They don’t like the world the way it is now. They want it to be like it used to be. They know they are at a disadvantage, are pissed at their program’s leaders for not navigating this better, and can’t believe the rest of college football can possibly be ok with a world where OU struggles to compete.

No. No I don't think I will.gif.

They currently have fifteen commits and are ranked #40 in recruiting.  The QB from Celina is the highest rated commit and is a top 100 national player.  Of the remaining fourteen, seven are low 4*'s and the other seven are 3*'s (this includes a kicker).  When's the last time they had a class this bad?

Not recently enough. They’ll get theirs, but it will be more over rated guys who couldn’t pass scouting muster at real schools.

I was thinking about Bowe Bentley's recruitment the other day. Looks like UT and even aggy said "good luck, kid," without even handing out a fake, non-committable offer (although I must concede that, when you get a kid like Bell, there's no need to look any further. But that still doesn't explain aggy taking the much lower rated kid from Utah, unless they're making a horrible mistake, which, well... OK that's very plausible). However, tOSU took a 3-star instead of fighting for Bentley, I'm not sure I buy that UGA ever actually "offered," and LSU, with no current QB commit, also did not seem interested in fighting for him in the slightest.

Maybe I'm completely out to lunch on this (and it would be VERY fair to call me an ignorant, know-nothing asshole) but outside of 3 schools that didn't seem to care enough to really recruit Bentley, I'm very much unimpressed by his offer list, particularly given the lack of local-ish powers (sorry, Tech - you don't count). Even TCU, Baylor, and SMU don't seem to have offered. Time will tell but this looks to me like a Haynes King/Jackson Arnold type situation to me.

On the other hand, it seems like Duke really wanted him so at least we know his grades are pretty good

Anytime I come across an OU interview on Twitter or whatnot, it always seems to be Nagy talking. He was the only GM to attend SEC media days. Venables has basically been pushed to the side and is the defensive coordinator who will have to answer questions from the media after every game.

I'd be interested to know how much actual input Venables has in recruiting because my guess is that it is very minimal.

Do we know if Venables is like a Cowboys HC, not allowed to overrule his OC’s play calls?

He's definitely been neutered.  I imagine because they can't afford his buyout yet.  I haven't seen anything to indicate Nagy is going to be a good gm though which is nice.  There's a lot of ingredients for a real big mess simmering away in Norman right now.  This season goes poorly and it's going to get ugly.

If/when their season doesn't go as hoped, their org chart is going to make for an entertaining and above-average game of it's-his-fault-not-mine.

OU on3 site with some notes from an event Nagy spoke at (again, it's interesting that the GM is the one making all these public appearances)

Spoiler

Talked to some folks that were in attendance last night as Jim Nagy spoke for nearly an hour. Quick summary of the important details...

— Nagy said there's not a single staffer in the building who is a liability in recruiting; everybody on the coaching and scouting staff can recruit

— Of the scouting staff, Nagy said "the heavy lift is going to be on us" when it comes to watching tape; this is designed to eliminate wasted time for the coaches, who no longer have to watch hours of tape in order to find a guy or two that they might like

— Nagy reaffirmed that given the sheer size of the HS talent pool across the country, the scouting and on-field staff won't need to try to override each other with evaluations: "It's not going to be my guy; it's not going to be Brent's guy; it's going to be our guy"

— Nagy once again emphasized that he and his staff will pay exactly zero attention to third-party rankings from 247 and Rivals

— To raucous laughter, Nagy made a comment about how many five-star signees at Oklahoma have actually panned out in the 21st century: "Not an illustrious group"

— Nagy says his grading scale isn't scheme-specific, and he views it as dangerous to recruit narrowly to a single scheme or playbook

— Nagy is going to be unafraid to pursue small-school players in the transfer portal, as he pointed out that the NFL is littered with them

— Nagy added that Oklahoma will start recruiting junior-college players again in some cases, and that they won't use the portal to acquire players that haven't produced

— On in-state recruiting, Nagy said he'd love to build a fence around the state of Oklahoma and recruit local talent, but an in-state player still has to be good enough for the Sooners to pull the trigger... he's not interested in signing players that aren't good enough to help OU win

— Nagy said that Oklahoma's offense could hardly get a first down in the spring of 2024, according to some of the coaches that were around at the time; the 2025 offense has already demonstrated infinitely more promise than last year's unit

