Bobby Layne's first start was for the Texas Longhorns baseball team on March 13, 1944, in an intra-squad game as a freshman pitcher, followed by his first official collegiate game on March 25, 1944, where he threw a complete game 15-strikeout, 3-hit victory against Southwestern University

"Bobby Layne never lost a game; he just ran out of time."

Arch's struggling is due to not KNOWING knowing the playbook. When you truly know the playbook you know which receivers will be open simply by watching what the defense is morphing into. Arch is still watching routes and then looking to see where the defense is late. You could see that on the TE TD pass up the left side from the endzone camera. Arch is watching the TE then looks around to see where the defense is after. That process should be reversed. Because of this he is holding the ball an awfully long time and then making a rushed throw late. That's why his mechanics are breaking down. When the game slows down, and he truly knows where his receivers will be, his mechanics won't break down. Hopefully that's when he starts layering the football.

Yea he was processing that throw for an eternity

I agree with this. It also raises the question how you can be going on year 3rd year in the system and not know it like he should. Idk if that’s coaching or arch or both

The difference is offensive line. We had a lot of talent on the O-line but but Williams and Campbell were the kind of guys who get drafted on potential. They rotated turns on getting penalties and being turnstiles all season. Williams let more guys get past him without getting hands on them then I can remember ANY right tackle doing in all the dark years and that's saying a lot.

They need to get Brooks off that suspension and see what he can do because Baker has been abysmal. Stroh is right there with him to as not needing to see the field.

After listening to the filmguy's latest video, I'm changing my perspective on Arch.  We as a fan base need to give Arch some time to develop.  He's only started 4 games ever.  Now what can teams do to help a young inexperienced QB?  It needs a good run game with a good defense.  That's usually enough to win most games.  I'm still unsure about our RBs and run game but we need them to improve asap.  Can't have a repeat of last year.  I'm jealous of Oregon's run game right now.

Our RB'S are fine. Baxter is a three down back, who can be elite. We just need Sark to establish the run game, and we need Wisner back. Oregon has a great offensive roster, Oklahoma State is a shell of itself, and Gundy is a shell of what he used to be. I wouldn't gauge their win as something to judge against ours. Montana State literally scored more points on their defense than Okie Lite. The only thing I'm truly jealous about them is they have Dakorian Moore, that's it. Our defense would bring them back to earth.

Once Clark gets more established against faster competition, the better. He shows he has the tools, we just need to see more. Gibson probably is done. Simon is supposed to be the real deal. We're fine at RB and I wouldn't trade our backs for Oregon's no matter what. They have one elite WR in Noah Whittington. Moore will be next year or so, but they haven't played anybody yet. They had such an easy schedule, just like Ohio State, it is pathetic. The only real team they play is Penn State, and I guess Indiana?

I have and at least Baker got a hand on him. Williams flat out whiffed. In year 3 btw. Keep that in mind. He may have been the best bodied worst right tackle I've ever seen. Hope that makes sense.

Given where he landed in the draft and what a starting tackle goes for in college, I would bet he wishes he was back here too.

No.. Go back and look at the play. Endries was initially picked up on the TE leak by #9. Arch looked to the RB in the flat for a quick second and the defender left Endries opening him up for TD. It was nice QB play. Ran that play vs OSU for a big gain in the playoffs. TE leak has been a killer for Sark, but this play takes a long time to develop

Yeah, to see his eyes darting all over said everything. If you know your guy's route, you are locked in on them and come back to the route when it's go time.

As far as the playbook not being ingrained, not totally sure. Some kids don't learn by studying. Maybe he thought he knew it but it is clear he is reacting and not anticipating, which is why his mechanics are all over the place. Because those are "oh shit he's open throw it now!" throws. You can see when he is comfortable his mechanics don't break down. It's not an injury. It's simply not having full command of that book. The shoulder thing is simply him getting the jersey material loose so he can throw. Part of me wants to see if he is doing it on throwing downs because if he is defenses will take note.

Wtf...

I was disappointed last week but not surprised. That was a tough game against a good defense in a hostile environment with the weight of the world on his shoulders.

This week I thought he looked like a great, young QB. Just keep throwing the ball and let him run the full offense until we score 50. He will continue to progress and be the player we all hope he will be. The more reps, the better.

