Honestly, wait on cutting Warehime while we still have TWO mostly useless WR coaches puttering around.

I'm not sure what Meekins is really doing.  I know we all feel like Meh is usueless - but I've at least seen players mention him in their tweets and talk about him in interviews.  I can't remember the last time I've even heard Meekins name mentioned - by anyone.

I know it means nothing to you, but I agree 100% with you. Orlando gets a free pass for his coaching, and I’m not sure why. I don’t think Beck is a top-flight guy, and his offenses put up very similar rankings to Orlando’s defenses over the years. However, Beck is an outstanding recruiter. Orlando isn’t.

It’s much easier to hate an OC than the DC for fans. I’m not sure why, but every team seems to hate their OC, but very few hate their DC.

Just assume every top tier DL/RB recruit is going somewhere else. Texas is the Knicks when it comes to attracting Tier 1 RD/DL talent these days.

This where I am, particularly with DL. I will be pleasantly shocked if Broughton picks us, but until that time I just assume he’s gone.

That said, it’s clear at the very least that Broughton has not informed the A&M coaches of his decision, which I suppose one could take as a positive sign if one is a recruiting masochist.

Id say every person who comes on Surly and reads this thread qualifies.

Yup, Mehringer has the recruiting wins and travels around. He has his issues obviously, but he isn't the invisible man like Meekins.

All this post tells me is that you don't know the definitions for the following words: Touch, Poke, Prod, Tease, Pester, Annoy, Torment, Worry, Irk, Harass, Disturb, or Bother.

The good news is I can't say with any certainty that you don't understand the definitions for Ruffle or Feed.

If they don’t include the word insert then they’ll think this doesn’t pertain to them.

So to recap the last 150 or so pages. Our coaches all suck, Tom Herman is mensa-stupid, last year was an aberration, and we're gettin' ne'erbody? Now that is some positive energy going forward.  Thanking God we are not playing Maryland again

He did well in 2018, when we had a first year bump and minimal competition, but since then He has way more losses than wins.

Jake Smith was Beck. He went 1-2 on Bru, lost Wright, Wilson, and Higgins (I won’t even count Wease in here bc he was never going to UT) while getting Whittington. Lewis and Washington were late fallbacks (still like them a ton but don’t really count them as a recruiting win for Meh) after his other misses and Washington was more Carrington than Meh.

In 2020, heMs already lost Deman and Omeire (even if we don’t like him, the staff tried and would’ve taken his commitment if they won it). We’ll see how he does with Johnston and Wilson. I expect at least one more miss and another good fallback, like Fouonji will end up in the class.

Meh also got demoted by Herman and the WR rotations and coaching was god awful the year he had full control of the WR room, remember all the offensive PIs and most of the WRs hating him.

So rather than argue which of Warehime, Meh, sand Meekins is the least shitty, I’d rather we just put Beaty at one spot and fill the other with Samples (if Herman thinks he can handle it) or go get an elite recruiter for TE.

But honestly, even just canning two of them for Beaty and a defensive assistant would be a huge improvement.

RECRUITING

All eyes are captivated by the Vernon Broughton recruitment. The state doesn't produce prototype defensive linemen often. After Lagaryonn Carson had his issues and A&M landed DeMarvin Leal, the search for a true difference making defensive end continues with the 6-foot-5, 285 pound Cy Ridge ball of clay.

If you've followed we were bullish on UT's chances for almost the entire cycle, and even more so after the Broughtons took their official visit to UT. With that visit being the first of five, though, it allowed other programs to chip away. And chip away they did.

Currently this looks like a two-horse race between UT and A&M with Vernon set to announce on Monday. He'll shoot his commitment video on Sunday.

No program seems to be overly optimistic or pessimistic of their chances and that uncertainty probably helps rather than hinders Texas. If Broughton was still leaning towards Texas then other schools would continue the negative recruiting parade. As it sits they should just be selling their own pros. The most optimism we've heard after checking in on the three regional contenders with a chance (LSU is out) probably stems from A&M but it sounds more like wishful thinking and Facebook like-farming than anything else.

If you thought we were going to go into great detail in this recruitment this morning you're not paying attention. This is a huge weekend for the staff and they just need room to keep Gile'n and profile'n.

