Paul Finebaum Unsigned By ESPN, Drama Builds In SEC-ESPN Relationship

In an era of high-priced free agents across the sports landscape, one media free agent is creating a stir at ESPN and the SEC — Paul Finebaum remains unsigned as his contract nears expiration next month. Due to what multiple sources have described as incompetence bordering on malfeasance, ESPN has so bungled its negotiations with the SEC Network and ESPN commentator that Finebaum is seriously contemplating offers elsewhere and has let ESPN know that if his deal is not completed in short order he will not be present at SEC Media Days in Atlanta when they begin on July 16th.

According to sources Finebaum, who declined comment to Outkick, was told in October of last year by then-president of ESPN John Skipper not to worry about his soon to expire contract. Nine months later, with limited contact from ESPN executives, Finebaum has now reached the limits of his patience with the network and is preparing to depart. That’s despite substantial efforts by an increasingly frustrated SEC office over ESPN’s inability to get the deal done.

If you listen to the hayseeds that call in to his Sirius show, it is freaking high comedy.  They make Joe Dirt sound like William Shakespeare.

You can't beat some of the comments by the callers with two roman candles with spinning sparklers, it is to be enjoyed... As Hurtlocker says: "It just means more"...

It's great for SEC Network because he is just simulcasting a radio show every day for what 3 hours?  The production costs are small and he's got "live" content.

I wonder if LHN ever thought of simulcasting Bucky & Erin in the morning?

If he's so valuable and ESPN is SOOOOO incompetent here, then why hasn't Fox swooped in and signed his ass?

Oh, what's that? No one really gives a shit about this guy and he adds no real value?

You can be pissed off all you want Paul, but you're being ghosted-as-fuck and you're not desirable enough to find another date. Too bad.

Wait, what?  Why should the conference care one way or the other?

So much this. It’s a wonderfully disgusting yet gorgeous shit-show of bama and auburn hayseeds.

My best guess is because he's, obviously, a S-E-C guy and fox sports only has big 12,pac 12 and big 10 football games.

He is a million times worse than Finebaum, difficult as that is to believe.

FOX doesn't have SEC, they don't care; if they did, they would swoop in and sign asshat Travis, he is much more aligned with FOX as a whole.  CBS SPORTS is a far more likely landing spot for Finebaum.

True. I forgot about the fact that there are no SEC games on Fox.

I may have to commit seppuku if Gary Danielson and Paul Fienbaum get together on a regular basis.

Clay Travis doesn't break news. I suspect this is posturing from Finebaum camp. Whatever ESPN offers will be far better exposure for him than anyplace else. He'll happily sign whenever they get around to it.

Being that the Disney-Fox merger was approved yesterday, (while the mouse needs to sell off the 22 RSN's from the searchlight) it makes this issue all that much more impactful...

Think about it, overnight the value of all of those RSN's became that much more valuable as bidders from Amazon/ Comcast/ AT&T/ Youtube ect., could all find value in owning a portion of live sports programming, even if it's only regional content...  That makes shows as PF just that much more appealing in the ability to place as an "anchor brand" for that individual network...

It doesn't sound like ESPN has botched anything, it sounds like they simply don't give a shit.

What would it look like for the B1G to sign Finebaum to the BTN..? It would expand his footprint from being boxed in as just a "southern talk show host"...
