I know Immamac doesn't want to hear this, but I've noticed when you go back and look at old threads a ton of content is now gone, even more than in the past. I assume this is because of the changes Immamac made with Twitter and other embedded content? If so, it really sucks. If that's not the reason, then what is?  Going back and looking at old content was huge, whether it was for travel tips, a laugh, or something else, it really stinks that this valuable information is gone. And now not being able to copy and share a funny Tweet with friends that was brought to our attention by a posting on the site also sucks.

Yes, all the embedded content is gone.  It doesn’t default to a link, it’s just broken.  Haven’t tried but maybe a right click would let you copy the source, if it was something worth the effort?

Is there a way to turn off avatars like the old site? We did return to office and some of the avatars are just not safe for work.

I don't know, I can think of one particular forum here that, in light of recent trends, could use a little purging of old posts.  Not because there's anything inherently wrong with them, just that it might not matter in the future.

Imma has let politics, and 99% one side, dominate his board. I agree with the vast majority of what the 99% say. But it’s pervasive into most forums outside if CR and it’s never-ending.

I’ll get flak for this post, as I have in the past, but it’ll be from Imma or one of the left wing echo chamber contingent.

People don’t want to be subjected to this shit in every other thread. My activity is down and I strongly suspect a lot of others not in the cabal are too, and it alienates fresh blood.

The 9.95, baseball and basketball boards were all more active this year. Recruiting thread is on track or ahead of last year. Baseball is obviously way more active and basketball was crazy this season because of the firing/hiring/xfer portal.

The draft thread was 93 pages vs 55 last year and that doesn't include the 15+ pages of the sanders thread that was also going nuts.

You may be suffering desensitization from scrolling other apps? Or maybe you browse the website a different way than others?

Fluid mode shows the site pretty busy across the various boards.

Its peak off season. There was no spring game. Sark has locked down any press viewing of practice. What he does show is boring and gives nothing to speculate about. Texas NIL is nearly completely drama free, and the one guy who got arrested had multiple threads light up for over 500 posts in like 2 days.

Recruiting has largely turned into event based follow the leader and understand the dynamics of fit and NIL positioning instead of emotional decisions from idiot 17 year olds. So it's not as crazy of a follow. People who have wild recruitments scare everyone off.

The rest of the board is dominated by what's on the news, which isn't particularly good. People are also a lot more cognizant about what they post on the open internet, and some of the debauchery once prolific posters (including myself) has been hampered by getting older and/or having young families.

I don’t say it all the time. I said it once and maybe twice in the past. I believe you know your trends and metrics and probably know them well. I will never believe what I’ve said isn’t a significant adverse factor.

I actually think you’re pretty fair when it comes to moderation. The issue is you’ve got longtime posters that’ve amassed significant rep that seemingly don’t work.  And they are given carte blanche to run amok.

@immamac: Nobody "choosed" anything! [turns to Hayden ] Did you choose anything?

@hayden_horn: No.

Immamac: [to Pancho] Did you?

@Pancho: My mind is totally blank.

Immamc: I didn't choose anything! [All three slowly turn to confront Bozo]

@Bozo_Casanova: I couldn't help it. It just popped in there.

Immamac: [sternly] What? What just popped in there?

Bozo Casanova: I-- I-I tried to think--

Hayden Horn: [alarmed] LOOK! [They all look over one side of the roof]

Bozo Cassanova: No! It can't be!

Immamac: What is it?

Bozo Cassanova: It can't be!

Immamac: What did you do, Ray?

Pancho: Oh, shit!

Maybe I'm remembering things with rose-colored glasses, but the Football board--I assume the most frequented on every variation of this site--used to be consistently fun and funny. Now it's just a bunch of long-winded dudes who seemingly all hate each other.

It sucks. No, I don’t have the time or interest in building my own site and the lack of Twitter embeds aren’t enough to cause any sane person to go do that, particularly since all of your other contributions are appreciated. I just wish you’d cut the political infusion for every thread worth a damn where Twitter embeds would be helpful.

Everyone not in the CR and interested in the political shit feels this way. Anyone saying otherwise when this comes up has a long CR history that can be seen when clicking on their profile here, including super clever posters on this thread.

if it's that big of a deal I can focus on actually replacing the fully functional embeds with a surly hosted version that has video and can be interacted with to "show more" and have images you can save/copy paste into other apps etc.

