Deion Sanders "Coach Prime" Now At Colorado

Perhaps Prime is the new coaching style that we will see in all of college football as it's transitioning to professional football. If you're not producing on the field, you gotta go. You're in the way of bringing in someone via the transfer portal. Don't care what was said by me or another coach at your momma's kitchen table. Trash is thrown away.

There's no waiting for the player who might finally do something on the field when they're a senior.

We might see some programs soon stop all high school recruiting except for 4-5 star athletes. Why bring in 3s or less when you can pull that level of talent from the transfer portal.

What's odd is new. See the 70s movie, One on One for coaches running off underperforming athletes.

Nick Saban has been using grey shirts and running off non producers for years. This is nothing new other than Prime is more outspoken about it.

That's an interesting take.

I know these schools do not fit your scenario, but it would be fun to see a school like Vanderbilt or Kansas refuse to recruit anything less than 4 star players.

I wonder if they would be able to field a team

If 700+ players are entering the portal each December, I would think that a SEC school, even Vandy, could find players to fill out the rosters. Vandy can tell those portal recruits that they're giving them exposure to other SEC programs. They could transfer again.

It would take the right coach and program to effectively become a mercenary school. I'm reminded of UNLV using JUCO basketball players to take them deep in the tourney. But instead of JUCO players, my example is using other D1 schools as your pipeline.

And let's follow the Vandy hypothetical. Say there were successful in reloading each spring via the portal. If they started to win in the SEC with those players, they would start to recruit a handful of 4/5* high school players.

It's important to remember that the portal is pivoting. I think many fans think of it as a way for a bench player to transfer or someone that just needs a new environment. While that will still be an reality, the bigger use case is the superstar wanting more.  More NIL, more exposure, more wins, higher draft pick.

I see a bit of a similarity between the newer portal and transfer rules and how schools like Kansas State operate (or used to)

They were juco heavy and often times, it worked out for them. So basically, bringing in older and possibly more experienced / stronger players.

I feel like filling slots with JUCOs and transfers while building the core in-house is probably the way to maintain consistent success. Always having to hit on free agents and have them gel seems pretty risky, though I can’t put a number on it.

That's interesting premise and I wonder if that should be a concern.

That said, does a player that has proven he is a star need to transfer? Wouldn't they just go  pro?

One guy that comes in mind is Andrew Luck. He was slotted to be a very high draft pick his last 2 years at Stanford. Why would he transfer to a different school?

Yeah I agree. I don't see how a team could just live in the portal. I think the core has to be high school players that get developed in house and establish culture and then the rest are filled out with transfers and possibly juco players. Which actually makes me wonder, has the newer transfer / portal rules diminished the value of many juco players? I would think the best ones will always have a spot, but perhaps the fringe ones have to now accept offers to lower tier programs.

It's mostly going to be backups that transfer. Kids who were highly rated in high school but aren't seeing the field are going to try to find homes that offer playing time. Usually if the kid was actually playing, he's in the portal either because his coach got fired or he doesn't like his coach.

What’s cringeworthy about what he said? They went 1-11. They look soft and disinterested rather than ready to get to work five minutes after the speech. Most coaches go in saying things are changing and they need to buy in.

He also said nothing about stripping JSU. He likely has a ton of players wanting to now portal and play for him and he’ll likely have a killer signing day. I’d you’re deadwood you gotta go. He can pull scholarships just based on film.

Those facillities looked like shit. Most Texas high schools have a better meeting room than that. Looks like they still use a projector on a cart and an overhead. Like 1975.