— Nagy noted that Jaydn Ott is continuing to put on more and more weight, and currently weighs more than he ever has... but he's also faster than he's ever been as well, and the sports science department has helped Ott immensely in packing on that weight while maintaining the burst

— Isaiah Sategna and John Mateer have an excellent chemistry thus far, per Nagy, and there's significantly better competition at TE and OL than there was a year ago

— Nagy loosely compared Mateer to Bo Nix, and pointed out that if Mateer leaves for the NFL after the 2025 season, it probably means Oklahoma had a hell of a year

— Nagy said that it's impossible to call a bad play for Mateer, because he can "make it right"

— On the defensive side of the ball, Nagy singled out Taylor Wein as a player that's made enormous strides this offseason

— Maybe a joke, maybe not... Nagy said if he could make one change to the CFB calendar, he'd get Oklahoma State and Nebraska back on OU's annual schedule

— Nagy said that there are only a few players on Oklahoma's roster with multi-year NIL deals, and that the program mainly wants to go year-to-year with agreements until additional structure is implemented in CFB

— Nagy called 2024 an "aberration," and said the Sooners expect to have a strong season in 2025... he added that Oklahoma fully intends to flip at least a couple of recruits committed elsewhere this fall

We fuck up in evaluating the talent of highly ranked recruits, but we're going to nail it when it comes to unheralded players.  That really instills confidence.  I hope Venables has another mediocre season in him because this is going to fun to watch if they're not good again.

It's funny that people act like they're doing something unique in recruiting a bunch of lowly rated "developmental" prospects. Isn't that what literally every program that can't recruit at a high level tries to do?

It's the thing the good small programs do.  You know the type of program that we pay to blast by 40 points in the beginning of the season and then they go on to win their conference.

Nagy apparently graduated from the same school of player reporting as Ketch et al.

From former coworker and OU fan:

“Here is my culmination of notes from Jim Nagy.

Gabe Ikard and Teddy Lehman introduced Jim Nagy as he took a seat to a loud ovation from the crowd. Nagy spoke to the crowd for over an hour. He also personally spoke to several crowd members after the event (including me).

Nagy confirmed a lot of what TFB has already been reporting, but he also gave a few interesting tidbits as well. I took notes and found the following things very interesting.

– Nagy thanked his staff that works under him and explained what he oversees (basically everything within the football program). Some of his staff was highly coveted.

– He mentioned that the setup with a GM, an evaluation staff, etc that OU is using mimics NFL organizations. He said OU is the ONLY university running this type of set up in CFB. He said it makes sense, considering players will be paid and there’s no getting around it. He did say he never planned on working for a college, but if he did, there was a short list of perennial powerhouse universities that he would have even considered. OU was one of them.

– Nagy said his goal is to get OU national championships.

– He explained the role of his staff. He said they are responsible for searching, finding, evaluating, and recruiting high school and portal players. He did mention he has had to adjust to watching high school tape as opposed to NFL prospects tape.

– As TFB mentioned, he said his staff is strictly forbidden from using national recruiting services to find or evaluate players. He said they put in their own work with evaluations and use a uniform grading system, and they do not care or even know what star rating the players have (until later in the process, which I’ll hit on). He reiterated that everyone has to use this grading system and that it has been tested in the NFL and it works. He’s very confident with this evaluation process.

– Nagy joked and said an unnamed position coach came up to him with a national recruiting service top 25 players for his position to try and help his staff out. He laughed and basically told the coach he didn’t need the list.

– Nagy mentioned that the coaches were wasting time watching hours upon hours of film for recruits. He said they can now focus solely on COACHING. He said the film watching will be done by his staff and the players will be graded. He said coaches should coach, and this system takes a load off of the coaches.

– Once the players are graded independently, he mentioned that his staff members need to all agree on the grading range. They present these players to the coaches, and the coaches can ask questions or review the player further. He said if the coach has any concerns, everyone (coaches and his staff) meets and they must be on board before moving forward with the recruit. He said if the coaches aren’t fully on board, the player will not be recruited because his staff will not force any players onto the coaching staff who they don’t buy into fully.

– Nagy mentioned that they are working on the 2026 recruiting class right now. He mentioned how several recruits were asking for so much money that it was more than any current player on the roster is making. Nagy said he will not upset the culture and program by overpaying a player in this way. He said this 2026 group understands this was the last hurrah with non-capped money and tried to take advantage of it.

