, and even in college (but did not go down the College Republican rabbit hole). Heard way too many hours of Rush Limbaugh (but wasn't whipped up by him, more entertained than anything) When it was clear that George W. was running for the WH, I had friends convince me to join the campaign as a volunteer and then paid worker, with the view that I could use that to get a job outside of the tech industry (I ultimately bailed on that, as I found a tech job I was happy at and had gotten married). I'm not going to rehash everything, but I bailed on Bush and the Republicans for the most part by the time 2004 rolled around. Iraq was a huge issue for me and one that I could not overcome. Palin as VP choice in 2008 was probably the last straw. I had voted for the occasional Democrat for one reason or another, voted for plenty of Libertarians and Constitution Party types, but prior to 2016, really didn't vote for more than a handful of Democrats. The result is that outside of a few relatives and (more and more) friends, and liberals here on Surly, I don't have a solid grasp on Democrats at large. So no, I can't definitively talk about whether both groups engage in this behavior, as I have never actually been a part of a full-blown liberal group or immersed myself in such a campaign, or have spent years only voting for (D). But in my time as a Republican for over a decade, and in my time working for W's campaign, I never saw the wide spread nastiness that I saw in 2016 through now. I was aware of the rumors that Rove was trying to destroy McCain with the "McCain has a black baby" rumors, but I also knew about the rumors (and some of the truths) that other candidates were trying to bring W down with in the primaries. I'm now well aware of Newt's war against the Clintons, much more aware than I was then - I was more concerned with getting laid and getting paid than who Bill was banging or Hillary was executing, but in hindsight, that feels more like a vendetta against the Clintons than anything, and feels more "localized". I do know that I didn't see George W spend his press conferences pushing personal vendettas against the Democrats and he wasn't going around to rallies getting people to chant "Lock him (Al Gore or Kerry or Bill) up!" and supporting groups that believed the liberals were literally demon-possessed. For all of his faults, I didn't see George W embracing the batshittery coming out of the Alex Jones camp (and in fact Jones despised Bush). I didn't see Obama going around to rallies, to cheers of "Lock McCain up again!" or "Lock Mitt up!", and he didn't spend his time embracing batshit extremist movements that believed Republicans were cannibalistic humanoid underground pedophiles (CHAPs) that were living off of the blood of children. I didn't see Bush or Obama cheer on people at rallies who wanted their political opponents locked up (or worse), or talk about beating up liberals or conservatives in the crowd. But over the last 4 years, I've watched Donald Trump constantly trash Democrats at press conferences, at rallies, on twitter. I've seen him embrace groups that believe liberals are cannibalistic pedophiles, and that believe he is going to round up his enemies and execute them on the steps of the Capitol or wherever. I've seen him constantly cheer on people who want his political opponents locked up. I have seen Trump deliberately spread misinformation about things, simply because liberals embraced whatever it was, including misinformation about covid, that could harm or even killed his followers. I have seen Trump encourage his followers to "liberate" states like Michigan, that had liberal leaders. And prior to 2016, I saw Trump try and do everything possible to make his fans believe that Obama was not a legitimate President and American. And it all culminated in January 6th. George H. W., Bill Clinton, George W. and Obama never went so hard in the paint in trying to trash people with different ideologies. Not even Newt at his worst in the 90s was trying to sow chaos on such a widespread level. And the GOP as a whole is still refusing to disavow the worst of what Trump said and did. And for all of their faults, CNN, CNBC, MSNBC, etc. don't devote their entire evening blocks to just trashing the shit out of anybody who doesn't have a liberal viewpoint, unlike Fox News who has embraced and pushed the idea that liberals are literally destroying the country and won't be happy until the Russians or Chinese or whoever take over.5 points
