Is this one of those speeches where Obama acts like an impartial observer with no role in where we stand now?

It’s like an episode of Intervention when the junkie’s dad who was an abusive junkie starts talking about how you need to be better than this and how could this have happened.  All while the junkie dad’s enabler wife (Hugo) nods condescendingly.

It’s truly amazing to me when people seriously try to blame the current situation on Obama. Like, do they hear themselves?

I hate to say this but Obama isn’t innocent.  He saw this freight train coming from 2010 and pretty much neglected it.

Political cartoon from 2014

He should have done more to assuage the folks that were feeling left behind or at least pandered better.  He completely dropped the ball on Russia too which he also should have seen coming.

It’s not all his fault though, everyone shares some responsibility for this mess.

No not everyone does. Those who couldn’t/cannot recognize that Donald Trump is unfit for office, and fucking voted for him, share all of the responsibility. This isn’t about people left behind or economic anguish. It’s about a bunch of people getting conned. Be smarter

Every POTUS has blind spots or areas where he is ineffective, for a variety of reasons.

Not every POTUS commits treason.

True.

However, there’s no excuse for letting Russia do what they did to us... Especially since they ran the exact same shit in Ukraine and Georgia successfully,  both times under Obama’s watch.

If we stop defending democracy abroad, it will catch up and bite us in the ass on homeland.

Here we are.

But why were they so easy to con?  Why were they so weak and vulnerable? We’re supposed to be stronger than that.

It’s on everyone of us.

God I feel like we are totally derailing and I get what you’re sayin, but what should Obama have done? Launched an invasion? Trigger a nuclear war? What was he supposed to have done?

Because they are stupid, fascist, or racist. Or some combination of the three. That’s not on me. Or you. It’s on them.

Pretty much how I see it too.  Just need for everything to go all red to confirm it.  Then what?

Pretty much everything we’re trying to do now and Trump refuses to do.  Because this is really a global problem, build international coalitions with NATO/EU to educate the public, increase awareness.  CALL PUTIN OUT PUBLICLY for the THUG POS he is early and often.  Double down on Magnitsky Sanctions since that obvious hurts Putin the most.  Do more to help Ukraine.  Increase the DOJ resources on fighting international organized crime.

You don’t have to start a war or drop bombs to hit back.  Obama should have acted more like the leader of a super power under attack instead of approaching it with the attitude, “that Russia stuff only works on weak democracies.”  Hubris was his biggest error.

It’s easy to write the Trump voters off as stupid fascist racists but that’s kinda what they do with Hillary voters, “they’re all stupid brainwashed socialist snowflakes.”  It’s fair to hold the Trump voters responsible but I think it’s important to view them as Americans first.  They are our relatives, neighbors, and coworkers.  Vilifying and broad brushing them with inflammatory buzzwords doesn’t solve anything.  It only helps those in power keep us divided.

We don’t have to tolerate racism nor should we. However, if we really want to fix this, we should pull closer Trump voters that recognize their error instead of punishing and pushing them away.

I’m not trying to play both sides.  I’m trying to illustrate, at the end of the day, there isn’t two sides.  There’s one side, the American people’s side.  And everyone should be working to find common ground to make our government and people better.

Who is pushing them away? Trump voters that recognize they got duped are not an issue. It's the people who still fervently support him.

And honestly, the number of people that have publicly admitted they made a mistake by voting for Trump is extremely small.

We caught “Active Measures” last night.  It’s basically “Hugo Stiglitz: The Movie.”  So if you’ve been paying attention here, you won’t learn anything new.  But there are a ton of Americans out there who aren’t paying attention, and the film packages the info in a way that’s easy to digest while still inspiring a sense of overwhelming dread.

I came away feeling like Rowdy Roddy Piper in “They Live.”  There’s Russian propaganda behind every divisive story.  We’ve got to get as many people as possible to wear the glasses and see this shit for what it is.

This is all warm and fuzzy and well and good, but this isn't just some difference in ideology of the two parties.  The people who still support him are way gone.  They actually ARE brainwashed and there's no coming back.  I think there are a good number of people who voted for him who have seen the error of their ways, even if they don't go out of their way to publicly admit it.  I don't think they would vote for him again.  But 30% of this country are lost souls.  They aren't coming back.

Is there a 15 minute fight scene with Keith David?

Because of pride.   To admit their support of Trump was a bad thing on their part is a double whammy, because then they are basically admitting they were too lazy or brainwashed to look at anything else but Trumptalk.  Which flies in the face of the definition of a good citizen.

I fully agree with your assessment of that program.  I do my best to keep up here, but there are so many pieces and parts to this puzzle it gets pretty confusing fast.  Especially for me when I get hung up just trying to figure out how to pronounce a name.  But yeah, this did a good job in laying it out and connecting the dots.

One thing I came away with was we (as Americans) are not the only ones who despise Putin.  There are many in his own country that do as well, not to mention the Ukraine, Georgia and probably all of the EU.  We are not alone in this battle.  Now that it has been proven that Russia has meddled in our politics (and how) we should be taking up this cause and leading the rest of the world against Putin and his ilk.  But we are doing the exact opposite, or Trump is stalling any attempts along these lines.  He is fully compromised.

Putin is not unstoppable.  And I feel what he has done and is doing in the US will be the beginning of his downfall.  If we have to stoop to mob-ish tactics  to accomplish this, then so be it.  The Georgia offensive they pulled off was effective in showing how weak their military is.   We need to fight him using these new tactics.  Hell, we made Twitter and Facebook, we should be able to beat them at this game of social media manipulation as well.

But FIRST, we need to come together as a country.  We need to be smart enough to overcome these divisive tactics.  That has to start with us and our neighbors.

You cannot reason with a deplorable. The right is responsible for them and including them into their party. They won’t believe me if I tell them that 2+2 = 4. The right has to own it.

This.  I was thinking about showing Active Measures to my in-laws, but I think it would just be immediately dismissed as fake news.  These people are irreparable.

That’s the insurmountable challenge here. It’s a language barrier. Humans generally try to persuade with some measure of facts, logic, and reason.

Here we have a group of people who have not just rejected those things, but have declared them to be fake, and anyone who even attempts to present them is an “enemy of the people.”

It’s like trying to burn water, an utter waste of time.

Dismiss them, isolate them, shame them, and keep them as non-influential as possible. Quarantine the stupid. You can’t eradicate it, but you can limit its influence and spread.

The only language they understand is emotional. Fortunately, most of them have a very fond memory of Reagan. I've been having moderate success repeatedly bringing up Reagan's views of the Russians. Also, crediting Romney with being more correct about Russia than Obama was helps.

Remind them that Russia has been our chief enemy for 80 years and nothing has changed, except our perceptions of them.

It's easy to write off Trump voters as racist, stupid, etc., but the truth is that hidden in all of the insanity, Trump spoke to a real discontent and problem. There were a sizable number of Obama-Trump voters because in some ways they both spoke to the same lingering and typically ignored problem. Find candidates who speak to the same issue and you'll break the Trump spell.

So did Hitler.   Sometimes you're just speaking a shitty message to really shitty people.   Nobody is going to break the Trump spell.  It's a cult of personality based in impotence, insecurity, and hatred.  The key is outvoting the shitty people where it counts, which shouldn't be difficult with non-Hillary candidates.

The movie was missing the NRA angle but I suppose that’s because it hasn’t been fully fleshed out yet.

That should be its own documentary some day.

I am thinking these people will impact the midterms, many by simply staying home.  It’s the easiest, most passive-aggressive thing they could do.
