wait, I didn't know UT went after Jimbo!  I wonder how strongly... what $$/year and how long the contract, etc.  And this would have been before he won his national championship at FSU, or after? I think before. Interesting that he turned you guys down.

Jimbo would have been a fine hire but never got that far. Those dumb fucks at Korn Ferry nixed him due to some bogus character concerns and instead propped up Charlie Strong and Jim Mora JR. Mora declined and the job went to Strong.

Not sure if true, but there was talk that Bill was dead set on hiring the first black HC at Texas.  It was going to be Charlie, Franklin or Shaw

Evidence and depositions are trickling out showing Briles was in fact scape goated.  Going all the way back to the basketball murder scandal that board of regents are dirty mofos.  Clay Travis did some great reporting on what really went on in the BU football scandal.  Hint it was a university problem.

At this point Im sick of mediocrity, sick of Aggies being in the top 5 and sick of hearing buzz words like rape enabler.  Everyone had such a hard on for Meyer and he has coached rapists, a murder, and countless felons.  Hell Ed Ogeron had 5 players convicted of rape.  Briles deserves to come back and if we were smart we’d hire him weather the dumb ass pr storm and just start winning.  Winning would shut uo alll these whiny ass virtue signalers.  Otherwise Texas is one more mediocre hire from becoming irrelevant like Michigan.

Donors would have ponied up the massive buyout for Tom and the cost of Urban, but it’s going to be much more difficult to convince the donors to foot the bill for a new coach not on Urban’s calibur. The buyout gets lower every year so unfortunately the chances of Herman coming back for 1 more year are pretty high right now.

This is why we need to think outside the box and completely change how contracts are written in college football! We need a sellable plan to the BMDs that we can buyoff Herman and his assistants, yet not cost much more than if we kept Herman. Herman has $18.75mn left for the final 3 years of his deal and a $15mn buyout.

Why do we have to keep giving these G5 coaches a 5 year $5mn per year guaranteed contract coming off $1-$2mn contracts at their small schools?  This just leads to our constant cycle of locking into the wrong guy and having to beg big donors to buyout bad contracts.

We should reset how contracts in football are made by finding coaches who are hungry to win at UT. Offer a short-term incentive-laden contract, which is say 3 years and a $1.5mn per season. But, you get a $2mn bonus for a 10 win season, an added $1.5mn bonus if you beat OU, an added $2mn bonus if you win a conference championship, an added $2 million bonus if you make the playoffs, an added $2mn bonus if you make the championship game and another $2 mn bonus if you win the National Championship. So, we are only guaranteeing $4.5mn over 3 years, but a coach can make up to $13mn and should make at least $5mn (win 10 games and beat OU or win conference).  We can always extend 2 years if he is a badass for recruiting purposes. We can also offer EVERYTHING we offered Meyer like $3mn for assistants, complete control and his own assistant AD for recruiting who can coordinate player “imaging rights” with big donors going forward, etc. That way we have some institutional deniability and reason to fire without cause yet provide CDC and Hartzell some cover should the new assistant AD/new coach get caught stretching the limits by a completely neutered NCAA (i.e. we won't be punished by the NCAA bc we will be doing what every $EC school does)

Coaches like Jamey Chadwell (who has worked miracles at Coastal Carolina, which did not even have football 4 years ago, and who makes just $375,000), Jeff Traylor (who makes a base of $800k at UTSA), or Bill Napier (who only makes $880k and up to just $950k at Louisiana Lafayette) would totally jump at this contract offer! They would just want the chance to be the UT coach, much less double or more their base salary and have a potential to make $5mn+ just for meeting expectations and up to $13mn in a year.

Not surprising that Herman is nonplussed about the fans being fed up with his jackass. The expectation is to win the Big 12. Not have barely an outside chance OR just “be in the conversation.”

That conversation: meaning pundits on every radio and tv show keep asking “What’s wrong with Texas? Why can’t Texas dominate their conference?”

The Program may HAVE BEEN in better shape from Strong but now it is certainly entering a dark time especially if we hold onto Tom and don’t go through an adequate HC search. Interview all the candidates. Damnit. It’s not that difficult.

Tom should know what the goals are. The goal posts haven’t moved. Every year is not year one. Year over year improvement is expected dumbass.

Fuck you and the Clay Travis cock you rode in on.

Why what in his reporting doesn’t make sense?   What in Ron Murff’s deposition doesn’t make you question the narrative the WSJ sold everyone?  Why was the pepper hamilton report given orally to the board so there would be no physical evidence of what was said?  Why pay Briles full buyout if they could have lawfully terminated his contract?  Why write a letter of exoneration for him?  With the information coming out now in the latest suit I don’t think Briles is the villain you all wish him to be.  He’d win a NC at Texas.  So if you were good with Urban Meyer and his PROVEN track record what makes you so angry about Briles when it looks like he wasn’t the villain you so desperately want h to be.  He is the best coach available after Meyer said no.  Dabo aint fucking leaving that’s a pie in the sky fairytale belief.