Whatever

What is most surprising to me is how much attention is being paid to Sanders taking over at Colorado. I didn’t realize it was that big of a story. Zimmer coming on board is pretty interesting. That’s a dude with cred.

you can look right at Texas for some of what is going on here

the #1 issue with Texas is there has not been a coach here in decades that had the ability to tell players "you are a giant fucking pussy take a seat" and get respect for it from the players, the media, or anyone else

Mack Brown just did not have that in him no matter what and never will and we can still see the results of that with the giant pussy chrissy simms and his "hot take" in TCU and the Big 12......shit fans that hate Texas were mocking him and calling him out for sucking at Texas and in the NFL and for being a giant vag

no one after Mack Brown got any respect from players especially when shit went south on them after a season......Charlie GTFO, Tom was a G5 coach and had no respect at a top P5 to try his G5 bullshit with the media, fans, or players and that is why he was let go and no need to see even one more year of that.....Sark better hit the transfer portal hard this year AND send some dead weight packing (like Prime is doing packing their bags for them and having someone take their phone from them and ordering them an Uber off campus to the nearest airport or even the bus station)

you don't think Prime is looking at Nick during those commercials and picking his brain and watching how he moves and probably showing up to some practices to see some assholes getting ripped open

that is what Texas needs a coach that can tell players to GTFO and the rest of the team throws rotten food at them on the way out and tells them to toughen up at their next stop or be a pussy forever and then they get back to trying to eat each other and win

same issue with aggy none of those players give a fuck about jimbo and they do not give a fuck about what jimbo says about them to anyone as they leave that is why they are smoking weed in the locker room and fucking off every night because they know if they are worth a fuck they can transfer to OU and win a Heisman or transfer somewhere else and win a ton of games and make it to the NFL.....or hell even lose a lot of games at aggy, fuck off weekly, and still get to the NFL

with Prime if he shits on you on the way out the door that has weight and that makes other coaches hesitant about you and is a sign you are a real fucking idiot even if you have talent

very few coaches have that leverage these days.....even fewer have it with players moms or in rare cases with players that have a mom and a fuck head "involved dad"

none of these "involved dads" want to get a call from Prime letting them know that Prime has labeled their son a Grade A Prime Fucking Loser and he is sending their ass back home on the next Greyhound

none of these "involved dads" (or these "my baby" moms) give a fuck if Charlie, Tom, jimbo or 85% of the other coaches out there call and tell them their son is a fuck head because they already think that coach is a fuck head and their son should be elsewhere

as for the race thing I think Deion knows that is there for him to use, but I think he has ZERO interest in that UNLESS things get where he gets stuck winning 5 or 6 games a season to start and some media types with an axe to grind because Deion treats them like the fuck heads they are start really coming after him and even then I think he would only go to it if he KNEW the next year was going to be a big jump in wins.....and more so because then he could really shit on the careers of some of those types and possibly cost them a job or make them forever kiss his ass

at this point I think he went to Colorado to take the "hard route" because at this point I think he likes what Nick has and he wants that.....and the way to get that is to work magic at a shit hole like CU and then the ability to pick from many jobs is there and the ability to have Prime's coaching rehab and the respect of fans, media, players, moms, shit head "involved dads" and to wholesale churn through 4 and 5 star players is set in stone like it is for Nick and you just reload and move on and even if some of you cast offs go other places and do well or extremely well people will still give you credit for "waking them up" and once you have that well your players have to respect and fear you and they know from day 1 what they are walking into and then all the talking and speeches are no longer needed you can just point to hardware

I find your ideas fascinating and would like to subscribe to your newsletter

I agree.

the guy who posted the premise was suggesting starters may move to better programs or programs for more nil money. If the guy is already a star, I don't see it because his value is likely and already recognized.

Kids already making NIL at schools aren't going to leave to make more NIL at other schools. I think this very much turns into the end of getting 4 years to try to get to contributor status. I think a lot of guys that don't commit to a school or have a breakout season at a smaller school or consistent production at a smaller school will just get cycled out of college football altogether. Rosters are laden with non contributors. I think this uplevels that.

Except in your basketball example, all you need is one Larry Johnson to become a Top 5 college basketball program/national championship contender. You need much more than that to reach that level in college football.

