MAGA = Christian Nationalism = Theocratic Fascism

They're all one and the same.

Yes.....but modern religious movements built around a single charismatic leader don't have a great track record of surviving the death of that leader.  The Branch Davidians aren't that much of a thing anymore (survivors still are, but they aren't gathering members like Koresh was able to do).

All of the poisonous things that lead to Christian Nationalism and Theocratic Fascism are there, they always have been and always will be.  But the catalyst for coalescing those things into a powerful movement is a personality/figure.  Trump has a magical touch.  Nobody else trying to capture that same lightning in a bottle can even come close.  When Trump dies, the catalyst will be gone.  The pieces will still be there.  The movement will not "die," but it will not be able to project itself with the prominence that it has today.

It's a cult until he is dead, then it becomes a religion. Thanks for coming to my ted talk

That's because those cults' organizations didn't extend beyond the leader.

THIS cult already has multiple organizations co-opted behind it. The power and influence networks to make this a full fledged religion are already there, in place, ready to take the reins and demand tribute in His Unholy Name in his absence. Churches, the GOP, media organizations, extremely wealthy patrons... IT'S ALREADY THERE. Complete with many individuals hungry for power, any one (or more) of whom can fill in the power void and use the name of Trump to get the flock in line.

I'm not talking about something that will happen; it already has. insert Ozymandias from the Watchmen quote here

On a sidenote, I’ve noticed on X that a lot of bots, and or Magas are going off on Mike Johnson, and calling him just another Paul Ryan, and a neocon at heart.

Johnson should agree to a new speaker vote and have about 10 of his buddies vote for Hakeem Jeffries. The deal would be to pass funding bills for government debt and a Ukraine. After that is done they have another speaker vote.  I think enough MTG types would be so angry that Johnson will not get enough votes to win, which might lead to Jefferies become a speaker again.   I will now put down the vape pen.

In addition, the militia/patriot movement that spun up into the Jan 6th events will not simply disappear despite the arrests of some individuals; there are too many that still believe that violence is the way, and the internet is still the food that nourishes their discontent with life. They're in every state and while many will not act, it doesn't take many to wreak the terror they hope will restore whatever fantasy they have about justice for all the perceived wrongs against them.

I really think that people won't/can't grasp how powerful Trump and Trumpism are because it's completely irrational.  It doesn't make sense.  It's like asking you to accept that sometimes, things fall up instead of down.  It seems absurd and preposterous, but the reality is that somehow, the laws of physics don't apply to this particular thing.  Overcome your bias towards rationality, and accept the evidence in front of your eyes.

Trumpism and MAGA don't decline materially unless and until Trump dies.  Trumpism and MAGA are forces of insane irrationality, and they do not follow any laws of rational thought or outcomes.  Their ascendancy is fueled by one source, and until that source is gone, they will continue to roar.

I think that Trump’s death will see the aggie roller coaster. They will all pledge to go forward against the deep state because Trump died to protect them from woke Libs , and junior will try to be the new face going forward.  Meatball Ron and Marge and Teddy Cancun will all try to step in the void to oppose Don Junior, but the passage of time that core group of Maga idiots will choose sides between the pretenders to the throne.  Once that happens, they will not win elections, and they will be too busy fighting each other or get too frustrated and drop out, snd will not be much of a force going forward.

Pockets of these maga idiots will continue to give city councils and school boards a problem, but I see their national influence waning.

This.  This is what will happen.  Lots of people will try to fill his shoes, all will fail spectacularly.  There will be continuing shit as you note.

It's still shitty, and problematic....but the threat will no longer be existential.

They could pull the plug on him at any moment. Instead they let him take the nomination and put his family in charge of the party. He obviously still offers them value. Chaos and destroying the rule of law in general comes to mind.

They didn’t have a choice about who is in charge but the fact that the GQP coffers are pretty lean and Lara is begging MAGA to send in even just $5 is very telling.

Bruh imagine betting on Ron DeSantis as the favorite to the the next President of the United States at literally any point in time.

Supporting DeSantis or Haley was about having somebody in place if the legal stuff turbofucks Trump, or lining up early behind the 2028 nominee.  DeSantis managed to ruin his future.  Haley is still in it for 2028.

For every evil billionaire you've heard of like Leonard Leo, Harlan Crow, and Tim Dunn, there's at least a dozen more just as evil who you haven't heard of, and each of them has an army of sycophantic millionaires that even they haven't heard of. These people genuinely want Gilead and they have the money to virtually overnight move an entire state's politics from George W Bush to Don Huffines. MAGA is pretending to be short on cash, and while that might be on true on paper for the Trump campaign it is definitely not true in any meaningful way as far as politics are concerned.