There are still some wild rumors out there but I think anything "wild" can be discounted because Yolanda Broughton has been steering this ship on a well charted path. She knows what she's doing.

We're going to maintain our course at 50/50. I think that's where we had it for Malik Jefferson up until the end.

#####

Since it became obvious California prep star Kendall Milton wouldn't be going to UT there have been three five-star running backs to pay attention to: Tucson (AZ) Salpointe Catholic’s Bijan Robinson, Aledo's Jase McClellan, and North Shore's Zach Evans. We'll go one-by-one.

It's almost certain Bijan Robinson will pick Ohio State on August 2nd. From what we can gather he's still in contact with Texas but the writing is on the wall. With the time invested him and the inroads made with the family they'll stay on him. There's a decent chance Robinson will visit down the road.

McClellan's situation is getting more interesting and coincides with schools taking a step back from Zach Evans. Yes, it does appear to be true that schools like Georgia and Alabama are backing off Evans for now, and in his place they're pushing harder for McClellan. The biggest advocate for Texas in the McClellan household is Jase's mother but we don't think she holds the sway some other mothers do. As we've written with McClellan we think he has some issues with the Texas scheme. Those issues could be put to bed this season. He's pretty open despite his OU commitment.

Seeing Justin post that he thought Texas had a good chance with Evans "today" was like waking up and seeing Shuttlesworth put Saban at 75%. "Oh no baby what is you doin'?" If national powers back off of Evans it does open the door some for in-state schools, but that shouldn't factor into long-term forecasts. Those schools just don't feel like dealing with the roller coaster now but will step up efforts later. If Evans wasn't mercenary he never would have left Texas out of his fictitious top-five because UT has always shown him love. That point was made clear when he visited a few weeks ago. That visit was his best one to Texas. The air was cleared and it seems like a new beginning. But until we're blue in the face we'll state this recruitment doesn't start until November and everything before then is jockeying for position. If you don't think Bama and/or Georgia or LSU are going to circle back you're crazy.

The staff cannot go down the stretch putting all its eggs in the five-star running back basket. We'll try to mine some new names at the position over the weekend.

We'll have a 2021 quarterback post for tomorrow.

Mike Roach: Analyzing the in-state running backs for 2020

With the dead period underway and coaches on vacation, I've decided to go to work and build my personal rankings for the state of Texas. Over the next few days, I'll use Mike at Night to walk you through my thoughts on players at each position. Tonight, we focus on running backs and specifically look at the big three stars at the top of the board.

—This is the best running back class in-state in a long time. Not only is it deep, but it’s also insanely talented at the top. The trio of Zachary Evans, Jase McClellan, and Seth McGowan are all guys I can see being big time difference makers at the next level. Let’s take a look at all of them individually.

—Zach Evans is a SPECIAL athlete. When I first saw film of him on the field, I took him for a classic downhill back who could play with power between the tackles. The first time I saw him in a 7v7 environment, I realized he was a different type of player. His verified testing numbers in the camp settings bear this out. The 4.51 40 on the laser is more impressive than people give that number credit for, but a 3.84 shuttle at his size is ridiculous. The North Shore offense fairly straight forward, but you can see those traits in his HUDL clips along with his ability to be physical. I’ve called him a once in a decade like prospect, and I fully believe he has the potential to reach that status. It’s for that reason alone he’s my number one in-state player.

—Aledo’s Jase McClellan really caught my eye when he won MVP at the state championship as a freshman. His numbers aren’t that far off from Evans’. 4.55 40, 3.97 shuttle, 37 inch vertical. His running style hides the athletic traits because he’s incredibly smooth as he glides through traffic. I love his ability to slip through tight spaces and his natural feel for defenders. His balance is exceptional, and he adds a lot to the receiving game. He shows a good amount of power, and he can make a house call at any time. McClellan has been known since his freshman season, so he’s suffering from that natural tendency people have to find flaws the longer they know a player. I think he’s still in that five-star range, and he’s got a great approach to his off-field work.

