Starting to see viral posts from people complaining they can't buy cheap shit anymore. Getting popped at the Mexican border with tariffs on the stuff they thought they'd finished paying for.

But I was told countries paid tariffs.

https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2025/05/wahoo-fitness-adds-tariff-surcharge-to-trackr-radar.html

Quote

Today, Wahoo Fitness opened up shipping on their three newest products: The Wahoo BOLT 3, Wahoo ROAM 3, and Wahoo TRACKR Radar. The BOLT 3 and ROAM 3 are meant to offer smaller-sized and more budget-friendly versions of their top-end Wahoo ACE, complete with the revamped operating system, display, and more.

Meanwhile, the TRACKR Radar is Wahoo’s first cycling radar (and light), though the company has extensive experience with other sensors (in fact, the very first Wahoo product 15 years ago – literally 15 years ago today – was an adapter to connect external ANT+ fitness sensors to your iPhone). Of course, now the company also makes speed sensors, heart rate straps, cadence sensors, power meter pedals/sensors, and plenty more.

But when US customers went to purchase the Wahoo TRACKR Radar today, they found a bit of a surprise: Shipping was $50.

Quote

Specifically, the cheapest shipping option was $50USD, a far cry from the cheapest shipping option on the Wahoo BOLT 3, which was $15. Here’s what the page shows, when a US customer attempts to order the TRACKR Radar:

WahooUS.png

Quote

Now, what’s notable here is that the same isn’t true for EU customers. In fact, there’s not any shipping charge at all. Simply free shipping:

WahooEURPrices.png

Spoiler

So, what’s the difference? Well, given you read the title – it’s the manufacturing location: China.

The BOLT 3 & ROAM 3, like many of Wahoo’s products, are made in Taiwan. However, the TRACKR Radar is made in China, and thus subject to new US tariffs starting at 145%. While there are creative carveouts limiting tariffs for certain tech products coming from China, notably for phones and smartwatches, such exemptions don’t cover cycling radars.

Now, I don’t have a problem, per se, with Wahoo passing on the cost. After all, like it or not, that’s the reality of the US political landscape right now (because, let’s be clear, this is a political choice). However, what I do have a problem with, is not owning up to it. Instead, Wahoo lists this as a ‘service charge’ within the shipping line item, as you saw above.

If you click on the details about service charges, it brings you to another page with a heavily wishy-washy statement about global supply chains:

ServiceCharge.png

Pretending things are shipping charges isn’t consumer-friendly (or honest), and frankly, more importantly – doesn’t actually apply any meaningful pressure to enact change. Further, when Wahoo communicates the price of the Wahoo TRACKR Radar to media outlets (or their own site), it’s listed at $199, when in reality, it’s actually $249. Thus, it’s factually dishonest.

And look, I get it, Wahoo is in a bind here. They got sideswiped by changing government policy (like thousands of other companies), and need to pass on the stupid-high fees to someone, as they should. I just want them to be honest about it. Other companies have simply increased the base price of the unit (temporarily or otherwise), or they added a specific tariff line-item. But calling it a shipping charge just isn’t the way to do it.

Trump will announce a ‘major trade deal’ with the UK Thursday

Quote

Not a real ‘deal’

Despite the administration’s rhetoric that it is in advanced trade negotiations with more than a dozen countries, actual trade deals take significant time, often years, to hash out. They typically involve incredibly complex agreements, delving into the minutiae of various goods and non-tariff barriers. They often involve significant political considerations, as various parties seek to protect voters with special interests.

Instead, the “deal” Trump announced is more like a memorandum of understanding. That may result in lower tariffs on one particular country’s goods in the near term, but they’ll do little that amounts to a substantial economic win for quite some time.

In return for the United States easing the burden of the steel and aluminum tariffs on the United Kingdom, UK officials have proposed easing digital tax levies on large US tech companies and a concrete negotiating pathway to a more wide-ranging deal, the people said.

The announcement surprised some UK officials, who viewed recent weeks of talks as productive, but not reflective of an imminent agreement.

“This is expected to be a ‘heads of terms’ agreement which sets the broad contours of the arrangement,” JPMorgan analyst Allan Monks wrote in a note to clients Thursday. “The full details are yet to be determined bilaterally and will follow further negotiations”

JPMorgan said the scope of the deal appears limited, because US tariffs on the UK are expected to remain higher than they were before Trump’s “Liberation Day” announcement on April 2. The economic benefit to the United Kingdom will be small, Monks said.

Oh and data shows we have a trade surplus with the UK so if they can’t get tariff relief… well we’re headed for a worldwide recession. At some point the stock market will stop trading on vibes but that’s probably not until stores are empty and mass layoffs start.

Have there been any reports detailing how much money is flowing into the US treasury from tariffs? I’m sure it will be very little compared to the stifled economic output, but would still be interesting to know.

