Jones played as a freshman in 2018 and I guess was still in school there despite not being on the team. The guys he killed were came in as freshmen in 2020. Doesnt really make sense for him to be a victim of hazing from the guys he killed

Maybe they turned him in for hazing. Either way, I'd like to stop speculating on it.

Always interesting to see what falls into the acceptable level when it comes to Surly making jokes about people dying. @Parliament cracks a joke about 3 people dying and catches a temporary ban from @hayden_horn. When 150+ die in Seoul the first two replies were "They did the mash?" and "That's a lot of lost seouls", and both posts received only positive rep and were marked as popular posts . Not suggesting that Js1 or Bevo needed to catch a ban but Surly group-think seems pretty fickle given the established tone of reaction to death, unless it's only funny when weird looking foreigners die.

The selective outrage on this site always amuses me. @hayden_horn banning Parliament for that comment is some 5*  bullshit considering the off color humor that gets posted here on the regular. I guess football players should be treated differently than non football players. But even so, is hayden also going to ban Deej? To be clear, Im not in favor of either catching a ban, I'm just curious why one post is worthy of a ban, and not the other.

i do my best yall.

not everything is cut and dried or codified in some way that i can run every comment on this website through "moderator bot" for appropriate levels of distastefulness.  if it's just me wondering, generally, i leave well enough alone. but if i'm responding to a report and i can see the context of the thread...

i dunno. i do my best with my judgement. i'd rather not suspend anyone, but this is a community with self-policing standards and pretty hands-off rules as far as things go. parliament caught a 24 hour suspension. it's not the end of the world for him or anybody, but i'm sensitive to these remarks, so i'll take it under consideration.

Read that the player in question may have been the victim of hazing? Idk. Whatever the cause it's just so awful to hear.

I thought it was the other way around, he was the hazer and why he was no longer with the team.

I'm sure there is a ton of conflicting shit out there right now.

The better way to phrase that would have been, "I can see I am too late to cavalierly work in a joke"

It's confusingly worded considering his day job is actually that of a supporter of King Charles I.  And you know how the King was a stickler for promptness.

Maybe the moderators don't want every thread about people dying to be all full of jokes and constant attempts to one-up each other with edginess. Like idk, maybe they care about the perception of the website and such in the NIL world. That's all i got.

Just a small drop in the bucket that is our perception problems, if that is actually a concern. Half this site is offensive to someone.

Sure, and you can never make us not make jokes about stuff. But when it's like the third reply of the thread, the day after the event, to me it is more about "oooh look how edgy i am" than a legit attempt at humor. Maybe make a separate thread. Or just wait a few days.

Meh, I take the Jeselnik approach.  It's never too soon, provided it's the right "venue/audience."  A prominent thread on our most prominent forum that recruits and their families read regularly (even non-athlete kids coming to UT-Austin), and it's also the only story the whole college football world is talking about today (and for the next few days), that ain't the place for it.  Make the joke, just somewhere else on the board.

I am constantly surprised, but I guess I shoulnd't be any longer, how many parents of potential students read this board.  Mainly the football board, but I'm sure the dads wander around to other forums after the family goes to bed.  So I think most folks on here are cool with moderator activity being a little more stringent here than on other less-traveled forums.

To be fair, the Jeselnik approach does not give a rats ass about the right “venue/audience.”

I don’t post much here but I have lurked heavily since TOS. The draw to this site for me is the humor (good, bad, distasteful) that is tolerated. There are a lot of Jeselniks on this site and just like him they sometimes swing and miss.

Lulz, this is probably the worst take yet. I have no doubt that parents of recruits might stumble across this website. A website where a good number of us are calling Sark a fucking idiot and a failure. There are also plenty of other threads/comments calling out & criticizing specific players by name. But yeah, a thread about about the UVA tragedy is gonna make parents re-evaluate their decision to send their kids to UT. And then you follow up with " the joke is fine, just put in on another forum." God forbid our recruiting suffer from this tragedy in Virginia.

And my recollection of Jeselnik's "thoughts and prayers" rant indicates that no, you dont take the Jeselnik approach. People complaining about Parliaments comment are basically the same as the people saying "my thoughts and prayers." Especially when the comments that were so offensive were made on a website where similar comments are made EVERY day.

I would think that a mass casualty event involving college football student-athletes might hit a little closer to home for parents of high school senior recruits as opposed to other tragedies around the country is all.  Parents expect to hear criticism of the coaches on football fan sites, it'd be weird if we didn't have multiple posts calling Sark names.  That'd be more like TexAgs where they are delusional.

Different shootings ring truer for different people.  i got depressed about Sandy Hook for a week after and was in no mood for jokes, but I didn't have young kids then so now I probably wouldn't bat an eye if I read a shitty joke about it and wouldn't want to beat Alex Jones to death with his own arms if I saw him.  Not a day goes by I don't think about Uvalde when my daughter heads off to elementary school.  If I read jokes about it online, it would effect me a lot more than jokes about another tragedy.  Point was I think it's fine the bad taste shit is left off a football board for now.  Or not, I don't really give a shit either way.  It won't effect recruiting, I'd just be viewing this UVA tragedy through a different lens if I had a 17 yo college-bound linebacker just getting home from school right now.