I have no idea what the opportunity cost (other projects in your roadmap) is, but many of us would greatly appreciate you doing this. The UX is worse now.

I think load times are drastically improved, but yeah I know it's annoying to have to click through the link and/or see the static image vs being able to interact with the embed.

Ok, I do miss the shaggy days of neg messages where about half a dozen posters followed me around for probably over a year when I first made an account to tell me to "go fuck some sheep, aggy, get off our site" whenever I made a post, however benign. Some good laughs.

So, just to be clear when I'm trying to fix this - your main issue is the user experience and not really anything to do with twitter or surly hosting the actual "embed".

What you want is someone to paste a link from normal recruiting news places (A lot of that is X and not Instagram) and it just shows up as it was posted? If that happened it doesn't really matter what's going on beyond that? Or are you specifically bitching about blocking twitter.

I think it's fair to say that the perfect state is people paste a link, it auto embeds a surly hosted clone of the tweet/embed with full media functionality and it loads super fast and doesn't bog down the page and force it to jump all over the place?

Right now we can enable twitter again and the embeds are horrendously slow and dogshit, but they actually work as embeds OR we have surlyx which loads much faster and doesn't fuck up the page, but doesn't have the rich media.

I will fix this soon, but tell me what I'm fixing before I just start doing random shit. In the meantime I can probably just allow twitter embeds as long as we know and have a plan to get to a state that makes sense.

This letter addresses a number of vital issues that affect the livelihood of every individual in our community. I’ll begin by looking at Aggie08’s testy orations. That will be followed by a survey of some basics and some history. This letter will finally end with some common sense. Going back to the aforementioned testy orations, consider that Aggie08 is the devil incarnate. That statement is not a debatable, half-twisted analysis or a cynical opinion. It is a fact. It is also a fact that Aggie08 is desperate to peddle the snake oil of frightful miserabilism. This makes me wonder if Aggie08 has lost the part of his brain that processes shame. I can’t think of a better explanation, can you? Viewed from all angles, if you’re like most people around here, you’ve already gotten into an argle-bargle at some point with Aggie08 about where the free exchange of ideas ends and outright stupidity begins. In my case, he was claiming that he’s a secular saint whose every pronouncement is a gospel truth that only the sinful or the sinister would question. I, in turn, made the counterargument that he can get away with lies (e.g., that his spinmeisters are the guardians of absolute moral truth) because the average person cannot imagine anyone lying so brazenly. Not one person in a hundred will actually check out the facts for himself and discover that Aggie08 is lying.

At the very least, I am appalled by Aggie08’s serial dishonesty. First, he lied about meddling in everyone else’s affairs. Then, Aggie08 lied about lying about that. There’s a Kikuyu proverb I’d like to recite for Aggie08. The proverb is, “Kari itara gathekaga kari riiko.” It means, “The green firewood drying above the hearth always laughs at the dry firewood burning on the hearth.” Although Aggie08 may be laughing at us now, some day we’ll be the ones establishing a supportive—rather than an intimidating—atmosphere for offering public comment. When that day comes, people far and wide will know that I, speaking as someone who is not a sneaky fence-sitter, regard promoting trust, a questioning attitude, and a receptiveness to raising issues as the basic purpose of my daily life. I am willing not only to consciously work and sacrifice for that goal but also to spread the word that it is amazing to me that Aggie08 would dare to criticize someone or something without carefully reading what was written. Nevertheless, I tip my hat to the bubblingly alchemical creativity of Aggie08’s fans. Who else could have concocted such a cockamamie plan to compromise the free and open nature of public discourse? Even worse, if this plan pans out, it opens the door for Aggie08’s fans to pander to our worst fears. That sort of behavior disgusts me and really brings home the point that Aggie08 and his underbosses have put in place the largest and most effective blacklist in the history of our country. The purpose of this blacklist is to rid various strategic organizations of Aggie08’s denigrators and any other independent-minded people who might interfere with Aggie08’s designs. While such activities are merely the first step towards preventing people from thinking and visualizing beyond an increasingly psychologically caged existence, Aggie08 has long wanted to prevent anyone from stating publicly that we need to settle our disputes with rational discussion—not by moral huffing and puffing. Why do I bring that up? Because by studying his repression of ideas in its extreme, unambiguous form one may more clearly understand why one of Aggie08’s benighted lieutenants recently told the lie of a lifetime. This person said, and I quote, “It’s better to make up things than to discover or deduce them.” Wow. Anyone audacious enough to say something like that has pretty much zero chance of accepting that Aggie08 is interested only in diminishing our will to live. How much more illumination does that fact need before Aggie08 can grasp it? Assuming the answer is “a substantial amount”, let me point out that the primary weapons of Aggie08’s delirious compatriots are lies and deception. This is why, with apologies to Willie Nelson, I offer this warning: Mamas, don’t let your babies grow up to be cranky quodlibetarians.