It doesn't die with him.  The base of the movement has been there a long, long time (Tea Party movement, birtherism, etc.).  BUT....its outsized power will go away when he dies.  He has a unique, incredible ability to unify fucking idiots and assholes.  It's objectively one of the most impressive, amazing things I've ever seen.

5 hours ago, SydneyCarton said:

Yeah, I dont think those people die, I just think a chunk of them go back into the woodword and back to not showing up for elections. Their power reduces. It won't die. But it won't be driving 70 million people to the polls. And I think even the news organizations will regroup as well, Fox News, etc. But we'll see.

5 hours ago, The Dog said:

The MAGA MOVEMENT dies with Trump. I think some are confusing that with the GOP since they are currently one in the same.

The hard core Trumpers who Trump brought into the fold will leave, killing the movement. The stain will remain.

Just look at the numbers between ‘16 and ‘20 for an idea of his charisma and getting people out to vote who weren’t voting previously.  In a lot of states you can check at least some voting records of people you know.

Now a bunch of those were Qanon types whose movement deflated after the grifters running it started fighting/were exposed, and they were pissed that Trump was still bragging about the vaccine he developed and/or Trump wouldn’t execute his enemies on the steps of the Capitol, but those types are coalescing around RFK Jr.  whether they show up to vote or not is up for debate.

They aren’t showing up at his various courthouse appearances even though he’s begged them to, they aren’t filling arenas for his rallies, and no matter how much he threatens the various judges and prosecutors on social media, they don’t seem to be acting against those judges and prosecutors.

I'm talking more about his gubernatorial primary run that pushed the entire party to the hard right. Do you think we would have SB4 and the school choice nonsense if the billionaires weren't trying to turn the state into a Christofascist hellscape? In 2001 we could watch any porn we wanted online. We are less free today because of these billionaires.

Not overnight, but think of how different it is at 1100 Congress today versus say 2018.

You're referring specifically to Trump, I'm aligning with @Rimbo's discussion that it does not have to have that man and his corporeal  person in order to wage a (un) holy war.

I'd love for you to be correct in your projection, but IMO, it's too early to be that confident.

With all due respect to the apparent conservatives (and others) on this board who seem surprised by Trump fascism/theocracy and think MAGA will wane in power .... You have had your eyes closed and only saw what you wanted to see the past few decades with the GOP.

Trump's death ain't stopping anything. A slow down, maybe for a bit ... the Perot cult showed that. But MAGA-GQP (or whatever new tribal name emerges) ain't going away. That's because it's been building for 40-50 FUCKING years: Reagan-Falwell, Bush 1, Perot/United We Stand, Bush 2, Tea Party, MAGA-Q, Trump. Someone will come next.

A fascist theocracy is already here in America. Evangelicals, fundamentalists, creationists, nationalists, and many other Christians are on-board. They own the Supreme Court for decades, own many lower court judges. They got Roe overturned. They are empowered. Reproductive rights is just the beginning. They are coming after women and POC on multiple fronts and also immigrants/LGBTQIA. They are wrecking secular school systems. Going after universities, tenure, diversity. Have the backing of most police, and perhaps many in the military. Attacking science, doctors, nurses, medical experts. Installing fascists and theocrats in positions of power. Thanks W and all your faith-based idiocy. They will come after scientists and atheists and non-believers, it's only a matter of time.

The only question is how much will the fascism/theocracy grow in power. Will enough voters in swing states vote D to limit its growth.

MAGA-GQP are not merely an existential threat to America democracy, they are a threat to the world civilization. With their insane Revelation-inspired apocalyptic worldviews, one of those lunatics in control of nukes is a threat to the entire planet

Jesus Christ guys when Trump loses a third popular vote and second election so does his bullshit. These people are largely fucking losers, will shut up and go away mostly, then pretend they were never “really” into him. The numbers aren’t there for long standing success.

It’s only been in recent years that AI-generated porn based around Sela Ward was worthy of the name.

Why do you think they're so hysterical about birth rates and immigration? You know who else tried to manage "undesirable" populations and how they tried to do it? You really think they aren't going to try?? Look around you. They're already working on this.

The narrowing gap in presidential numbers from 2000-2020 is hilarious in Texas. If not for lockdowns in 2020, Texas had the momentum to take the whole fucking thing. Trump has shown in two cycles he gets more people out AGAINST him in our state

It will be kind of amusing watching Don Jr. try to fill Trump’s shoes as his successor. He’s every bit as much of a shitty person but with none of the grotesque carnival-barker/snake-oil-salesman charisma that his crooked father possesses.