I think the team looks really talented and will be competing for a NC at the end of the season. The D was dominant and the offense looked much better. Loved the way Baxter ran and Clark looks like he has a little something. It's going to be a fun season!

Yeah, agree this week he looked more like a young QB.  I was watching Bryce Underwood yesterday pretty hard and he looked worse.  Granted, he's younger than Arch, but still in his first year of starting.  And I don't think blOwU is the equivalent of tOSU.

And, it's probably unfair and unrealistic to judge the other skill players this early with a new QB.

I won't say I have no concerns, but I think they probably resolve pretty well by the end of the season.

After the season doctors are going to evaluate him and see if amputation will be needed. Perhaps he'll get a robotic arm attached post surgery for removal.

Shit dude, it's call game reps. You can't ever replicate them in practice. It took Young 2 full seasons of them to become the icon he was in 2005.

VY was pretty damn good in 2004. Everyone talks about 4th and 5 against USC for the title, but nobody remembers the 4th and 18 against Kansas in 2004. Without that play we lose the game and don’t go to the Rose Bowl against Michigan.

No no... you aren't allowed to comment stuff like that. You have to pretend like Arch isn't already an improvement over the last guy that took snaps here.

Well, if I step back and look at the big picture, there is one thing I love about Manning!  He actually scores enough points leading the offense, to allow the backups to come in and get some reps.  Last year under Ewers, we would manage to keep games much closer than they should have been, and therefore, Manning got a LOT fewer live reps last season, than most folks (Me) expected.  Manning got the majority of his snaps last year because Ewers was injured, rather than mop up duty.

My hope is that this season we can indeed blow out the folks we are supposed to blow out.  Simply so that whoever our backup QB is going to be when called upon gets some live game reps.  To me, getting whoever the back QB reps with live game pressures is always going to be a priority for me.  Simply as it's difficult for any QB to survive a complete college season. and it's a lot better to get reps when a little is on the line than everything on the line.

You see, I still remember in the NC game when Garrett Gilbert was throwing darts when Colt McCoy went down that were simply much hotter delivery than our receivers were accustomed to.  And they were not caught.  Was this because Gilbert was too excited? Making the balls hot?  Or was that just how hot his throws were normally?  Who the fuck knows?  We don't know because we did not get our backup QB enough reps in live games.   Getting your backup QB live reps, if you want your team to TRULY compete for the top honors, you need a backup QB that has taken live reps in real games with the first team receivers. IMHO.

Anyhow, Manning is on a good trajectory, and maybe, just maybe, we can do our jobs well enough this year to get those very valuable reps to whoever might be forced to step in if Manning goes down.

When we look at what it takes to develop a championship level team, usually what you are looking for a quality two deep, where you do not have much fall off, moving to the second man up.  The one spot that seems to often be overlooked it that backup QB.  Getting that backup early (and often) live experience, and be the difference between winning and losing later in the season.  My prayer is Manning continues to put up enough points to get out backup QB's some quality reps. That's insurance to me!

Fify

Back in the late nineties I was in Lubbock on business (yeah, I know) and had just finished 18 at Lubbock Country Club. Two of us guys sat down at a corner table in the 19th hole. The locker room attendant politely said, "That's Mr. Lane's table. We don't use that anymore." Lane had been dead for years by then, but we said, "No problem," and found another table.

One of the most important plays in our modern era. That game was…maddening and scary as a game could get. That broken tackle saved our asses and season.

Incredible moment for sure.  But that was Vince's 17th start.  He led us to getting shutout for the first time in 23 years just a few games prior to that.  You can't pick VY's best moments and compare them to Arch's worst.

Arch went 19-30 vs SJSU. PFF gave Texas 4 drops in the game (I remember 2), so I was not nearly as terrible as people  are making it out to be..  The Wingo thing is still annoying, but this is not brutal. Keep in mind Texas is going downfield a lot more this year. Part of that is scheme and part is Manning, who has an excellent 50% comp rate on deep balls so far.

I think it's important to have reasonable expectations. At this point let's hope Arch turns out to be as good as Chance Mock. He has a ways to go for that.

Wrong.  Mock self sacked and dropped his eyes in the pocket more than Ewers did.  The worst pocket presence I have ever seen from a Texas QB.

Arch is damn good at avoiding pressure and keeping his eyes down field.
