With that said, he publicly told Musk he better watch himself and not go after Republicans, or there would be "serious consequences" so he's flexed on Musk.

So you're saying there's a chance of serious consequences? Not that I'm against it!

Ford CEO shuts down Tesla Full Self-Driving deal, says Waymo is better

Ford has long been rumored to be in discussions with Tesla about licensing its Full Self-Driving technology, but CEO Jim Farley has now shut down those rumors. Farley confirmed that Ford talked with Tesla, but he believes Waymo has a better solution.

Back in 2021, Tesla CEO Elon Musk mentioned that he had early discussions with other automakers about licensing self-driving technology, but these discussions didn’t lead to any agreements. In 2023, the CEO announced that Tesla would be open to licensing Autopilot and FSD to other automakers. [rest of the article under spoiler...]

Spoiler

However, a few months later, Musk said “automakers don’t believe Tesla Full Self-Driving is real”, but he claimed they will soon.

In 2024, Musk claimed that Tesla was in discussions with “one major automaker about licensing Full Self-Driving.”

Ford was rumored to be the automaker in question due to its limited effort in autonomous driving and the fact that it was the first automaker to initiate the adoption of Tesla’s charge connector as the new North American standard.

The rumors might have been true, as CEO Jim Farley confirmed that Ford was in talks with Tesla about self-driving during a talk at the Aspen Ideas Festival last week.

He said that he talked with Musk and admitted that both Waymo and Tesla have made progress toward self-driving, but he sees LIDAR, which Waymo uses but Tesla does not, as a critical part of self-driving.

Farley was directly asked what approach made more sense (via Fortune😞

“To us, Waymo,” Farley said. He pointed out that both Waymo, owned by Google-parent Alphabet, and Tesla “have made a lot of progress” on self-driving, and Farley acknowledged that he has had conversations with Elon Musk. But he stated that Ford considered LiDAR to be an important part of the picture, noting that “where the camera will be completely blinded, the LiDAR system will see exactly what’s in front of you.”

Ford invested approximately $1 billion in Argo AI, a self-driving startup in partnership with Volkswagen. However, it ceased funding the company in 2022, and Argo AI was subsequently dissolved, with the two automakers integrating their technology.

After this setback, Ford said it would partner with self-driving companies once the technology is further developed.

Waymo has first been focused on developing its own vehicles for autonomous ride-hailing, while Tesla has been trying to bring consumer autonomous vehicles to market.

These different approaches have been reversing lately with Tesla launching a pilot program for its own autonomous ride-hailing fleet after years of failing making its consumer vehicles self-driving.

Meanwhile, Waymo has recently been securing deals with Toyota and Hyundai about integrating its self-driving technology into their consumer vehicles.

Electrek’s Take

Tesla shareholders have been hoping for those talks that Musk has been teasing for years to come to fruition, and have an automaker validate Tesla’s approach to self-driving.

It looks like it won’t be Ford and it looks like Ford might have been that “one major automaker” in discussion with Tesla.

As Farley put it, they want to take a careful approach to self-driving, and if that’s your goal, Tesla might not be the best partner.

I guess all I can say is, "duh." The thing I wonder more is whether Tesla's already at it's dead end with cameras. I think we all, except for the most Tesla-optimistic, have known for some time that there's a ceiling on what you can do with a camera-only approach. This makes me think that we are already there, or damn close to it, with Tesla stuck at SAE Level 2+ and no way to climb higher, even if some reckless Tesla owners treat it like Level 3/4 in practice.

Would you trust a bunch of camera-only Teslas driving down the highway at 75mph, and then all of the sudden an 18-wheeler passes them, casting a shadow over them and spooking the whole herd?

Or the cameras/computer misjudging a corner?

Are the Teslas driven by Elmo fans? This could change my answer.

Correct. And if some minced Carolina Reaper happens to make it into that bucket prior to the rubbin', well, I have no idea how that happened.

Elon acting like MAGA actually cares about principles and policies and isn't just gobbling up whatever Trump tells to think is super adorable.

Elon thinking that anyone believes that HE cares about principles and policies is rich.  He cares only about things that will personally enrich or glorify him (feeding his ego, and trying to fill that enormous void of needing validation and love...that will never, ever be filled by ANYTHING external).  He has no empathy or concern for any human being other than himself.  View everything he says through that accurate lens, and you'll understand all you need to understand about him.

Fuck him.  I hope that he realizes, with increasing despair and desperation, that nothing he does - no amount of money, no amount of power - will ever fill the void he carries around.  He will die empty, alone, and desperate for the love and validation he could never obtain, because he doesn't have the first clue where genuine love and peace come from.

What would also be adorable would be if he stays true to his word and funds primary challengers for all these fucks. The infighting would be just so super cute.

He’s absolutely going to fuck with them.  That bill is a big fuck you to DOGE, and it’s seriously threatening the profitability of Tesla (that and the CyberTruck probably).

That’s why I never understood his embrace of the right,  I get the libertarian thing, a lot of white makes go through that phase in their life.

But a lot in the GOP have been gunning for the EV makers for years, and he should have known that. They openly talked about ditching the tax credits and carbon credits. I would bet money that lobbyists in his company or the EV industry in general put a lot of effort into preserving all of those tax breaks and stuff to help them be profitable and help their customers afford those cars.

Leopards eating faces and all of that.

If he loses the profitability of Tesla, that’s pretty much his ATM.  That’s why there is talk of him merging it with Twitter/xAI. He needs that revenue. If those tax credits and carbon credits and potential contracts go away, it’s actually bad for him.

I expect some public meltdowns in the coming days.  And Trump is going to be furious that Musk is challenging his legacy.  Trump made the threat last week, and Musk called his bluff.

Even though I’m on Surly, I’m not an expert, but if the NTSB/NHSA refused any more self-driving recommendations or certifications or whatever they do when it comes to self-driving, for Tesla, I would imagine that would mean a lot of insurance companies walking away from Tesla owners.

Egg zachary!

Although, probably worth pointing out, you don't need a trademark or trademark registration (or patent or copyright) to release a product.  You may get your ass sued off for patent, trademark, or copyright infringement, but a patent or TM registration wouldn't have stopped that.

IP is mostly offensive in nature:  it gives you the right to sue others, but not much else.  It has few defensive characteristics:  it won't protect you from suit except in some very indirect ways.

Exactly.  And Musk spent a few months within Trump's inner orbit, so he knows how temperamental Trump is, and that very few people who piss Trump off get back within his good graces, and he knows how Trump targets/goes after his enemies.

Honestly, I think Musk is scared. If he's serious about ponying up to defeat a lot of Republicans next year, there's no coming back from that - you get one chance, and if doesn't pull it off, MAGA in Congress will act against Tesla, Starlink, SpaceX, etc.

And don't think Boeing and the other old-school aerospace industry types aren't already running a whisper campaign against Musk, probably bringing up everything from his behavior to his public drug use to potential security risks in regard to his international ties. He could easily turbofuck SpaceX in the process of going after supporters of this bill.

Saw a BYD at a party. Owner bought it in MX. Nice looking vehicle and waaaay cheaper than all our EV offerings here. I get the protections needed for our auto industry here but they’re fucked as far as competing in the EV space globally.

The "perhaps we should have DOGE look at Elon" comment is not only some weak-tea, it confirms they were not looking at seeking revenge on Elon until now. So if you're trying to use something said today to bolster the argument you made 2 or 3 days ago about how the demented menace was surely going after musk, just know that I know you're not "smarter than" shit.
