Texas lands former Stanford punter Ryan Sanborn from the Transfer Portal

The Texas Longhorns solved a major need earlier today on special teams with the addition of former Stanford punter Ryan Sanborn from the Transfer Portal. Sandborn started all four years at Stanford and also handled kickoff and occasional field goal duties for the Cardinal.

Sanborn finished with Pac-12 Honorable Mention honors twice during his four years in Palo Alto, finishing with a career average of 41.8 yards per punt with a long of 68 yards. The transfer addition also had an impressive inside the 20 to touchback ratio at Stanford of 64/7 with no touchbacks at all this past season.

Sanborn becomes the first commit for the Longhorns from the transfer portal during the winter window.

SPECIALISTS

State of the position: Bert Auburn had a productive first season replacing Cameron Dicker, finishing 19/24 on the year with a season long 49 yarder against Alabama. Daniel Trejo took over punting duties early in the season as a graduate transfer from Texas Wesleyan in his final season of eligibility.

Portal need (1): Early sourcing is that Texas will look to add a punter with proven FBS production out of the portal.

The Longhorns will continue to be active in the portal this offseason and Horns247 Transfer Portal Central is the place to follow all the action. Tidbits on players expected to enter or leave the portal, sourced NIL updates, new articles with intel surrounding the portal, and much more will be consistently added in the moderators-only comments and article itself to provide an easy chronological rundown of the Longhorns portal efforts.

There are also multiple new key features regarding the Transfer Portal including the introduction of Transfer Portal Windows and the removal of the 25 initial counter limit, as 247Sports' Chris Hummer mentioned in his 'Mass Chaos' FBS staffer survey.

"This is the first cycle with transfer portal windows, which stretch from Dec. 5 to January 18 for the FBS with another period from April 15-30. No longer can players enter the portal whenever they please, though there are always exceptions to the rules. Graduate transfers and players whose head coaches have left the program are not subjected to these guidelines, which is why athletes have already started entering the portal.

Schools are no longer limited to signing just 25 initial counters per cycle. This means programs can aggressively rework their rosters to sign up to their 85-scholarship limit. Many across the country believe that this will lead to players being run off rosters. The NCAA also passed a rule that schools are required to keep transfer athletes on scholarship through the completion of their eligibility clock or until they complete their undergraduate degree. This means there’s more risk than ever in taking an undergraduate transfer, because they’re stuck on the roster no matter what."

Pretty sure Hudson's info in article is wrong about April spring portal dates...

Found this:  "The second window will be instituted from May 1-15 so players can enter the transfer portal after spring camp."

…it only took me about 15 posts to learn that “P” did not stand for “Pitcher”.

🤘

As a lifelong Padres fan, thank you for reminding me what a miserable fool's errand my baseball fandom is.

Also, 🤘.