—Seth McGowan has the potential to be the best guy in this class. He’s built like a prototype and has the work ethic to go along with it. He doesn’t have the raw speed of Evans and McClellan, but I think he’s as good of a one-cut runner as you’ll find. He shows plus vision, and his ability to get low and absorb contact without losing momentum will allow him to attack in wide open spread offenses. McGowan’s maturity and professional approach to the game are light years ahead of most high school backs, and he’ll go in with a chip on his shoulder after living in the shadow of McClellan and Evans.

—I would rank all three of these players in the top 10 in-state, and I think all of them would be an excellent number one back for any school in the country.

—Tahj Brooks of Manor is a guy who really opened some eyes this spring. At 5-foot-11, 212 pounds, he’s more of a bowling ball type, and he doesn’t have that overwhelming speed. That said, I think he’s a guy to keep an eye on to see how his senior season turns out. If you’re looking for a guy who can thrive in a pro-spread, Brooks fits that mold.

—Jesuit’s EJ Smith is a guy I think will probably come back to haunt a lot of teams. Like his father Emmitt, there isn’t an obvious athletic trait that stands out, but he’s really good at just about everything he does. He runs routes like a receiver, but he can excel getting carries out of the backfield as well. File the name away because I think he’s a guy we’ll see making plays on Saturdays in the fall.

—Another guy flying under the radar in-state is Lancaster’s Tre Bradford. He’s probably more of a combo player than a straight back, but his speed and explosiveness is hard to ignore. I think he could even fit as an “H” type player at the next level because he has receiver skills to go along.

—West Mesquite’s Ty Jordan has a speed component you can’t coach, but his height relegates him to a specialist player in the minds of most. He posted a 10.54 in the 100 meters this track season, and he has that wiggle and acceleration that schools like TCU exploit Big 12 defenses with. He’s also got the versatility to play slot or back, and I think he’s a guy you move all over to exploit space.

—He’s overshadowed playing with Zach Evans, but Arkansas got a major sleeper in John Gentry. He may not possess the wiggle you look for, but he’s got speed to burn and gives you versatility as a receiver out of the backfield. If he played for any other team, he might be a more highly-recruited prospect.

Best Zip: Hudson Card

There’s no question Card’s zip was a pleasant surprise throughout the week. On the first day, Card was the best in a drill where the quarterback was asked to make a far hash throw without stepping or loading. The velocity of his throws also stood out in other drills and throughout 7-on-7 play. That crossed over to some of the measurements taken by the Elite 11 staff, as Card registered the highest max velocity of the competitors, despite weighing the least at 176 pounds.

Maybe we did get the best QB in the state?

The amount of random Card hate on this board was surprising.  I like Jackson a lot for Herm's scheme, but I think Card has a better chance to throw 30+ TDs in a season than any guy Texas has had in a decade.

We had a guy throw for 25 last year while missing 2 games due to injury, and you think the best shot to hit 30+ TDs isn't currently on UT's campus? That's interesting.

details please?

Been checking around with a number of different sources this morning. Here's what I'm hearing ...

I mentioned earlier in the week that Broughton could announce as early as next week. That looks like it will be the case. I'm hearing it'll probably be Monday, but things could get pushed back a day or so if necessary. Regardless, we should have our final answer at some point early next week.

I'm hearing from multiple sources that there is growing confidence on the UT side. Conversely, when I spoke with an A&M source this morning, I was told that there's a feeling that the Aggies' confidence has dwindled from where it was about a week ago.

As I've said before, this was always going to be a family decision and the input from Broughton's mother and grandmother was going to weigh heavily into the final choice. It sounds like the family has come to a decision, and now it's just a matter of Vernon putting the finishing touches on some things and announcing his choice next week. Ohio State has been a school that he's really liked, but I don't think there's any way he goes that far from home, so this one will come down to Texas or Texas A&M and there's confidence in Austin. Buckle up.

Did you read futureman’s post directly above your’s?  I don’t think you did.  You should take that friendly advice.

You likely the only one that saw futureman's post as everyone else put him, and his schtick, on ignore long ago.

It's neither. Think of the profanity as a form of emphasis, like italics or an underline of the words around it. It's like a rug that really ties the room together.

In other words, I cannot be destroyed.
