Gavin Newsom Recall

Recommended Posts

I know this is a Texas board, and I’m from Texas but just happened to get moved to California for my job like many other California based Surly posters.  Also, I’ve noticed a lot of posters that seem to want to move out of Texas, so the California continent could pick up some new members due to the dumb fucking politicians leading Texas at the moment.

Anyways. I just wanted to see if there is interest in discussing this California recall election.  I’m not the biggest Newsom fan, but he’s done better than most of his counterparts in battling Covid.  He’s got my support in this election!

As for random discussion points - what’s up with Caitlyn Jenner acting like she’s Trump?  Her campaign has to know that the GOP will never support a transgender individual.

Basically first question is recall yes/no. Second question is if yes, then who? Note that Newsom could be the preferred choice of the largest portion of voters and still lose. Larry Elder is also running for the office. Vote is Sept 14.

Can you walk us through this ?

looks to me like a vote against recall is a vote for newsom so the only way Newsome can lose is if a majority are for recalling him no?

Jenner isn’t even the GOP front runner. It’s Elder.

One solitary poll has shown the recall winning.  The rest have it losing. This is not California of 17 years ago or whatever.  Every person gets a ballot as well in the mail

I’m in the want to move out of Texas and politics are a factor crowd. California is gorgeous, but too expensive and it’s kind of the Democratic counter to Florida or Texas. The politics get a little loony, though not to the same degree as TX. I’d love NM but good luck finding work. CO or WA probably lead the pack. Could maybe talk me into Tucson, would feel better about leaving if I landed in a place where my vote wasn’t just running up the score.

As long as CA doesn’t stumble into a Republican governor then don’t much care what happens in the recall. Newsom seems like an asshole but I’m not sure what he’s done that’s recall worthy.

50%-1 want Newsom, he gets recalled. The vote is then a plurality vote for the replacement, none of which might get anywhere near 50-1.

Yeah, Newsom's people are asking that if you vote "no" on recall, to just leave the second question unanswered. I'm not sure I agree with that, as I think it makes sense to vote for least awful GOP candidate so you don't get stuck with an alt-right podcaster as the Guv of California.

He banged Guilfoyle. Gross.

I assume him not getting recalled is the most sane thing/optimal outcome, knowing almost nothing. But also (still knowing almost nothing) I don't like the guy. Seems like a true politician and I'm kinda joking about Guilfoyle and i don't know her history pre Trumpy shit but he married her.

I’ll vote no on the recall.  Not sure yet how I’ll vote on the second part.

Complete waste of time and money IMO.  I forgot of much of a sport recalls are in CA.

Perhaps a little preview of coming attractions in 2022 ads features a lot of footage from January 6 along with “hey, you want these nut-jobs in control? Vote no”

Dems need to vote no regardless and if they hate Newsom that much, run someone against him in the jungle primary next year. They’d end up locking out the Republicans and can knock him out for a new Dem in Nov 2022.

It’s having a nut brain in charge during COVID. It’s giving the GOP ammunition to use low turnout, off year recalls to gain power where they can’t win normally. It’s about who would pick Feinstein’s replacement if she can’t serve through 2024 (though the Lege has veto-proof majorities to push a bill through to force the replacement to be of the same party, but it’s a good way to attack the GOP/yes on recall)

yeah, the first issue is how easy it is to get the recall process moving in california.  that needs to be fixed, pretty much every governor has faced a recall push since reagan.

i've also heard to vote no and then leave the 2nd one blank.  this would be a slam dunk except that it's in the middle of sept during an off year and so many people will ignore it.  this would be dangerous if the ca gop could actually get serious and mobilize behind one ~not crazy candidate.  but that's not really happening.  as apathetic as the dems are about it (and a lot of them also don't love newsom), the gop can't seem to get organized.

yes, california went to biden by 5mm votes, but people forget that trump got more votes here than in any other state.

this spot runs nonstop on some channels i watch (especially during astros games/mlb.tv for some reason).

You mean he got more votes in a state with 10mm more people than the second largest state??

Yeah, I'd be shocked if Biden didn't make a stop in CA before this is all over. Hell, I think he should do a mini tour of the state. Everyone's approval rating is taking a Delta-related hit right now: Desantis, Biden, probably even Abbott. But unfortunately for Newsom, only he is up for recall. He mandated facemasks and several local jurisdictions went further. Trumpkins are pissed. The fact is that this recall will be closer than it should be. I fully expect it to be closer than the governor elections in Virginia because McAuliffe won't have suffered through Covid blowback as an incumbent.