– He said each staff member has a huge board or type of layout. It details each recruit’s life basically and instructs the staff member when they need to call, text, or check in with a recruit based on their individual needs.

– He mentioned that this new generation of players tells everyone how much money they are making, and they compare it with each other, so it’s very important to not upset the culture.

– On that same note he said he really loves the culture BV has built, and they are all family. He said he personally tries to connect with each recruit and their families. He said some recruits were on campus for an official visit and he had first met them on this visit since he was only recently hired. He said he wants the recruits to not only be able to reach out to the coaches if they have issues or concerns, but also to his staff. He wants the recruits and their families to feel comfortable with everything about OU.

– Also as TFB has reported, Nagy mentioned that a few schools restructured and front loaded their players pay so they have more money now for 26 recruits with this revenue sharing. He said those schools will have more money to work with this go around, but assured the crowd that OU will still compete with them in recruiting, and he hinted that OU will be in a similar situation as these schools for the 2027 class.

– He jokingly mentioned how an unnamed recruit jumped up in the rankings when he committed to OU as he spoke of national recruiting services.

– He mentioned that Revenue sharing is what the players are getting and the biggest issue (not NIL). He said revenue sharing with the cap is the future of college football and all teams will work with the process.

– He mentioned that OU will flip some recruits in the fall and he truly believes this season will be very successful. He hinted that they are recruiting some committed players now.

– Nagy said that once a recruit is more or less serious about coming to OU, a price range is determined. He said that at that time, the player leverages their pay by using the national star ranking system. So he said, even though his staff doesn’t care if a guy is a consensus 4 or 5 star during evaluations, they are fair and understand that the player will and should be compensated appropriately if he is a 4 or 5 star recruit by the recruiting services.

– He mentioned the biggest positive about his own staff using a trusted grading system and evaluating their own prospects is, it can allow the revenue money to be used more efficiently. He specifically said if they evaluate and grade a 5-star and a 3-star recruit the same (he said if both recruits grade out as a starter or all-conference potential for example)….why pay a massive amount more for the 5-star when his grade is the same as the 3-star? He went on to say that’s how much he trusts his grading system. He said OU won’t compete with ”Miami or Texas A&M ” for a listed 5-star when OU values the 3-star just as much (or more in some cases) at the same position. He said OU would rather go get the 3-star player because he thinks OU will get the same quality of player for a better bargain.

– Nagy said he holds his staff accountable. He reiterated the fact that he will find good players for the coaches and he takes all responsibility if a player doesn’t work out. He told the coaches don’t worry about recruits and stars, he’s gonna get them the players they need.”

I have a lot of thoughts on all of that. I’ll just say that I see some positives in that approach, but I also see a lot of negatives. I think they’ll fail.

Yes consider the source, but Ian Boyd claims that Nagy reports directly to the new AD.

I think Nagy outlasting Venables is a very safe bet.

The problem with this approach is that it assumes you can find equivalent 5* talent shopping in the bargain bin. I bet there aren’t many instances in which OU finds a 3* who’s just as good as a 4 or 5*. It’s more likely they’re having to settle for the best they can get with the limited funds they have.

There was a path for this Venables shit to work. Hit the Christian culture thing harder than Dabo, and convince recruits Austin was the devil. Hell it recently worked with Fasusi.

Instead, they turned to Nagy’s Moneyball bullshit because it was cheaper and didn’t require staff to follow boosters into the bathroom to ask for NIL contributions. Great approach in the Big 12, but they’re going to get killed in the SEC.

Nagy sounds like the exact kind of prick who thinks he’s smarter than everyone else, because of whatever nfl and nfl adjacent experience he has, but is completely out of his depth. Like charlie Weiss strategic and tactical advantage bullshit. The guy was just a fucking scout and worked at the senior bowl. He’s like the Brett Yormack of Oklahoma. And look at this goofy motherfucker and his Hayes Fawcett bio pic that will get @texifornia rock hard:

Jeff Howe had some good thoughts on OU in a recent podcast. He basically said they’ve embraced becoming the new Nebraska instead of fighting against it, and they’re pussies for not trying with 5 stars. “They’re a top 5 program all time, a blue blood, they absolutely  should be competing against Texas, Bama, and fOSU for the best players.”
