i dont think so. i dont think they beat many of the really good stephenville teams of the late 90's or the permian teams of the late 80s.

Briles' teams were impressive, but I believe they would be beaten.  I saw all four title wins by Stephenville, a 4A team and believe Westlake would have the guns to outscore their offense and could stifle them defensively.

I was a kid back then and watched Boswell beat Stephenville the opening game in 95, ending their 32 game win streak. The next year a 7-3 Stephenville knocked off state ranked 11-0 Boswell at Floyd Casey in the playoffs. We scrimmaged them every year after that and it was usually somewhat evenly matched (Boswell's DC in those days was Steve Wood).

Those teams would not compete with today's top 6A teams. 2013-2014 Allen would beat any other TXHS team in history imo

I hadn’t realized he died of cancer in 2010. Bailey was the NCAA D2 player of the year 3 times. He was voted 2nd his freshman year. That’s insane at any level.

Growing up in Corpus, it was always excellent getting to see Texas A&I play football, and Bailey was an amazing player.

So is Riley gonna move the fam down to Austin to take over for Daddy?

The word around the neighborhood is that Coach Salazar (the DC) will take over. Westlake’s defense over the last three years has clearly been the biggest driver of their success along with Klubnik the last two so it would make sense.

Coach Dodge, the alumni, current and former players, and most importantly the other existing coordinators and position coaches overwhelmingly support Salazar as the next head coach. He's been the unsung hero during this run - he deserves his shot.

That's what I've heard.  I think it's a no-brainer.

And that '88 Carter team was amazing.

Not sure where they rank but this Westlake team is in the neighborhood of the best teams of all time.

Average score for Westlake this year is 57-9. How many teams in state history have averaged a 48 point differential?

You saw them more than I did,  I think last years team was better than this years.

What do you think?

This year's team was significantly better on defense.  I think it's RB and WR play was also better.

I think you do have to account for just how bad Westlake's district is (outside of Lake Travis, that is).

Dominance in the championship game should be heavily weighted. Yates absolutely crushed Permian. 37-0 and it wasn't that close. The Lions had 20 tackles for loss in that game. Twenty. Not sure how many plays Permian ran total but 20 is a lot of TFLs.

Permian had a 33 game win streak I think. They walked on the feild with a lot of mojo

I think this years team was more complete than last years. The defense wasn’t as good last year and although he looked like total ass in the final Klubnik was deadly throughout the year. So many times I would think “why the fuck did he throw it there?” and the ball would float into a receivers hands for a big gain.  Last year he was good but not great.

You can’t have this discussion without including the 1983 Daingerfield team. They outscored their opponents 631-8 with the defense only giving up 6 points. That touchdown came on a long touchdown pass in a game against Carthage. They averaged 40 points a game running the power I.

The 88 Carter offense was nothing special. They may have had the greatest defense ever, but not the beat team. They were tied by Duncanville and had 4 other games decided by 7 points or less.

Did someone say Jessie Armstead?

Bowie won a couple playoff games and was solidly 3rd best but agree, the rest of the district really regressed this year

I wish Westlake would have went D1 this year to play North Shore and Duncanville.

If they could have stomped those teams as they did everyone else I feel like the pundits and people who cover the sport would be talking of them as a top 3 greatest high school team.

They might’ve won but I don’t think they were stomping either of those teams. If the state title game version showed up they would’ve straight up lost I would even say. Especially to North Shore. Duncanville I think Westlake could beat with an A- performance.

I think Westlake would never admit it, but after spending all year focusing on Katy and then curb-stomping them, it was really hard of our players to get up for Guyer. If it was North Shore, I think Westlake would have been focused. All credit to Guyer, they came to play.

Sorry if I'm being slow, but is this a repudiation of the asshat who engineered Fuller's departure?

He’s still a part of it all.  Got escorted out of Midlothian’s Stadium in September, the tapes of him and the old Supe got dropped and a DUI in October (?). Stepped down as board Pres but stayed on the board.  Can link the tapes if wanted.  They’re pretty insane.  Local paper put em on YouTube.

I can't imagine they'll get a quality coach with all that going on.

If they do it’ll be because they’re (new coach) completely clueless.  Don’t think it matters though, I’m guessing school board ex Pres has a guy he wants already.

The HS coaching circle is a very tight one. They all talk to each other. A lot. Only way someone wouldn’t know is if they came straight out of college or from another state. No one with any previous experience in this state will not know the backstory.

That's true, and someone without HC won't get the job. Might go to a guy nearing retirement looking to get that salary average up. But with batshit boards and sups you never know what might happen when there's an opening

Siap...   A grassroots social media movement to address the pay for Florida high school coaches has begun to combat losing top coaching talent to neighboring states.

9 HOURS AGO      DOUG SAMUELS

A coalition fighting for higher coaching pay has popped up for Florida coaches

Quote

Growing up in the midwest around coaches, I heard at least a handful of times every fall how no coach pursues high school coaching because of the pay that comes with it.

With some of the top high school jobs in Georgia and Texas known to pay six figures now, perhaps saying "few" coaches pursue the coaching profession at the high school level is a more accurate statement nowadays.

Now, granted, those types of jobs come with a different level of pressure and expectations, but the fact remains that coaching high school ball can provide a comfortable living for a select few.

One of the states that annually churns out some of the football talent for college and the NFL is Florida, and coaches there have been vocal about wanting more for their coaching stipends for a while now.

The stipend for Florida coaches is likely pretty comparable to what coaches in Michigan, or Ohio, or California get.

However, the main difference is those states aren't losing their top coaching talent to those nearby states like Georgia and Texas. In those states, administrations are more than willing to pay six figure salaries to coaches and are also willing to get rather creative with their coaching stipends.

A grassroots movement to address the issue has popped up with a new Twitter account and hashtag promoting calling themselves the Florida Coalition For Higher Coaching Salaries.

The account tweeted out a letter (see below) sharing their objectives and why they're passionate about their mission to get higher coaching salaries to high school coaches in The Sunshine State.

Time will tell whether the group is able to get some traction and make the waves required to enact change.

Wow.. says Florida HC gets only around 3-5K extra (above teaching pay) depending on county and experience.  Looking at Texas pay where over 200 coaches make six figures. Florida's stipend is about what our district pays for middle school football HC.

For those still curious about the Decatur debacle, they opened up the job.  New Supe and same board that pushed Fuller out are making the call on who it is.

Not surprised. Unless the interim coach won state this year, they were going to open it up. Think we see a whole new coaching staff next year, boys and girls.

It’s a cluster f

As a tribute to @Ricky's one-hitter, here is my final Westlake Sunshine Pumping post of the year. @Helobious was correct, as Chaps QB Cade Klubnik was named National System Player of the Year. The award is given to "the physically and mentally limited player who most benefits from being in a superior system."

Player-of-Year.jpg

And Chaps Coach Dodge was voted National Underdog Coach of the Year for his "success in leading players with physical limitations in regards to ethnicity, size and speed."

Coach-of-Year.jpg

I really enjoyed this season, as our rag-tag team of underdog misfits somehow managed to overcome huge disadvantages in resources to finish ranked #2 in nation by Max Preps. Here's to the David's of the world!

Joking aside, this 2021 squad is probably my favorite Westlake team and I would put this 3-year run up there as one of the greatest in Texas HS football history. And yes, we didn't play North Shore, but we beat them last year when they were arguably better. Cheers and health to you all in 2022. @Beau Vine thanks for your amazing contributions.

Always love reading these posts, and can't wait until next season to start reading them again. +Rep