Homework assignment to ask my parents which way they're leaning.

The ridiculous thing is that CA is going to do this all over again for the regularly scheduled election next year, and the Dem will be a lock. A Republican sneaking into the governorship for 16 months isn't going to move the needle at all in CA policy-wise (Dem lockdown in the leg and all other statewide positions), but fuck if I want to hear any GOP crowing.

A silver lining: I expect a proposition banning recall elections to be on the ballot soon.

yes, but only a hundred thousand more than he did in texas, which is only a couple hundred thousand more than he did in florida.  those numbers were close.

the point is that the rest of the country sees california as this safe blue stronghold, which it is.  but sometimes they forget that there are 6mm+ trump voters.  which means if they were organized and determined, they could actually get shit done.

The fact that they couldn’t even endorse one candidate was so bad. They’re such idiots.

Recieved my ballot yesterday, voted no and dropped it in the mailbox immediately.

Gavin's an asshole and a sleazebag, but he won the election and hasn't done anything to warrant a recall imo.

It's to easy to get anything on a ballot in this state, including a recall.20210813_132857.jpg20210813_132851.jpg

New England.  Plenty of decent and affordable places, lots of to do, four actual seasons, lots of nice scenery, trains you can hop on and actually go places within a reasonable amount of time.

I still have my plans of buying a place with a large pond/small lake, not far out of some little town, and building my own version of the Possum Lodge from Red Green.

Unless my math is wrong in that situation a majority would not want Newsom as gov

Yes, this is correct. They talked about it in pod save America. This whole thing is so stupid. He’s up for re-election NEXT YEAR. Just primary his ass if you don’t like him that much. Better than a maga psychopath.

Is this really close? I would think a clear majority don’t think he should be recalled, and many who are up in the air probably don’t like any of the alternatives

I don’t think it’s as close as polling indicates. How do you do a likely voter screen when everyone gets a ballot in the mail? There’s no commitment to showing up at a polling place and waiting in line.  Check no, drop in mailbox

Edit: The first wave of returns are 62-16 in favor of Dems in a state where they have a 47-24 edge in registration.  You’d think the “energized” republicans would be sending them back early in bigger numbers?

Here's my ballot:

I think it's very unlikely he gets recalled, so the second choice seemed meaningless.  I glanced at the long list of dumbasses, started to put it in the envelope, but then remembered:

McDonald's had an Olympics promotion in 76, randomnly handing out cards that would have different sports on them.  If an American won a gold in say, fencing, you'd get a free small fry.  Something bigger like boxing, maybe a cheeseburger.  The big daddy of them all was the decathlon with a free FUCKING BIG MAC.

A very young Mach 1 had that very card from a recently purchased Happy Meal, and watched Jenner run the 1500 meter? to win the gold, jumping up and down like a maniac the whole time.

So in the spirit of the dumbest political environment in my lifetime, here's to you Caitlyn Jenner, you decathlon winning dumbass publicity whore, a vote in exchange for my Big Mac.

Around that same time, a very young AUTF was growing up in San Diego where Mr Ray Kroc owned the local MLB team. Every Sunday the ticket stub was worth a free Big Mac if the Padres won. Of course they never won, the Padres never win.

If it was a double header on a Sunday it was still worth a Big Mac, even if they lost both. Luckily there were a lot more double headers in those days.

A Big Mac is still a guilty pleasure; A comfort food. I can't think of a single promotion that's ever been as successful with me personally. 45 years later and I still a sucker for a Big Mac.

A national talk show host recently told a story about her time working at the same station with Larry Elder in LA. When changing shows throughout the day, the station required hosts to make sure they compared notes so that the oncoming host would not repeat topics covered by the outgoing host. When the black executive producer was asked what Larry Elder discussed during his show, she said dryly; “the same thing he discusses everyday, how n!ggas ain’t shit.”

if you ever heard his show, you’d know this story is more than likely true.

And no bacon after Jan 1.

Referendum ballot measures are the suck.  Sounds like a solid idea on face value, but really brings out the stupid.
