Right. The reason the Democrats will not address this issue, and the reason the Republicans fail to really solve it, is because the economy of the US benefits from the status quo.
The illegal workers get to be exploited for sub minimum wages and illegal working conditions and are willing to come and put up with it to send money home to their families. Their labor benefits everybody. If the Democrats, or whomever, took serious steps to introduce some kind of immigration reform to make this all legal, they couldn't really do it without enforcing existing labor standards which would mean they cannot be exploited as much as before. This would be bad for big business so they block any such effort.
And likewise the Republicans only pretend to do something about it and use it as a wedge issue to get out their voters.
So the whole thing is gross and corrupt and nobody does anything about it. And we'll see what happens with this latest ICE thing.
The kind of ridiculous thing is the asylum seekers, they seem to be the ones who are mostly get shit on through all of this. They are ones who get bussed away from the border by Abbott. I think they are ones who are going to be driven out of the country ultimately. The corporations don't care about them. But they aren't even illegal immigrants, they are following the laws.

Very succinctly stated.

Do you have a link showing that 86% of the population can't find a store other than a Walgreens to buy eggs?

First off, Obama wasn't exactly timid about deportation, plus he and the Senate Dems put together a comprehensive immigration reform bill together in the 2012-2013 timeframe, and the House Republicans wouldn't even bring it up for a vote.

Trump offered nothing but anger, hate, and a stupid wall. The Dems in the House offered a big border bill, but the Republican Senate also refused to bring up a vote. Of course, Biden's recent bill was also killed by the GOP.

The Dems HAVE BEEN trying to address people's concerns for more than a decade, but the GOP keeps getting in the way, so nothing gets done. Remind me, how the fuck is this the Dems' fault other than they fucking suck at messaging?

This is the asymmetry of the GOP.

A coalition of older, white Americans, corporations, billionaires, and religious zealots who want the government to allow them to break the rules for their gain

: pay less in taxes than their share should be, allow them to discriminate, and plunder. The government doesn’t need to do anything other than get out of the way…… and police those who don’t like it.

When people resist, it only goes to reinforce their positions. Protest? Police more. Try to provide services or govern effectively? That requires one to Raise taxes… which gets you voted out. Try to do anything good when in the majority? Well the GOP just needs to delay, distract, and play defense. The clock is on their side.
Their platform is a self sustaining spiral that leads to more republican, tea party, MAGA results.

You can’t get off the ride outside of a major cataclysmic event. 9/11, 2008, and Covid were major events. Not cataclysmic enough. But enough to speed up trends. However they didn’t cause any major changes to our government or the world order. Only destabilized it. Maybe like ww1 they primed the pump so to speak.

No for these trends to fully stop, you need a Great Depression + WW level destabilization. Only then will this ride change. Lots of pain will ensue. Even more pain than we’ve seen. Sad to say. But if history is our guide, we are a little overdue.

Whether you want to believe it or not, a majority of Americans are not happy with the way dems have addressed the border. Hispanics in particular, especially those who live in border states, resoundingly rejected it. This is the reality, and the national level dems massively misjudged this to their peril. Many post mortems point to this as perhaps the biggest factor in losing what should have been a solid blue bloc

eta you don’t have to play to a group’s fears. You do have to acknowledge a group’s fears and show them that you have a plan to address them, not just tell them the fears are unfounded

Correct.

Is it messaging that fooled the hispanic voters along the border to  vote for Trump? Or are the concerns real and perhaps it was wrongly downplayed in the media?

The first step is always admitting there's a problem.

5.50 at the expensive HEB in san marcos. 18 for 9. Just ordered a new batch of chicks for FiL's place. Plan is whatever we don't eat goes to either the food bank or others we know in rough times.

I probably need to add a chicken or two to my coop. None are laying right now with daylight being so short.

If I was rebuilding I would add Quail as a side run.

But of course you are now going to get bird flu. Are you drinking your bleach?

Actually that is a main reason I’ve hesitated adding. I know my birds are healthy and don’t want to add an unknown.

Bleach and horse paste are Covid treatments, don't you know? The protocol for bird flu is going to be antifreeze and glue, taken orally for three days or until symptoms abate. I'm pretty sure the symptoms will be gone quite quick but the prognosis is poor.

"Most post mortems" that I've heard do not mention Christian Nationalism or Project 2025 at all. That's likely because the people doing post mortems didn't like talking about the former and used the latter as shorthand as though everybody knew exactly what it was in their analyses leading up to the election.

They narrow-mindedly focus on things that are easy and habitual. The best example of this is the way they focus on the tiny percentage of the vote that they claim determines outcome. They're obsessed with the horserace aspect of coverage. If only the Dem horse had a bigger nose. Look at the horses in toto.

Among the elephants (mixed metaphors, anyone?) which they ignore in what must be a gigantic room, is what the majority as a whole voted for. A totally amoral man has been elected president. The voters know this because they regularly rationalize away his vile and wicked deeds or embrace them. Those who didn't vote gave silent approval. I can say this because every aspect of Trump's character is public. Even so, analysts shy from talk of morality because it's subjective. They shy from talking about religion because it's just not done.

I've seen nothing about those aspects of the election in the analyses I've heard on the radio, seen linked from here, or viewed on TV news.

I make myself tiresome by repeating this; they don't grasp the new paradigm. I don't know whether that's laziness or timidity. We're not talking about stupid people, so it's not ignorance.

Dem messaging is exceptionally low in the list of considerations about what just happened in November. They've tried lots of stuff that doesn't work because they still operate like a political party pressing a policy agenda. That's what they are. The war being waged by the GOPs has succeeded in marginalizing Dems as socialist enemies of democracy. All of this while Donald Trump is gutting government to build a fief.

Long post. Sorry about that.

True. You point to exploitation of immigrants to keep prices down, but many immigrants make minimum wage jobs.

No matter, you touch on the main point, IMHO. In the hubub about messaging and policies to save us from the stream of immigrants, who honestly states what the problem is with it.

I mostly see benefits. I only see lies about criminals in lieu of actual arguments about how these people coming to the US is harming the US. Why is that? See my bloviations above about analysis and apply it to how this elephant is ignored.

I believe it's been established here a number of times over the years that they are not an actual drain on US resources as so many work and contribute through taxes and SS payments.

What's the problem? White people don't want to be outnumbered, is obvious, but nobody says that out loud. And white people benefit from the presence of the immigrants as much or more than everybody else.

Plus, the $3 for a 10 cent hashbrown and the $4 coffee plus tax means you can get a nice breakfast at McDonalds for $20.  Thanks Biden

As was mine this week, which is in the Heights are of Houston. The shelves were completely bare, regardless of brand more or less, and the guy was restocking as I was there so I grabbed a dozen just becuase. Also, the price was up 50% compared to the last time I got eggs a few weeks ago.

I'm guessing this is the situation at every HEB in Texas at this  point.

Good point. NOw that I think about it my preferred brands of milk were also super low. What does chicken usually cost? The HEB natural was like 4.50 a lb, and that feels high?