It’s good that you’re reading this letter. It’s good that you’re listening to what I’m saying. But reading and listening aren’t enough. You must also be willing to have a tough conversation with Aggie08 about colonialism. If we were to have such a conversation I’m pretty sure Aggie08 would cease convincing caustic, presumptuous yokels that there is absolutely nothing they can do to better their lot in life besides joining him. At least I indisputably hope for some sort of outcome like that. Although I prefer appealing to evidence and logic, Aggie08 is driven purely by emotion and anxiety. That’s why it’s hard to convince him that all of his foot soldiers are thieves—idle, envious, and ready to plunder and enslave their weaker neighbors. It’s therefore not surprising that Aggie08 has convinced a generation of people that free speech is wonderful as long as you’re not bashing him and the boisterous, annoying hectors in his camarilla. One must pause in admiration at this triumph of media manipulation.

For one thing, thanks to Aggie08, the epidemic of absenteeism is spreading rapidly. But more importantly, Aggie08 is guilty of selective moral outrage. By that, I mean that he picks and chooses what he’s going to be outraged about, then turns around and does the exact same thing to someone else. If you think that that’s disorderly then consider that Aggie08 says that the world can be happy only when his flock is given full rein. That’s a stupid thing to say. It’s like saying that drug money is being used to pay for the construction of huge underground cities intended to house both humans and space aliens who serve a secret, transnational shadow government. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! [Deep breath.] Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! That’s such a ludicrous concept that I can’t help but respond that Aggie08 must sense his own irremediable inferiority. That’s why he is so desperate to throw us into a “heads I win, tails you lose” situation; it’s the only way for him to distinguish himself from the herd. It would be a lot nicer, however, if Aggie08 also realized that his goal is to replace the morals of traditional Western culture with the depressive emptiness of adversarialism. How bestial is that? How muzzy-headed? How wishy-washy?

Aggie08’s philosophies are perpetuated by an ethos of continuous reform, the demand that one strive permanently and painfully for something that not only does not exist but is alien to the human condition. We should note, of course, that what I’ve written about Aggie08 doesn’t prove anything in itself. It’s only suggestive, but it does make a good point that the first lies that Aggie08 told us were relatively benign. Still, they have been progressing. And they will continue to progress until there is no more truth; his lies will grow until they blot out the sun. Let me recite the following phrases as if I were showing you the rungs of a ladder leading upward towards increased ability to impede the free flow of information: morally questionable, shallow phonies; heartless grobians; Junkerism; Aggie08’s aides-de-camp; Aggie08. My point is that we must be clear and explicit. We must state the obvious: Vilification and guilt by association are not the only two mechanisms that Aggie08 uses to discredit his nemeses. Misrepresentation is another. Consider, for example, how aggressively Aggie08 has been distorting my claim that some malevolent lowlifes are so stingy they believe in vending a lewd mixture of egotism and superstition to a new generation of poxy hoodlums. Aggie08, take a bow here. Finally, any one of the points I made in this letter could be turned into a complete research paper, but the conclusion of each would be the same: Aggie08 cheers acts of wanton slaughter.

I don't give a shit about Twitter - the business. What I care about, and I think others the same, is the ability to click through, or see the whole post, or see old embeds when looking at something from the past, all of that. Just seeing links and no image, or an incomplete image or one that doesn't click through when looking for more, I feel like all of these thing happen now, along with dead image space on old pages.

Yeah, it's fixable.

Twitter is dogshit slow. Surly is not.

Same video, surly hosted vs embed.

Go to this post they are consecutive. My goal is to get native performance with the copy paste link convenience

In the past after a game you'd have to go to the boards or listen to talk radio for game content and to come down from the high. Now social media pushes it to you on your phone from dozens of sources.

It is true I would wait 60-90 seconds on a Ukraine war page to load (DT version), and it would jump all over the place while embeds loaded.
