just posting since I feel like it's 1 of the 2 that Hayes Fawcett had Tee'd up for us.

You think Fawcett was exicitedly tweeting about an edit for a guy who has been committed to Texas for a year? Okay then.

On the OTF live tonight CJ seemed bullish on James Johnson

He gets the standard "he plays a little too high" criticism that every hs DL ever does, but the athleticism and power are evident on his film. I'd celebrate him joining the class

So we’ve had 7 DTs drafted in the last 4 years correct?

Taquan Graham

Moro Ojomo

Keondre Coburn

 Byron Murphy

T’Vondre Sweat

Alfred Collins

Vernon Broughton

That is an insane sales pitch along with the NIL, playing for possible the best pass rush coach in Baker, and living in Austin.   This is Bama level DT recruiting this year.  Johnson, Simeon, Gurviel, Cleveland are all national elite level talents.  Cleveland is in, Gurviel has to one of the silents, Gerry says we are in it for Simeon, and Johnson doesn’t seem to be unrealistic either.  I say take whomever wants to come.  Process out Wells if need be.  I do like Berymon, dude is built like a keg.   Hell we may even get back in with Winfield later in the year…

Just insane DT recruiting honestly.  I haven’t seen anything like this since following Texas in the early 2000s.  Last year awesome but this is insane when you consider edge recruiting as well.

Well when you sound it like that I sound like a dumbass.

I took it as "I have 2 edits I was asked to make that are waiting to be posted." I didn't think far enough ahead to "its big time recruit related." Happy to be proved wrong though.

What would our ranking be if we removed the kicker, punter, and LS?

Just curious as to where we’d sit.

247 and Rivals rankings are based on cumulative score, so the specialists don’t hurt our ranking, just our avg, which their rankings aren’t based on.

I honestly don’t fully understand On3’s ranking system. They have an algorithm that’s based on averages, but it’s weighed to factor in blue chip players more. So the specialists probably are hurting our ranking there, but not by much.

A few quick notes from Texas' June 20-22 OV weekend

Jordan Scruggs (Horns 247)

Spoiler

A few quick notes from Texas' June 20-22 OV weekend

Jordan Scruggs (Horns 247)

We'll have a lot more in tomorrow's stampede and I'll have a few more OV recap stories out tomorrow but wanted to add a few quick notes:

- Texas is in a battle with Georgia for Chace Calicut ahead of his commitment that is taking place on Friday at an OT7 tournament in Florida. It's very close and I think Texas still has a shot to win out, but I'm leaning Georgia for the North Shore product heading into the week.

- It seems like Texas has expanded its lead for Katy Mayde Creek three-star LB Kosi Okpala. He will be announcing his decision date and his top four sometime in the next few days and the decision will take place in a ceremony at Mayde Creek in the first few days of July. Love my crystal ball in favor of Texas.

- Talked to some on the Georgia side of things that believes Tyler Atkinson's decision will end up coming down to the in-state Bulldogs and the Longhorns. I think Texas has a bigger need than Georgia at LB when you look at the LB room of each team, but the Bulldogs have had several LB dominoes fall elsewhere and are basically all-in on Atkinson to the point where if Atkinson didn't go to Georgia the Bulldogs would likely have to flip someone or extend a new offer or two.

- Still like the' chances of Keawe Browne ending up in the class over the chances of Heze Kent or Kaiden Prothro

- Still working to find out more but I still think it will be near impossible for anyone to keep Kaiden Prothro from ending up at Georgia.

- I was a bit skeptical heading into the OV because we almost never see top ranked prospects from the Southeast naming a school as their leader without games being played in some form or fashion, but Kendall Guervil's interest in Texas is very genuine and the Longhorns are trending with Guervil having announced his July 2nd commitment date while he was still officially visiting Texas last night.

- Still working to find out more on Calvin Thomas but with what we heard going into the official visit it felt like Thomas would likely eventually turn into a Texas commit if the Longhorns pushed on the OV, and it sounds like they made a push. He did tweet about committing soon just a few days before his Texas OV, so we would not be shocked at all if Thomas committed to the Longhorns soon.

Again, we will have more tomorrow and in the coming days.

Yeah if we get Guervil and Johnson, I wonder if someone bails or gets told to look around.  Dare I say, I'm worried about the (DL) numbers??

Just watched James Johnson's hudl.  He's the most explosive of all the DL guys that have committed or we're after.  By far the best pass rusher of the bunch.

For those too lazy to type out "James Johnson Northwestern Miami HUDL:" http://www.hudl.com/v/2QtWfv

I like the first play where he throws a guard at the QB and his first step is crazy good

We expected Vodney Cleveland, the defensive tackle from Birmingham, to announce for the Longhorns on Saturday. He left Austin a week ago Sunday knowing that he would eventually pledge to Texas.

