I didn't think recognizing our starting QB and two of our returning All-Americans was going to be a challenge, but yes you are correct.

I like to earn my points where I can.

It’s not a given. Pretty sure Charlie Strong forgot to go one year.

That's just not true. He absolutely did not forget to go. He just couldn't remember the ZIP code.

You think he's done?

No idea.  But, headcount wise,  it's as big or bigger than Saban had in his last couple years.  Could see Sark expanding the number of coaching reclamation slots as well as adding some financial expertise to manage salary cap.

Everyone enjoy our last weekend before SEC Media Days. I'm hunkering down before the barrage of Arch hot take bombs.

Over under on the idiot podcasters who say "Wow, I had no idea he was that big!"

Spoiler

dude is a big fan of feet being tied to eyes with QBs. basically alignment between the two so you aren't throwing off your back foot, across your body etc - Arch does this well.

mechanics are even more important in Sark's system where the QB is faking handoffs, etc and often has the back of his head pointing at the center and has to know that what he saw pre-snap isn't necessarily what you get when you snap your head back around after the play starts

"when we talk about playing with timing, this is what we are talking about"

"we watch multiple year starters in CFB all the time on this channel fail to bring their feet with their eyes, by the time they get to their secondary progression their feet are parallel, they have their feet parallel to the line in full panic mode and are trying to scramble and create plays with their legs...that's not playing a position - this is"

has premier lower body mechanics - focuses on this a ton with him being ready to strike as he goes through his progression. loves that he doesn't overstride (locks knee), left arm is tight to his chest (not losing momentum)

no manning ever, other than Arch is going to just turn it sideways and flick it out - different arm talent

there are some touch pass misses

"i think you are going to see more of this if you are a texas fan than you did in the last 2-3 years combined...your going to watch this dude throw balls that make you pucker up more than the last two years" - going to have to back him off vs encourage him to drive it into the corner and hope it sticks. his turnover ratio will be higher than Ewers, but your explosive margins will be higher too.

"i immediately think you are a much better team 25 and out than you were in the last few years"

knows he going to get pressure, 6 rushers vs 5 blockers, take 3 steps with no hitch put the ball in the air in an accurate spot and let our guy go play. you can't really find a clip of Ewers doing this last year. just didn't happen often the last 2 years (throwing it deep w/ Ewers in this situation just bc he wasn't very good deep)

Gruden calls the drill two handed monster - pressure from right side, dip under the pressure with 2 hands on the ball, set feet and throw. see guys all the time do this, then kind of side arm it out to the deep dig instead of setting feet and throwing it at the most accurate, on time level you can. "that's being disciplined at the position"

he takes big hits - "we cannot be taking hits like this, know when to get down"

if you are saying "the guy wasn't ready" - then you weren't watching the Arch tape last year. dude knows the system.

Number one theme w Ewers was turndowns and floating the football...you don't see that with 16

he said it a ton, people are just going to say "it's just Mississippi State" - but he focuses on the action that Manning has, and his mechanics, playing on time, knowing the system - stuff that is applicable no matter who the opponent is. There's no doubting the talent.

I thought KJ Lacey was black.  And younger.  And more fit.

That stuck out to me as well as the part about throwing more interceptions (maybe) but seeing a huge leap in explosive play margin. I can stand some turnovers if you're sprinkling in a couple of 40+ downfield shots a game.

If you really want a “coaching” deep dive, that Brooks Austin’s podcast is really great and he’s a younger guy.  Very knowledgeable aspects to his podcasts.  I’ve been watching him for a couple of years.

Thank you for posting during the 50+ day season!

How different the energy will be. Just look at the interaction between Arch and the other players. Ewers never seemed to have that type of thing going on. It’s going to be badass.

While there were more check downs with quinn, the int rate didn't seem particularly low. 12 int in 14 games. Almost an int/game. If we get a similar rate but more explosive passing, things may not be so bad... Also deeper ints mean hopefully fewer pick sixes.

Ewers was just so so so inaccurate down field. It's a fair trade off for more explosives

It’s tough to watch Ewers try to drive a football toward the boundaries. He was on-target on just 46% of these looks, the lowest number I’ve ever charted to that level of the field. He’s also on-target on a sub-50% clip throwing the ball deep down the field as well. He was on-target on just 45% there as well. While he was a bit more accurate over the middle at 65%, this number is still a massive 5% below average historically.

Happy to see him break down that Mississippi State game. I don't know why - whether it was the terrible game flow and close score for 3 quarters, playing a shitty SEC team, or something else - but it felt at the time like our fanbase really didn't appreciate how good Arch was in this game.

Mississippi State bled a lot of clock with 3 yards and a cloud of dust offense. But Arch was phenomenal, with lots of wow plays that we haven't seen at QB for a long time. The Johntay drop on 3rd and long (easy TD) was basically a turnover and still pisses me off. Arch played an A/A+ game, if it was a B+ or less the game could have been a nail biter at the end. I don't give a shit if it was against bad competition, the film doesn't lie.

I was trapped in a wedding (in the middle of Hurricane Helene, that was a wild weekend) and could only occasionally check the score and assumed he was fine but nothing special until after the game. I assume, like you said, that people are letting the fact the game was close-ish against a bad team influence how well they think he played.

The Arch to Endries (TE1) will be a connection this year, as well as the other wide outs.  Endries does like to put his hand in the ground and block for the running game (historically) so I expect the same going forward.  Such a great get to replace G Helm.

Our TE room is incredibly deep. It'll be interesting to see how many of these guys stick around after this season.

Lance Jackson looks like a DT and Justus Terry looks like a DE. I'll be interested to watch them play this year.
