Justin Wells: Saturday Recruiting Notes from Austin

Quote

Steve Sarkisian brought in some of the best talent in the country for official visits this weekend in Austin. And landed Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy RB, On3 four-star Jerrick Gibson today. Our Justin Wells and Gerry Hamilton have news, notes, and nuggets from the big 5-star weekend for your Saturday evening.

Colin Simmons, EDGE, Duncanville (Texas)

The top-rated player in Texas and nation’s No. 1 EDGE is “really enjoying himself,” sources tell Inside Texas. Simmons and his family might be having the most fun of all the prospects, IT was told. “Nobody is having a better time than Colin,” source told Inside Texas. Simmons has maintained he’d like to make his decision in December, but there’s a sense he might not want to take it that far. The amount of college campuses he’s seen since January is long and distinguished, and sometimes recruits can get burned out by the process. Either way, this recruitment is trending Texas and Simmons is soaking up the ATX experience.

Jayden Jackson, DL, Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy

Texas is hosting the 6-foot-1.5, 295-pounder from Florida, and even though we’re hearing positives about the trip, we’re tempering expectations. Miami and Ohio State did tremendous jobs during their official trips, but Jackson likes Bo Davis. There’s also a feeling the family might want to follow Jackson after he signs, which isn’t totally uncommon. Texas certainly has a shot here, and with the d-line number likely four, Jackson would fit seamlessly. UT just has a few mountains to climb to claim the budding defender.

Parker Livingstone, WR, Lucas (Texas) Lovejoy

Hanging with hosts Colton Vasek and Michael Taaffe on Friday, Livingstone has a blast, Tonight, the 6-foot-3 On3 four-star will be spending time with Vasek, Taaffe, and Arch Manning. The Horns remain in the strongest position to land the metroplex wideout. The first Texas player to take him fishing might be his first real friend in the Forty Acres.

Nate Kibble, IOL, Humble (Texas) Atascocita

Kibble told Inside Texas that the official visit is going great.  “It’s great. Everyone here is like family already.”  One thing Texas fans have been asking since IT broke the news of the official visit is whether the 6-foot-3, 315-pounder is a take for the Longhorns. Inside Texas can say that the Houston area lineman is a take. He is being hosted by Andre Cojoe.

Daniel Calhoun, OT, Marietta (Ga.) Walton

Five-star On3 RPM pick entered
Texas knew coming into the weekend that the Georgia Bulldogs are real competition with Tennessee and Alabama in the mix. The visit so far has been very positive with the 6-foot-6, 360-pounder spending time with fellow target Daniel Cruz. Calhoun is also close with UT’s newest commit Gibson. They made official visits to Georgia, Tennessee, and Texas the same weekends.  Cruz is back in Austin with his mom and dad, who accompanied him at the Texas spring game in April.  Calhoun is being hosted by Freshman All-American Kelvin Banks. And yes, Texas loves Calhoun as a tackle prospect.

Notes:

The feeling is that the hill to climb to flip Mississippi State verbal Terrance Hibbler is a steep one. That is despite the mom, grandmother and siblings being on the trip.  Coming into the weekend, it was a three team race for Arlington (Texas) Martin IOL Makai Saina. The three were Texas, USC and Texas A&M. The feeling early on this weekend is that Texas or USC is the likely pick with the Aggies running third. The offensive line coach relationship is a big one, and Kyle Flood has given the Horns a realistic shot. Texas sophomore D.J. Campbell is hosting Saina.

Wardell Mack is being hosted by Gavin Holmes. Texas is thought to be ahead of Florida and FSU of the June official visits.  TJ Lindsey told IT that the visit is going well, “Definitely having a good time.” Texas A&M, Texas and Miami all with a shot with Auburn on the peripheral currently.

The visit is said to be going very well with Duncanville High DL Alex January. Texas is considered the favorite over LSU.  Jordon Johnson-Rubell is being hosted by Malik Muhammad.  Five-star DL Dominick McKinley, mom and brother are said to be having a tremendous visit. The mom likes the academic piece, and the closeness to home vs. some other options. Obviously, LSU is the in state and closest. Todd Bates has Oklahoma in the picture.

Cedric Baxter Jr. is hosting new Texas commit Jerrick Gibson.

Just popped over to IT... How many burner accounts does Eric have? Every other comment is from a "long-time lurker, first time subscriber" thanking the IT staff for being "the best in the biz".

Honestly looking forward to the IT police flipping their shit when all these new subs disobey their board rules.