True but even basketball never had a marketplace like the transfer portal. Formally or informally you will have a Deion Sanders or a Nick Saban put out the word when they lose a starting CB in the spring game. Then all of the CBs across all teams will decide for themselves to enter the portal or not.  Maybe you're starting at TCU but Bama looks more promising.

And remember that entering the portal doesn't mean you are transferring. It only means that you're open to offers. There's an argument that any or all players should enter every year. Hell, it even forces your current coach to convince you to stay. "Want me to stay, I could use more NIL $. Get on that."

You didn't state it but there was an opinion above that the portal will only be backups who want more playing time. Tell that to Pitt last year when they lost the top college WR to USC.  Players will rightfully learn how to work the system to their benefit.

People seem surprised to find out that arguably the greatest DB of all time and a Hall of Famer would know what good looks like in terms of coaching and evaluating players. He was instant impact at Jackson State. I doubt highly that he is not going to do the same at CU. Impact won't mean 10 wins out of the gate, but I would be surprised to see them get their asses handed to them.

I think the Pac 12 requires schools to commit to four years, and that is why Prime is trying to scare players into entering the portal before he even shows up. I could be wrong about that, though.

Pac guarantees a scholarship for 4 years.  Does not guarantee a spot on the roster.

All time great players do not always make the best coaches. I would argue most fail at it. It remains to be seen whether Sanders can win at the top level. We don't know how he will do. His results at Jackson State offer promise but promise doesn't equal success. Even success coaches sometimes fail at new jobs.

Past performance doesn't guarantee future results? People might fail at shit they try to do? More people tend to fail when shit is really difficult? News at 11

Coach Prime can establish a winning culture and recruit coaches and players. Looks like a winning formula to me.

Even extremely nice guy Steve Sarkisian does, as well. And incoming coaches look through the commitment lists and tell players either, "You don't have an offer anymore" or "It would probably be in your best interest to open up your recruitment", which is functionally the same thing.

People are working overtime to find crimes being committed by Sanders here. Meanwhile, he went and talked to his JSU kids face-to-face while the new Cincy guy (or whoever) Facetimed them from the airport.

Reminds me of the 0-60 war that manufacturers have been in for a while. After about 4 seconds, what are we even really doing? 800 HP... why? I feel like my face is coming off of my body and I'm going to kill people in this thing.

"We got Hattori Hanzo out of retirement and paid him $800k to make the straight razors we use in the barbershop corner. The strops they use are made from the hides Wagyu cattle fed nothing but sake and organic grains. Stop eyeing the Papa John's pizza boxes and pay attention!"

Yeah. The only reason to have those palaces is recruiting. I don't think they serve any practical purpose.

Right, I think the medical is the main way to do it.  Then the kid has 2 choices - either stay and finish up a degree but no longer play football, or transfer.  Lots of those kinds of decisions are going to be made by these players in the next few months.  It sucks for them, but that's the reality of CFB.

Coach: Son, your knee injuries have kept you from playing this year. You need to medically retire which frees up your spot.

Player: Actually I feel great coach, looking forward to Spring practice.

Coach: I don't think you heard me. You are retiring.

You will see more stratification between bigtime programs, second tier, and third tier and FCS schools. Big schools will offer fewer high schoolers, grey shirt or runoft poor performers and focus on grabbing higher performing proven portal players.

Players who are playing ball in hopes of going to the NFL will portal for various reasons. If I’m not being developed properly, even if I’m starting and winning, I might leave to improve my draft status. If I’m not starting I’m leaving.

If you’re a kid that wants to earn a scholarship to get a degree then there will be plenty of smaller and regional schools to go to for five years and get a masters. But unless you’re top drawer you won’t be doing it at Texas or similar schools.

More of Sanders' exit meeting with his players at JSU.

A lot of guys thanking him for giving them second chances and helping them grown up. This all right before he's about to get on a plane to leave. If I was a Colorado fan I wouldn't be worried about the locker room.

Kid: "I'm from the media team..."
Deion: "I ain't ever seen you before in my life."

lol damn