Nice, personal perspective from a prof on two of the guys

It's good to see that prof testify for his students.  I know professors don't always have the closest relationships with athletes, but in this case, he had a genuine affection for those two guys.

A month for that?  That sounds extreme even for Katy.  I don't know anybody that would have an issue with that joke considering how horribly we were all treated up there that night.  And not to sound like an insensitive dick (me?  never!)...but my buddy and I got assaulted three different times in Columbus and we were both about 29, over 6' tall, and in fighting shape back then.  I'm guessing somebody that looks/sounds like the Agnors probably get mercilessly harassed and heckled and shoved around.  reminds me of a time a few years earlier, had a "Dick's Last Resort" manager on Riverwalk tell us the schpeel about how you can say anything (except racist shit) and they won't kick you out.  She went to A&M a few years before my college days.  Before our first round of beers got to the table, I was already being escorted out.

This hazing by younger guys once off the team story is getting stranger and stranger.  Is that a thing at UVA, like reverse hazing where the younger guys fuck with the older guys to boost their confidence or some bullshit?

You must have been at He's Not Here three years earlier too.

Just saw this. Fucking sad. A frosh player for whatever reason decided it was best to take out people for whatever selfish motive he had. RIP, to those kids and I hope their families will be ok in time. God this is awful

The asshole didn’t time travel. He was a freshman in 2018.

I made a comment about Bob Stoops needing to sit in his running car in his closed garage in 2008, after we were left out of the championship in favor of the OU team we beat by 10 on a neutral field (that naturally shit the bed). Got a permaban for it.

Katy offered to let me back if I would apologize. Fuck that fat ho.

Ummm.  I'm not really a thoughts and prayers person.  So you can kiss my ass.

I let him (I guess him) know that I thought his post was offensive.  I even said he and whoever else could neg me if they wanted.  I didn't like the post and let him know.  I don't know about banning him.  Not my call.  That's up to others and certainly wasn't my goal when I called him out.  I rarely neg, and am not going to neg you. I've done it maybe 5 times total. I did for his post.

But you can go fuck yourself on your comments about anyone commenting about his post.

Yeah, Katy picked really weird shit to ban people over.  I mean, I get being inconsistent here and there with time-outs, suspensions, account locks, whatever.  Some post catches you sideways on the wrong day and you shut 'em down for 48 hours, fine---it's your house, your rules.  But she'd forever ban people for really innocuous shit.  And now it's just her and her friends on a Longhorn version of TexAgs over there.

But Hayden's the boss here, his call to suspend for 24 hours.  Nobody really gives a shit in the end.  If I had a kid the ages of these young men or far away at a college campus, this would certainly hit me harder or different.  A plane crashes somewhere far away, the jokes are already posted within hours.  But a plane crashes in Texas, people are just more sensitive to bad humor.  It's the proximity, but also when victims are similar to you or your loved ones, no matter where they are, it stings a bit more.

Not much new information in that 4pm news drop.  But he was already under "supervision" as a threat in the past.  And I suspect this will once again reboot our conversations about mental health, screening for danger, etc.  What it's also very likely going to do is reframe conversations about hazing on college campuses.  We talk a lot about the tragic deaths of alcohol, drugs, physical accidents, etc. and how dangerous that is for young people.  But this brings to light, "What if the hazing is physically harmless but mentally breaks somebody.  and that somebody has access to lethal firepower and wants revenge?"  Not saying that's exactly what happened here, and I have no answers...but that dialogue is coming to college campuses in the wake of this.  Of that, I have zero doubt.

Also who in their right mind was posting on hornfans by 2005? Haha

2005 was the prime year of prime years. The success (having the USC vs great armies of history being mentioned on ESPN, etc.) seemed to go to their head.

But it led to the scat site a few years later, and then tree fiddy led us here, and now you know the rest of the story.

What was the site that ran from about 2008-2012 that was more like myspace themed?  More interactive social media than message board.  There were boards/forums there but it was probably geared towards a younger demographic?  Some kinda squirrel theme?  And then some LFZ loyalists trying to resurrect that brand directly, or it was some closely named off-shoot around that same time?  Then the proliferation of the more impersonal ones from 24-7 nation, SB nation, rivals, et. al.

Anyway, haven't been on hornfans in at least a decade but by my best guess, it's gotta be getting close to 25 years old now?  Gotta give 'em credit for that.  I think the first time I saw it was 2000 or 2001, and it had already been around a few years.  I should remember the Wheeler/Agnor split-up story since Bob told it once a tailgate, but i can't for the life of me remember how both sites started?  Ah well, some stories best lost to time.

Parliament started a thread awhile back laughing at a bunch of immigrants getting crushed to death by a semi truck. I'd like to think that his history of being a douchebag played into the ban, he fucking sucks and doesn't need your white knighting

If you follow some replies and go down the Twitter rabbit hole there are some comments from the suspect’s grandparents that he was being bullied. Can’t verify any of that. There are also other rumors as well.

That was my first thought this morning as well, even with the age differences. Football player targeting football players? It’s something within the program obviously.

You must be new here. There were a couple of jokes about Jake Ehlinger’s death, but it was decided that was too far. So, yes.

Quit crying. This is a known board of assholes. Sometimes it’s over the line here. There usually is no line.