It’s a big addition for the Horns at defensive tackle.

But the commitment of Richard Wesley, the five star defensive end from Los Angeles, took us all by surprise on Sunday afternoon.

We knew Wesley liked the Longhorns and his family had Texas ties, despite a prior commitment to Oregon. However, we didn’t know he was on the brink of committing.

In a matter of 24 hours, Texas added two blue chip prospects to a defensive line class that could be shaping up as the nation’s best.

Outside of Cleveland and Wesley, the Longhorns continue to pursue Damari Simeon (who announces June 27), Kendall Guervil (who said he will announce his decision on July 2) and James Johnson at defensive tackle, and Trenton Henderson and Jamarion Carlton at edge. Lamar Brown and Bryce Perry-Wright are edge/tackle mixes.

Whether it’s at edge or on the interior, it doesn’t matter. Texas is piecing together one of its most impressive DL classes in recent memory, perhaps in the last 25 years.

**

Interestingly, Johnson left the visit and told reporters that Texas was quickly becoming DLU.

I guess I hadn’t thought about it that way, but the results from the NFL draft backs that assertion up, at least to a degree.

In the last three drafts combined, seven DLs from Texas have been selected.

They say football games are won up front, well that appears to be where Texas is focusing a large portion of its efforts.

**

The next 7-14 days will be huge for the Longhorns recruiting efforts. Not just at defensive line, but at every position on the board.

As many as 15 elite recruits could come off the board just in that narrow window.

Texas obviously won’t get all of these players. But they should get their fair share.

Texas sits at 15 commitments overall.

Left on the board (players who have visited Texas but are undecided):

RB Ezavier Crowell

WR Kaydon Finley

WR Jalen Lott

TE Heze Kent

TE Kaiden Prothro

TE Keawe Browne

OL John Turntine

OL Malakai Lee

OL Felix Ojo

OL Zaden Krempin

DL Kendall Guervil

DL Damari Simeon

DL James Johnson

DE Jamarion Carlton

DE Trenton Henderson

DE Jake Kreuk

DE/DT Bryce Perry-Wright

DE/DT Lamar Brown

LB Xavier Griffin

LB Tyler Atkinson

LB Kosi Okpala

LB Calvin Thomas

LB Brayden Rouse

S Chace Calicut

S Davon Benjamin

CB Samari Matthews

just curious—what happened with Jaylen Lott that shifted things in here?

Surly Horns is saying he’s gone, but some recruiting sites still have Texas trending in a positive direction. What’s the real story?”

From what I've pieced together.  Oregon and USC are throwing a big NIL and Texas instead is deciding to utilize big dollars towards the trenches and LB.   Outside of NIL, Lott seems to want to get away and do his own thing.

Who do we think are the 4 silents? (I think it's 4 but could be wrong)

Guervil

Carlton

I think it's 5 silents at this point. Wesley was a surprise...

At least according to what we heard on OTF. It was 3 "hi's" coming into the weekend and Gerry posted 3 more over the weekend. Cleveland was one of those 3 heading into the weekend.

Those two and the three of the four below would be my best guess.

Okpala

Ojo

Calvin Thomas

Chase Calicut

Is it possible the Cali TE was one before the staff wouldn't take a commit?

I have no idea.  I would imagine this staff isn't taking commitments until they see the players in person.  Not sure if they ever measured/weighed him in a camp setting.  I don't think he's one of the silents.

USC passed on him and he seemed pretty desperate to commit to us right after.  With that said, I don't know shit.  He may commit today for all I know.

I'm not a defense wonk, but I don't like that the military gave the entire playbook for the attack in a PC.  Why?  All we need to know is that they did the deed and the results.  Does anybody need a sales job that they are good and have good stuff?

Thoughts from the Georgia side, per Wolk, for a few targets:

-Jae Lamar (RB) decides later this week between UGA, Clemson and Miami. Georgia had four OVs from TBs this cycle: Lamar (from Georgia), Hiter, Crowell and Cooper. UGA does not expect to land the other 3 and the eggs are in the Lamar basket. Miami mods, who are often idiots and laughably wrong, believe that Miami is landing both Lamar and Crowell. Regardless, UGA being out for Cooper and Crowell is news to me.

-Georgia thinks it’s landing Calicut, per intel from a source close to Calicut at North Shore. Why does Texas ever fucking bother recruiting that shitstain program? What a fucking waste.

-UGA seems to think it is out on Malakai Lee, but holding out hope.

-They’ve lost confidence in landing James Johnson.

That Lee news is the most significant and pleasant bit, imo.

Honestly, I like this approach of building the lines through HS recruiting and getting the skill players from the portal. Though we've had to dip into the portal to make up for the Bo Davis experience.