If we have to get pulses racing in order to hire and fire period, because we cannot afford to hire and fire otherwise, then that is a serious problem that needs to be fixed.

fair enough.  It’d be a good hire to get us back to the top but get it’s terrible optics.  After Strong and Herman I just don’t care about the initial shit storm from the holier than thous who really have not read into what happened in Waco.  I’m at the point to where enough evidence exists to warrant a 2nd chance and I want to win.  Afraid we are one more bad hire away from being completely irrelevant.  Worst fear is Tech will say fuck it hire him and then they’ll embarrass each year like Baylor did

Fuck Art Briles and his rape factory. As has been discussed many times on this board, there is no comparison between Meyer and Briles in terms of their transgressions. UT should shut down the football program before hiring Briles.

This type of contract setup will indeed only attract small time college coaches who will indeed salivate at trying to make it big time on the back of UT's program and name. Is that really what you want? For UT's football program to become the nursery for the up and coming, hot, sexy, young football dudes to test out their coaching and program management skills?  So UT football becomes a proving ground for football corches?  Right now, at least going by all the rhetoric on the football boards, UT fancies itself a blue chip program that only looks at "proven" coaches and guys like Jamey Chadwell are beneath you.

On paper, your setup sounds good. But the type of "proven" coaches UT (and, tbh, A&M's) fan base wants will not return your AD's phone calls, forget about Korn/Ferry International or some other executive search firm.  Tack on all the program management requirement aside from being a gameday X's and O's master... glad-handing BMDs, keeping media circus happy including by spending time on LHN, etc etc.  Which "sitting" (to smirkingly channel one of the Aggie board writers) or "standing" championship corch is going to drop their program or golf-retirement life and come take the helm at UT for that sort of structured contract that puts on the onus on the corch and his team to prove themselves once again?

UT's program sure seems to have come at a fork in the road; it'll be interesting which way the program turns. Or, channeling Yogi Berra-- let's see if UT takes the fork now that it has come upon it.

Well so far we have hired a few G5 guys who were the flavor of the month. I don't think that reflects we are some kind of job that all the top people are lining up to get. So I would hope that UT itself doesn't have this kind of delusion. I am not sure what they are basing that on anyway, most of our top targets have been saying no to us for a long time.

And even on this board we have a lot of posters wanting UTSA coach Jeff Traylor, he is hardly some proven superstar.

Oh yes. I am reminded of the David McWilliams and John Mackovic eras and the ESPN commentators.

"Texas is an underachieving joke. Let's laugh at their pathetic efforts while they get run over by Colorado and A&M"

"Wait, Texas wants to fire it's coach? What is wrong with those delusional people? John Mackovic/David McWilliams won the SWC!!111"

And so it always goes.

yep.

that's the problem with most of the modern journalism; it is based on selling a narrative. the narrative is already set in their heads, they file articles and make online and on-air comments that fit the narrative in order to push that narrative. it sucks because it is formulaic, but it makes their life easier and it sells. so they keep selling it.  truth, trust be damned.

Both are bad situations that can not be condoned by anyone but they have no moral equivalence.

I think you are missing my point entirely! I don't want to keep making the same mistakes over and over again! I want the big fish! But all of the candidates right now suck! I think any “bigger name” direction we go (i.e. Franklin, Campbell, Fickle, Kubiak, Sark, Fleck, etc), we will end up trying to fire this head coach in 3-4 years and begging the BMDs for another $25mn to buy him out! Rinse and repeat!

Our real problem right now is that we might actually keep Herman because the BMDs can’t find a consensus head coach that makes it worth $25mn to buy out Herman and staff. This lame duck do nothing approach is the nuclear option as it will destroy the 2022 recruiting class. I am proposing a solution where we only spend $750k more than if we kept Herman through his 3 years left on his contract. But this option would save the 2022 recruiting class and bring fresh energy and hope into the program with a hungry coach who is incentivized to play $EC ball utilizing the new player image rights rules and our huge money alumni network as a way to prove himself! If he gives us Herman-like results just like I think any other of the “bigger names” we are looking at will provide, then it costs us nothing above what we are scheduled to pay Herman over the next 3 years.

The last thing I would want to do is go down the route of being a small program. But, I don't trust CDC to make the a hire that will turn the program around with the choices we have currently. I essentially want to buy time to eventually get a big fish yet convince BMDs to spend the $25mn to fire Herman now.

I was pissed that Mack Brown and Joe Jamail screwed our chances to get Saban. We would have paid Saban $50-$60mn over 5 years and now we have spent that much on buyouts alone over this period. The next time we go after a Saban, Meyer, Dabo type we will need to spend $100mn+. I am afraid if we don't learn from our past mistakes, the money will not be there to do it.  There has to be a limit to how many times we can go to the well to buy out coaches.

If Tom’s wife knew about the domestic violence situation, Tom had an obligation to report it to the IX Coordinator at OSU. There is no hierarchy where he needs to run it by the HC.

In all likelihood, Tech will say "fuck it" and hire Briles. As you alluded to, they're not nearly as worried about optics. Lubbock is a good place to keep a low profile, unless one of ESPN's talking heads has a kid on your team.

They would bus women in for Briles' players to rape if he goes to Tech. They would make Baylor's coverup look like amateur hour. They got a taste of success in hoops with the final four and are ready to completely go to the dark side in order to do the same in football.
