They don’t like the world the way it is now. They want it to be like it used to be. They know they are at a disadvantage, are pissed at their program’s leaders for not navigating this better, and can’t believe the rest of college football can possibly be ok with a world where OU struggles to compete.

No. No I don't think I will.gif.

They currently have fifteen commits and are ranked #40 in recruiting.  The QB from Celina is the highest rated commit and is a top 100 national player.  Of the remaining fourteen, seven are low 4*'s and the other seven are 3*'s (this includes a kicker).  When's the last time they had a class this bad?

Not recently enough. They’ll get theirs, but it will be more over rated guys who couldn’t pass scouting muster at real schools.

I was thinking about Bowe Bentley's recruitment the other day. Looks like UT and even aggy said "good luck, kid," without even handing out a fake, non-committable offer (although I must concede that, when you get a kid like Bell, there's no need to look any further. But that still doesn't explain aggy taking the much lower rated kid from Utah, unless they're making a horrible mistake, which, well... OK that's very plausible). However, tOSU took a 3-star instead of fighting for Bentley, I'm not sure I buy that UGA ever actually "offered," and LSU, with no current QB commit, also did not seem interested in fighting for him in the slightest.

Maybe I'm completely out to lunch on this (and it would be VERY fair to call me an ignorant, know-nothing asshole) but outside of 3 schools that didn't seem to care enough to really recruit Bentley, I'm very much unimpressed by his offer list, particularly given the lack of local-ish powers (sorry, Tech - you don't count). Even TCU, Baylor, and SMU don't seem to have offered. Time will tell but this looks to me like a Haynes King/Jackson Arnold type situation to me.

On the other hand, it seems like Duke really wanted him so at least we know his grades are pretty good

Anytime I come across an OU interview on Twitter or whatnot, it always seems to be Nagy talking. He was the only GM to attend SEC media days. Venables has basically been pushed to the side and is the defensive coordinator who will have to answer questions from the media after every game.

I'd be interested to know how much actual input Venables has in recruiting because my guess is that it is very minimal.

Do we know if Venables is like a Cowboys HC, not allowed to overrule his OC’s play calls?

He's definitely been neutered.  I imagine because they can't afford his buyout yet.  I haven't seen anything to indicate Nagy is going to be a good gm though which is nice.  There's a lot of ingredients for a real big mess simmering away in Norman right now.  This season goes poorly and it's going to get ugly.

If/when their season doesn't go as hoped, their org chart is going to make for an entertaining and above-average game of it's-his-fault-not-mine.

OU on3 site with some notes from an event Nagy spoke at (again, it's interesting that the GM is the one making all these public appearances)

Spoiler

Talked to some folks that were in attendance last night as Jim Nagy spoke for nearly an hour. Quick summary of the important details...

— Nagy said there's not a single staffer in the building who is a liability in recruiting; everybody on the coaching and scouting staff can recruit

— Of the scouting staff, Nagy said "the heavy lift is going to be on us" when it comes to watching tape; this is designed to eliminate wasted time for the coaches, who no longer have to watch hours of tape in order to find a guy or two that they might like

— Nagy reaffirmed that given the sheer size of the HS talent pool across the country, the scouting and on-field staff won't need to try to override each other with evaluations: "It's not going to be my guy; it's not going to be Brent's guy; it's going to be our guy"

— Nagy once again emphasized that he and his staff will pay exactly zero attention to third-party rankings from 247 and Rivals

— To raucous laughter, Nagy made a comment about how many five-star signees at Oklahoma have actually panned out in the 21st century: "Not an illustrious group"

— Nagy says his grading scale isn't scheme-specific, and he views it as dangerous to recruit narrowly to a single scheme or playbook

— Nagy is going to be unafraid to pursue small-school players in the transfer portal, as he pointed out that the NFL is littered with them

— Nagy added that Oklahoma will start recruiting junior-college players again in some cases, and that they won't use the portal to acquire players that haven't produced

— On in-state recruiting, Nagy said he'd love to build a fence around the state of Oklahoma and recruit local talent, but an in-state player still has to be good enough for the Sooners to pull the trigger... he's not interested in signing players that aren't good enough to help OU win

— Nagy said that Oklahoma's offense could hardly get a first down in the spring of 2024, according to some of the coaches that were around at the time; the 2025 offense has already demonstrated infinitely more promise than last year's unit

— Nagy noted that Jaydn Ott is continuing to put on more and more weight, and currently weighs more than he ever has... but he's also faster than he's ever been as well, and the sports science department has helped Ott immensely in packing on that weight while maintaining the burst

— Isaiah Sategna and John Mateer have an excellent chemistry thus far, per Nagy, and there's significantly better competition at TE and OL than there was a year ago

— Nagy loosely compared Mateer to Bo Nix, and pointed out that if Mateer leaves for the NFL after the 2025 season, it probably means Oklahoma had a hell of a year

— Nagy said that it's impossible to call a bad play for Mateer, because he can "make it right"

— On the defensive side of the ball, Nagy singled out Taylor Wein as a player that's made enormous strides this offseason

— Maybe a joke, maybe not... Nagy said if he could make one change to the CFB calendar, he'd get Oklahoma State and Nebraska back on OU's annual schedule

— Nagy said that there are only a few players on Oklahoma's roster with multi-year NIL deals, and that the program mainly wants to go year-to-year with agreements until additional structure is implemented in CFB

— Nagy called 2024 an "aberration," and said the Sooners expect to have a strong season in 2025... he added that Oklahoma fully intends to flip at least a couple of recruits committed elsewhere this fall

We fuck up in evaluating the talent of highly ranked recruits, but we're going to nail it when it comes to unheralded players.  That really instills confidence.  I hope Venables has another mediocre season in him because this is going to fun to watch if they're not good again.

It's funny that people act like they're doing something unique in recruiting a bunch of lowly rated "developmental" prospects. Isn't that what literally every program that can't recruit at a high level tries to do?

It's the thing the good small programs do.  You know the type of program that we pay to blast by 40 points in the beginning of the season and then they go on to win their conference.