Whatever that number may be it will be dwarfed by the cost of IRS cuts and lack of tax enforcement which will cost at least $500 billion. Plus those dollars come at a cost of lost trade, small businesses closing, and layoffs. So great, some dollars may have come in the door but there won’t be a trucking industry by fall.

When a a voice who REALLY tries to be neutral and just call balls and strikes like Kai is using terms like "they're jerking our chain," that should give you some indication of what an utter shitshow this is.

That’s true but he’s been pretty consistent voicing the stupidity and self harm of the tariff policy. His refrain is “there is a reason tariffs end in -ffs” [for fuck sake]

Imagine going back in time to 2004 and hearing that a future Republican president would impose an import tariff on the United Kingdom.

What were the import tariffs on good from UK before the deal (December 2024) and what are they after the deal? (Hint: they are higher in many cases)

https://www.investors.com/news/economy/us-uk-trade-deal-trump-tariffs-reciprocal-digital-services-sp-500-amzn-googl-meta/

Quote

Here are the other key elements of the deal reported by CNN. The U.S. is set to give some ground on the 25% tariffs imposed on auto and steel imports from the U.K.

In return, along with accepting the 10% reciprocal tariff rate, the U.K. will pare back or eliminate its 2% tax on digital services revenue from search engines, social media and online marketplaces. The digital services tax raises over $1 billion a year from the likes of Amazon, Facebook and Google. Amazon was up 1.5%, Meta 1.75% and Alphabet 2.5% early Thursday.

So we go from 0-10% import tariff across the board (Exceptions available to meme coin holders), 25% import tariff cars and auto parts (EBC Brake pads?) and UK reduces the services tax on digital services companies.  So not manufacturing?  I thought that was the whole purpose to get our manufacturing exports up.

Oh there are some airliners or parts in the deal?

Quote

Lutnick said the U.S. will allow in Rolls Royce jet engines with no tariffs. At the same time, he said that an unnamed U.K. airline will announce a plan to buy $10 billion worth of Boeing (BA) commercial planes later today.

Further, Lutnick said the U.K. is opening up $5 billion in ethanol, beef and machinery trade to U.S. businesses, though details weren't clear.

Un-named airline is buying some Boeing jets.  Doesn't sound like a long term trade deal, sounds like a one time purchase order that is not part of a strategic deal.  Why are we focused so tactically?  Is Trump going to claim credit for every international purchase order?

So we (Consumers) are going to pay more for everything.  This is the model for future deals.  We will pay more.

A hallmark of Trump's first term was that Trump would announce something idiotic, people would fall over themselves explaining why this idiotic idea was actually was not stupid and was part of some grand plan, and then the idiotic idea would be quietly sidelined.

I guess the difference this time is that the stupid plan gets implemented. But stooges continue to try to build this lie that they are not idiotic.

Trump Announces Trade Deal With Britain

The agreement is the first since President Trump imposed stiff tariffs on dozens of America’s trading partners. Trump said the deal would remake the global trading system, even as he added that its details were still being finalized.

Working on getting my new club outfitted and geared up for Junior Olympics this summer.  Looks like the bags my clubs have been using for years won't be an option. Got this email yesterday.

Coach,

Please excuse my late email here, but it was brought to my attention of a hiccup we are having when I was building out the bag to be put on your site.

We use TYR as our vendor for bags, and they are currently out of stock of the color we chose with no signs of replenishment. On top of that, TYR has their bags made in China and unfortunately, it doesn't look like they will be replenishing any inventory due to the tariffs placed on China. They have a small number of black bags on hand, but those will be sold out within the next two days.

Trump begging for a meeting with Xi by preemptively offering an indicative concession of an 83% tariff cut doesn’t seem like he’s controlling the terms of negotiation to you?

This is a really insightful video and it shows the project 2025 playbook to:

  • Devalue the dollar because the financial services industry is like an oversized parasite on our diminishing manufacturing industry and we're at an inflection point.
  • The goal is to bring in investment from Germany, Japan and Taiwan into the US
  • Focus on our remaining strategic advantages like Big Tech (not mentioned were defense, large aircraft, space, etc.)
    • Reshoring will come but not with jobs due to automation.  Example was the MacBook assembly line in Austin being fully automated.
    • We'll see deregulation of industries that will actually negatively impact jobs like self driving cars, drone or autonomous vehicle deliveries
  • Trump's double barrel shotgun has two barrels
    • Tariffs - fired and reshaping the global markets with higher import tariffs here to stay.  The Huge numbers are to have something to negotiate down from (Say 25% down to 10%) but that the tariffs will stay in place on all imports.
    • Tax reduction - Still in the barrel and it will be for the richest, industry based to incentivize factories and prop up real estate values.
    • Trump will sell out the working class in favor of the Real Estate class
  • Average workers will be hurt by this.

Well, for one thing imports seem to be slowing down in a lot of sectors.

Guess what, if there are no imports  . . .  there are no tariffs.
